  • Richard is amazing

  • sooo good! i love it! This song has that true American sound, but kind of mixed with this beautiful Canadian soulfoulness at the same time. hah, its beautiful...

  • I love you Richard

  • No words for this. Richard is the best.

  • Fuck Winter Park bro, I know how you feel Richard.

  • Richard Manuel had one of the greatest voices ever.

  • hey ape just listen music

  • 3 people are tone deaf

  • I was living in Orlando, Florida when Richard died, only a mile or two from where it occurred. I remember it as if it were yesterday reading the awful news, stunned and crushed. Unfortunately, I couldn't afford to go to the show the night before. I miss Richard and Rick so much. What loving wonderful souls. Life can be hard to bear for such sensitive people. I hope they are in a safe, more loving place now.

  • Priceless, thanks for posting this!

  • the band is without doubt the most under rated rock group. and that's science ;-)

  • Hi there, i agree the beatles were great. For me George Harrison's songs were the best but that's neither here nor there....the band were simply the best. Manuels vocals were unreal, he makes me sad even if i have nothing to be sad about.

  • what remains to say..... Richard Manuel was such ....... in the Band.... the world's best band.

  • dear daughter.......it was all so very painless when you ran out to recieve all that false instruction...songwriting has gone downhill. This is spiritual, loving, religious all at once.

  • his voice makes literally makes time stand still...

  • the world would be a bit more special if beak was with us

  • i heard The BAND in 1969 for the firsttime and that changed my life

since then there was no week without this great music and Richard was the

    greatest R.I.P.

  • Over the years rolling stone has made it abundently clear they know 2 things about music, jack and shit.

  • we need a Richard today

  • @bigcountrypicker Ray Lamontagne???

  • @gregperry84 maybe - what about someone like Anthony from Anthony & the Johnsons? Very different sound (& look) from Manuel but both can break your heart with a note.

  • @gregperry84 not quite, but close! Richard is one of a kind...

  • Manuel was an absolute genius. 3 people are retarded..

  • thanks v much for posting

one of my all time favorite tunes from a v soulful singer

    beautiful stuff

  • I was just watching a BBC live show with David Gray, KT Tunstall and Ray LaMontagne on stage together doing songs in rotation and Ray mentioned this guy as being a massive influence. So I came to see what he was talking about...now I know.

  • Actually, Rolling Stone magazine gave The Band a ton of attention and praise in the late sixties and early seventies.

  • bless myself

  • musically, my favorite moment in history.

  • Wow, I've never seen anyone shave between verses. Talk about rage! No dis to Richard but how can you treat me this way.

  • for those of you who love richard and The Band look up "Working in the Canastas" here on youtube. Its an outtake for a song that was never released.

  • Not to many people can capture emotion in a song like Richard Manuel... Dam, what a great singer/musician.

  • @seanrigs True. And what about that Staple Singers song on The Last Waltz, "Take the Load Off", also great, moving and strong. I think Roberta Flack can also capture emotion in a song, like her "The First Time" or notably "Jesse (I'm lonely - come home)". Janis Ian's "At Seventeen" is so emotional and sad and true, it's almost painful. Richard Manuel's 2nd chorus of "We Shall be Released" in the The Last Waltz' finale is another fine example of his emotional singing style, what tearful depth..

  • Credit where it is due, beautiful stuff here from the big man! May he forever rest in peace!

  • His voice in this song gives me goosebumps. It's amazing.

  • Today is the 24th anniversary of Richard's death. I hope you rest well man. You are dearly missed.

  • @AyshLoundou

    guess soon to be 25

and 1 of my little darlin tears of grief

  • JR just jammin in the background... Levon keepin it down. Man, they were the best!

  • Don't forget Rick's unique bass playing, and all the magical stuff that Garth is doing in the background! (Unfortunately, that's barely audible in this recording.)

  • Richard Manual, and his tortured genius at its best on this track. my favorite by The Band.

  • the best performance by anyone. hands down.

  • Richard Manuel was just absolutely amazing, each and every member contributed so much to the music - but to me Richard was the absolute soul of the band. The more the band twisted the more he spiraled until he could take it no longer.

I think that getting back on the road after getting clean showed him that he could never get back to that pinnacle as an act again, and everyone knows the rest.

