instead of trying to remove the studs for the metal cover and snapping it, use a pry bar and place in between lip of oil pan and subframe. Now u can use your knee to lift the engine up an inch to remove the cover. Been working for lexus for 9 years. I always watch rookies trying to take those studs off when its not needed.
hi my car is making noise ..u can check my youtube channel..the timing, a/c and p/c belts were changed recently..so myabe that sound is due to that? thanks
my lexus dealer did timing belt maintenance but said theres no need to change water pump and tensioner ...so is that normal? i have heard one should do those too..but he said he has never heard of it..
When you are turning the engine by hand with a breaker bar, it has to be turned CLOCKWISE and double check the timing marks on the Left CAM, Right CAM and the Crank. You might have to turn the engine a few times. I turned my engine 5 times, each time checking the alignment marks to make sure everything lined up before putting the engine back together.
One last comment for those "shade-tree" mechanics. On a V6 or V8 make sure the slack from the timing belt is on the TENSIONER SIDE. Once the pin is released on the tensioner it will take up the slack. After releasing the PIN on the tensioner make sure ALL the teeth are in their grooves. Double check if needed. As I said below, TURN THE ENGINER by HAND using a breaker bar. It should turn with no binding. If all is good, put the engine back together and start it up !!
Also, there are 2 ways to remove the crank bolt. The first is with an air impact wrench (500+lbs). Buy one from Harbor Freight Tools, $90. The second is to buy a "holder tool" from Amazon or Ebay that holds the crank with a Breaker Bar as you turn the crank with another Torque Wrench. This Tool is about $50.00.
Excellent Video. Thank you !!! Have a 1999 Lexus GS400 (V8), 118K. Watched this video and reading the service manual several times I changed the timing belt, tensioner, water pump, etc.. A few recommendations: Have a 500+ lbs impact wrench to remove the crank bolt. Also, once the belt is on TURN THE ENGINE BY HAND using a Breaker BAR several times. If there is any binding, take off the belt, re-line the cams and crank, reinstall the belt and turn again. There should be no binding. Thanks.
I've changed the timing belt on a similar 3.0 engine in a Toyota Sienna van and I will be soon doing the same to a Toyota Highlander. As I recall, I removed those studs with the torx ends by double nutting them. If you combine the torque from the torx socket with a wrench on a double jammed nut, the stud should come out unscathed. Even though I'm just a shadetree mechanic I have the special pulley holding tools from Toyota so I can both remove AND install the crank bolt to the proper torque.
REGARDS THE TENSIONER PULLYS @ 200.000 KMS, U CAN SAVE A FEW BUCKS BY USING A SEAL REMOVER HOOK TO PRY OUT SEALS (TRY NOT TO DAMAGE SEAL EDGES) THEN WASH IN WHITE SPIRITS TO CLEAN OUT OUT LUBE.
ONCE CLEAN, HOLD INNER AND OUTER RACE FIRM AND BLOW DRY WITH AIR GUN ALSO CLEAN SEALS.
FILL GREASE TO 40 PERCENT OF BEARING INNER AREA (DO NOT OVERFILL AS IT WILL BLOW OUT SEALS OR OVERHEAT). USE GREASE SOURCED FROM "SKF BEARINGS" SUITABLE FOR ELECTRICAL MOTOR BEARINGS OR A GOOD SYNTHETIC GREASE.
It is a very good detail vedio, I have seem it at least 7 times, due to the fact that i have to replace 02 lexus es300 timing belt very soon. I have three questions! 1.How to retight the crankshift? since it will moves, do you need a special tool to hold on the fly wheel? 2. How to take the cam pullys and the crank sprocket off to replace the seals.? 3. once you are done with replacing the timing belt , do you have to turn the crank pully two complete revolution by hand ? to see timing in plac
On the side plate... Just pry or jack the engine appox. one inch up and the plate will come out. No need to remove the engine mount bolt. 7 years working on Lexus and never seen a tensioner go bad.... Guess it's better safe than sorry.
I use 1/2 inch Titanium IR impact removing Crank bolt without problem most of the time. However, there are times even the Honda Civic crank bolt can be a bear. Good Video.
I just did a 3.3 today, Same set up, I have a MAC tools 1/2"Drive AW480Q, It took that crank bolt out no problem. I experienced the exact same thing with the stud breaking at the top. I couldnt get mine out and had to get that plate out of the way. The thermostat is fun on that car too!
I definitely gotta say ditto on recommending a tensioner replacement., otherwise a couple of months down the road you'll wind up having driveability problems that, depending on your experience level, may be almost impossible to diagnose.
Another great video! Really like that you show the problems that can be encountered and also the way to correct them. There are a lot of other videos online that are nowhere near as informative, thanks for taking the time to make all of these!

you can heat that HB bolt with a torch briefly and it will stretch allowing the 1/2 in impact to take it off easily
