sooo good! i love it! This song has that true American sound, but kind of mixed with this beautiful Canadian soulfoulness at the same time. hah, its beautiful...
I was living in Orlando, Florida when Richard died, only a mile or two from where it occurred. I remember it as if it were yesterday reading the awful news, stunned and crushed. Unfortunately, I couldn't afford to go to the show the night before. I miss Richard and Rick so much. What loving wonderful souls. Life can be hard to bear for such sensitive people. I hope they are in a safe, more loving place now.
Hi there, i agree the beatles were great. For me George Harrison's songs were the best but that's neither here nor there....the band were simply the best. Manuels vocals were unreal, he makes me sad even if i have nothing to be sad about.
dear daughter.......it was all so very painless when you ran out to recieve all that false instruction...songwriting has gone downhill. This is spiritual, loving, religious all at once.
@gregperry84 maybe - what about someone like Anthony from Anthony & the Johnsons? Very different sound (& look) from Manuel but both can break your heart with a note.
I was just watching a BBC live show with David Gray, KT Tunstall and Ray LaMontagne on stage together doing songs in rotation and Ray mentioned this guy as being a massive influence. So I came to see what he was talking about...now I know.
@seanrigs True. And what about that Staple Singers song on The Last Waltz, "Take the Load Off", also great, moving and strong. I think Roberta Flack can also capture emotion in a song, like her "The First Time" or notably "Jesse (I'm lonely - come home)". Janis Ian's "At Seventeen" is so emotional and sad and true, it's almost painful. Richard Manuel's 2nd chorus of "We Shall be Released" in the The Last Waltz' finale is another fine example of his emotional singing style, what tearful depth..
Don't forget Rick's unique bass playing, and all the magical stuff that Garth is doing in the background! (Unfortunately, that's barely audible in this recording.)
Richard Manuel was just absolutely amazing, each and every member contributed so much to the music - but to me Richard was the absolute soul of the band. The more the band twisted the more he spiraled until he could take it no longer.
I think that getting back on the road after getting clean showed him that he could never get back to that pinnacle as an act again, and everyone knows the rest.
I remember walking my dog listening to the radio on my sony walkman when the DJ announced that Richard Manuel hung himself. For me it was one of those I know exactly where I was moments. A year and half later my brother, named Rich, also committed suicide. I can't hear Manuel's voice without thinking of my brother, but I still love to hear it.
@lpetix - I was living in Orlando/Winter Park. And our local PBS was showing "The Last Waltz", when I learned this. I called and made a pledge, with the info.
tnelson11 - I'm so sorry to hear this. Please accept my sympathies. Please know they finally found the peace they so deserved & far from pain. Feb. 6 2010 6:05 am California
@tnelson11 ....your story is profoundly moving to me, and I am haunted by his singing also. I am trying to understand the links between musicianship, sensitivity, and suicide or untimely death through analyzing the astro birth charts of musicians. (I myself had to retire from being a musician due to nervous exhaustion) To this end I have been searching for an accurate time of birth for Richard Manuel, but no luck yet.
@tnelson11 That's incredibly sad. I have no such connections and Richard Manuel's voice still makes me tear up sometimes -- I can't even imagine the effect it must have on you. Condolences.
I am a die hard classic rock fan, always have been and always will. But to claim that Rolling Stone is a joke is a bit of a stretch. That magazine has brought to light many bands and acts that would have gone unnoticed otherwise. And I may not be a huge hip-hop fan, but I feel that limiting yourself to one genre of music is incredibly stupid and pretentious. Theres no excuse for not getting out there and listening to other kinds of music, be it in another country or around the corner.
They rank the Beatles in the top 10 of everything. The Beatles arnt even that good! They would rank Justin Bieber #1 if he reffered to himself as a rock musician.
@HalfBornUnicornFetus agree with you on half of that statement. To shit with Bieber, yes, but while I think the Beatles were overrated in many ways, I think they're actually underrated in that they have so many detractors that the genius of their simplicity (as well as their influence and impact) gets overlooked. Lennon and McCartney wrote some fantastic songs, and George Harrison was a great pure songwriter and a really great guitarist. And Ringo was there, too.
"I was madly in love with Richard... At the time, [1975] we had the same troubles. I felt insecure and he was clearly insecure, and yet he was so incredibly gifted....For me he [Richard] was the true light of the Band. The other guys were fantastic talents, of course, but there was something of the holy madman about Richard. He was raw. When he sang in that high falsetto the hair on my neck would stand on end. Not many people can do that."
The hurt in Richard's voice on this song is just heart-breaking. What a talent! Such a shame his life ended in such a tragic way with so much potential wasted.
Even though Dylan may have helped Manuel write the lyrics, which are brilliant, the real genuis of this song is in the music and particularly in the incredible organ work of Garth Hudson, although the talent is spread pretty damn evenly throughout this band. The most appropraite pick for the their name: The Band
I got it..ten songs in all. Tears of Rage is still my favorite, it's unfortunate it wasn't included with the 3 on the official Woodstock compilation (The Weight, Long Black Vail, Loving You is Sweeter Than Ever) RIP Richard
In The Band he really could make his voice transform all the power of their collective musical vision... in this clip I don't feel it.... but I still feel, that without him there's no band... and thgat he reall is up there with the greatest singers...
...makes me feel a bit better during a sad and cold morning! Thanks Richard, I wonder if he realized how much he helped people with his music and how much he was loved and is missed?
If you get the chance, you should read Levon's (semi)-autobiography. He mentions some pretty moving things about Richards death that I think answer your question. Pick up the book, it's a great read.
what else can be said about this man? Clearly sent down to us by the angels....taken back way too soon. This song and Richards vocal still "does it" for me even after all these years...so beautiful.
Do a little research and find some of the things Richard's peers have had to say about him. Eric Clapton, Levon Helm, Bob Dylan, etc. Brilliant guy. IMO, this is absolutely the best performance at Woodstock. Also, if you like this be sure to check out Levon Helm's website.

Best Male Vocalist (along with George Jones) Richard Manuel aka The Beak. The Gobbler. What a voice. This is another example.

Really appreciate you sharing this amazing clip. His singing is as riveting to me as the the first time I heard him way way back when.

Isn't this wonderful. Richard was one of a kind. Music that really says something. Music that matters.