  • What's scary about this is the fact that the Band thought their Woodstock set was below their usual standards.

  • I remember walking my dog listening to the radio on my sony walkman when the DJ announced that Richard Manuel hung himself. For me it was one of those I know exactly where I was moments. A year and half later my brother, named Rich, also committed suicide. I can't hear Manuel's voice without thinking of my brother, but I still love to hear it.

  • Thank you for sharing. My condolences.

  • @lpetix - I was living in Orlando/Winter Park. And our local PBS was showing "The Last Waltz", when I learned this. I called and made a pledge, with the info.

  • tnelson11 - I'm so sorry to hear this. Please accept my sympathies. Please know they finally found the peace they so deserved & far from pain. Feb. 6 2010 6:05 am California

  • @tnelson11 ....your story is profoundly moving to me, and I am haunted by his singing also. I am trying to understand the links between musicianship, sensitivity, and suicide or untimely death through analyzing the astro birth charts of musicians. (I myself had to retire from being a musician due to nervous exhaustion) To this end I have been searching for an accurate time of birth for Richard Manuel, but no luck yet.

  • @Bumptiously

Well Richard was born on April 3, 1943 and died on March 4, 1986. This information is easily available...

  • @ABet3 thanks for trying to help. However, I need his *TIME* of birth to do an accurate analysis.

  • @tnelson11 That's incredibly sad. I have no such connections and Richard Manuel's voice still makes me tear up sometimes -- I can't even imagine the effect it must have on you. Condolences.

  • @tnelson11

    That's music huh.

  • @tnelson11 thank you for sharing, second only to whispering pines

  • @tnelson11 i understand...i, too, have so many connections between music and people i've lot...sorry for yours...

  • @tnelson11 Richard's regular singing voice or his falsetto singing voice?

  • Wow! Feel some of that pain. Some people are great singers but have nothing to say. This man is not one of them. Absolutely fantastic performance.

  • To think that the joke of magazine Rolling Stone did not have Richard Manuel in the top 100 singers of all time! Pathetic....

  • rolling stone is a joke. They print stories on rap and hip-hop. They have no credibility. Their opinions and rankings of bands means nothing.

  • They sure are a joke, I flipped through a store today and saw one of there magazines with the Jonas Nrothers faces imprinted on the cover, as usual.

  • I am a die hard classic rock fan, always have been and always will. But to claim that Rolling Stone is a joke is a bit of a stretch. That magazine has brought to light many bands and acts that would have gone unnoticed otherwise. And I may not be a huge hip-hop fan, but I feel that limiting yourself to one genre of music is incredibly stupid and pretentious. Theres no excuse for not getting out there and listening to other kinds of music, be it in another country or around the corner.

  • @PageandPlant4Life

They rank the Beatles in the top 10 of everything. The Beatles arnt even that good! They would rank Justin Bieber #1 if he reffered to himself as a rock musician.

  • @HalfBornUnicornFetus agree with you on half of that statement. To shit with Bieber, yes, but while I think the Beatles were overrated in many ways, I think they're actually underrated in that they have so many detractors that the genius of their simplicity (as well as their influence and impact) gets overlooked. Lennon and McCartney wrote some fantastic songs, and George Harrison was a great pure songwriter and a really great guitarist. And Ringo was there, too.

  • I immediately also looked for his name. Pathetic!

  • @xpat73...Wow! didnt realize that! seriously that is a joke!! wtf

  • @xpat73 Rolling Stone isn't what it was. Its another part of the mass media that they hypocritically complain about. That's whats pathetic

  • @xpat73 RS is a pretty good magazine. They have great articles.

  • @xpat73

that list is a United States piece of crap

it dosent mean anything to people with diverse music apreaciations

  • @xpat73 rolling stone magazine is fucked

  • fuckin ball yearning!!!!!!!

"I was madly in love with Richard... At the time, [1975] we had the same troubles. I felt insecure and he was clearly insecure, and yet he was so incredibly gifted....For me he [Richard] was the true light of the Band. The other guys were fantastic talents, of course, but there was something of the holy madman about Richard. He was raw. When he sang in that high falsetto the hair on my neck would stand on end. Not many people can do that."

