the the 45 ACP is a very potent round, thats why many law enforcement officers carry a gun chambered in that caliber, I keep one on my night stand too. The 44, like I said, is an awesome caliber, but for home defense...holy shit...it's loud...the flash it bright, and the recoil is heavy, I like a smaller gun I can control in a home defense situation, it's known as a real potent man stopped. I agree with you on the 44 not be real practical in many situations.
the 45 isn't adequate power for things such as bear, black or otherwise, nor is it a good hand gun hunting round. The 44 cartridge..is. Especially in situations where you don't want to have to carry a rifle or shotgun, a big bore handgun like the 44 mag. can save your life if you encounter a pissed off sow. The 45 ACP and the 45 LC are great rounds...but only for creatures of the 2 legged variety.

I've also been to more that a "few" shootings in my time. If you really had a knew a person that lost an arm it was either due to poor perfusion in the lower limb because of blood loss or infection of the limb. (your profile says your only 22 so I don't belive you have seen a person lose their arm)
