I am a huge supporter of our military, especially the Air Force. But I dont really see the need for the F-35 since we just introduced the an F-22. It lacks a lot of capabilities that the F-22 has. Which means its no different than our modern fighters we are using such as the F-18 or F-16 and F-15 strike eagle.
The f-35 uses a system known as STOVL which allows the aircraft to land like a helicopter. In fact, the Lockheed Martin X-35 was chosen over the competing Boeing X-32 primarily because of Lockheed's lift-fan STOVL design, which proved superior to the Boeing vectored-thrust approach that was used on the f-22 Raptor. Since it vastly out performs the F-18, F-16, and the F-15 in air to ground roles, it's going to be the replacement for them.
The STOVL version though is only being used by the Marines. The STOVL version is the only one that I would even consider supporting because of its capabilites.
It basically performs the same as most of our current fighters that aren't as exceptional as the 22, and it's around the same price range compared to the $832 million Raptor. It's mainly meant to replace these old 16's, 15's, 18's etc. that are starting to malfunction and aren't going to hold up to see much action with the 4th generation fighters that are popping up now.
The F-22 costs around 178 to 200 million each. It's difficult to find accurate info on the exact price. The F-15, 16, and 18 are 4th generation fighters! The newer fighter like the Eurofighter, Rafale, and the highly modified SU-35 and 37's are generation 4.5! Th F-35 and F-22 are 5th generation fighters from the start. They are designed to make all other 5th gen fighters obsolete!!!