    --Eric Clapton

  • Yes, this is undoubtedly the best version. However, Ian & Sylvia, believe it or not, did a great version, which I think is second only to The Band's.

  • This is Manuel at the very top of his game and its almost unbelievable

  • aint it the truth.

  • TIMELESS LYRICS. i CAN'T IMAGINE ANYONE ELSE SINGING THIS SONG.tHIS SONG AND WHISPERING PINES ARE ABOUT AS GOOD AS IT GETS IN MY OPINION.

  • holy shit this is the definitive version

  • This is so amazing. I did not know this video existed. My favourite song of all time. RIP Richard.

  • Richard was amazing

  • he has to be the best ever

  • The hurt in Richard's voice on this song is just heart-breaking. What a talent! Such a shame his life ended in such a tragic way with so much potential wasted.

  • He makes it sound so easy, but what a voice! gosh

  • Too good to loose words about this performance.unbelievable.

  • Jerry Garcia Band burns on a version of this from 1990 (the double live cd release) and they do I shall be Released, as well, and Dylan's Senor...

  • Why wasn't this in the movie?

  • This is an incredible performance R.I.P. Richard Manuel. :(

  • No living Band could play this song today and make it sound this good.

  • Not true at all erikjromano-- there are two kids out of Denton, TX killing this song right now at the JJs Pizza (on youtube) Check out: =PoD_Rr19cCg

And I chewed them out for using a fake title to get traffic.

  • thesquonkstear: no.

  • great performance

  • he'll ALWAYS make me cry.........

  • nobody could do this better...

  • Beautiful

  • What a great performance.

  • Even though Dylan may have helped Manuel write the lyrics, which are brilliant, the real genuis of this song is in the music and particularly in the incredible organ work of Garth Hudson, although the talent is spread pretty damn evenly throughout this band. The most appropraite pick for the their name: The Band

  • this is propably the best comment I've ever read on youtube.

  • dylan had written lyrics, but had no music for it. richard had two on the back burner. this is one of them.

  • ...why don't we get together, what else can we do? Can any line ever top that!

  • Bless his heart. Such an amazing musician and sweet soul.

  • all that false instruction...

  • hurrah for stratford ontario.

  • Please remember that Bob Dylan himself mentioned that he HELPED Richard write this song. It was Richard's brainchild.

There will never be someone else like Manuel. The man is such a legend.

  • I think Richard was considered the "Ray Charles" of Canada. such a soulful voice!

  • what an amazing performance...the Band at its best!! it's a pity that there isn't a full bootleg of their performance at woodstock...rip richard!

  • ...and R.I.P. Rick Danko...

  • I got it..ten songs in all. Tears of Rage is still my favorite, it's unfortunate it wasn't included with the 3 on the official Woodstock compilation (The Weight, Long Black Vail, Loving You is Sweeter Than Ever) RIP Richard

  • This was before drugs and alcohol ravaged his voice, what a talent he was! As Levon Helm once said, Richard truely was the vocal talent in the Band.

  • In The Band he really could make his voice transform all the power of their collective musical vision... in this clip I don't feel it.... but I still feel, that without him there's no band... and thgat he reall is up there with the greatest singers...

  • fantastic!

  • This man can make me feel the pain in his voice. He takes me places in my soul that only he can do. A FANTASTIC LYRICAL POET!

  • The poet is Bob Dylan...it's his song. And yes, we will miss Richard Manuel, a great voice and a friend to Mr. Dylan.

  • Awesome! The loss of such a lyrical poet, is tragic for those left behind.

  • the incredible intensity of this song-one of the greatest compositions ever-wow

  • 1. richard manuel

    2. paul williams (temptations)- also shot self

    3. van morrison

    4. otis redding

  • ...makes me feel a bit better during a sad and cold morning! Thanks Richard, I wonder if he realized how much he helped people with his music and how much he was loved and is missed?

  • I hope he did. His music is one of the things that makes me forget about the world for a little while.

I regret that I never had a chance to meet him or see him live. RIP Richard, you are missed.

  • If you get the chance, you should read Levon's (semi)-autobiography. He mentions some pretty moving things about Richards death that I think answer your question. Pick up the book, it's a great read.

  • what else can be said about this man? Clearly sent down to us by the angels....taken back way too soon. This song and Richards vocal still "does it" for me even after all these years...so beautiful.

  • Incredible...beautiful and yet so tragic...

  • Do a little research and find some of the things Richard's peers have had to say about him. Eric Clapton, Levon Helm, Bob Dylan, etc. Brilliant guy. IMO, this is absolutely the best performance at Woodstock. Also, if you like this be sure to check out Levon Helm's website.

  • come to me now, you know we're so alone...

  • and life is brief

  • While Bob Dylan co-wrote this song, Richard Manuel turned it into the most heart-wrenching, emotional song ever performed, with his vocals. God bless you tortured soul. May you rest easily. Peace

  • Wow. Thanks for posting this.

  • This is easily one of the best performances from Woodstock (if not THE best), and yet almost nobody knows about it! Beautiful...

  • Beautiful! Awesome stuff.

  • him rick danko are my favourite musicans rip rick and richard

  • At one of the toughest live venues ever, Richard and The Band skate perfect figure 8's, on one of the toughest numbers possible..! This is required listening for any band-in-the-making.

  • Back to when Music was Music.

  • Richard was amazing, no doubt but Music is always Music and it's out there now if you search for it; you can be sure there was a fair share of manufactured crap back then, too-The Archies, anyone?

  • May this god of rock rest in peace...we miss ya Richard!

  • RIP Richard, we really miss you. May you rise above the wretched.....

  • lpetix, you should put more of The Band's set on this site. It would be so sweet

  • Richard Manuel sings a tricky song here with authority. Not only was he born with not only a great voice, but a voice that resonated on some other level. Like Tim Buckley that way - and his son Jeff.

  • Richard wrote this with Bob Dylan - amazing talent, so sad he's gone...

  • I love his rendition of "Georgia On My Mind".. I never even knew about him 'til I came upon him at youtube! And I'm a consummate 60's, 70's music lover! I was THERE! Growing UP through it ALL! SILLY ME! LOL Thank you MUCH!

  • This version is full of energy, and Richard's singing is top notch. Beautiful.

  • Thanks for this! Richard Manuel has a great voice.

  • JRR isnt a bad guy. He is a genius. But I love Richard so much. He was a beautiful person, if only he hadn't touched the drugs and booze.

  • ... he wouldn't have had the same life experience.

Cherish your disastrous beauties friends. They have fallen for the greater good. Please don't wish them a life of banality.

  • It's nice to see him back before he grew a beard and started killing his talent with booze.

  • Richard Manuel 4-ever

  • Anybody have any footage of Manuel playing/singing You Don't Know Me?

  • Gigantic treat - thanks for posting it. Just look at this talent. There's a place in hell waiting for JRR.

  • whats JRR

  • He means Robbie. (Jaime Robbie Robertson) Not that I agree.

  • thnx so much for the video :) they are one of my favourite bands

  • It's good to see people appreciating Richard Manuel for the amazing musician that he was. The Band's best stuff is what he wrote and or sang.

  • DEFINATELY!

  • Wow, some things just shouldn't be lost in musical history and this is one of them, thanks so much for the post!

  • Thanks alot man, it's so hard to find footage of Richard, even in the Last Waltz you hardly see him and he only gets the one song in the final cut. Definitely one of the overlooked geniuses of rock and blues. No one but Ray Charles could sing "Georgia" better then him

  • It's definetely at woodstock..if anyone's got any rare Band from 1969 or 1970, I would greatly appreciate it

  • Yes, it's at Woodstock.

  • Richard Manuel. Wow!

  • Wow..thanks for finding this..where is he performing?

  • Richard has the greatest voice in rock n roll, IMO..and I think this was his best song vocally (also the first song on their first album) No one sang with as much emotion as "The Beak", the pain in his voice is scary.

  • Best Male Vocalist (along with George Jones) Richard Manuel aka The Beak. The Gobbler. What a voice. This is another example.

  • Really appreciate you sharing this amazing clip. His singing is as riveting to me as the the first time I heard him way way back when.

  • Stunning performance!

  • Wow! The talent transcends the poor video quality. Thanks so much for posting this!

  • the best there ever was and will be. Love you Richard!

  • Isn't this wonderful. Richard was one of a kind. Music that really says something. Music that matters.

  • Thanks for this, especially today. Feeling down about Richard today...
