I remember a game, I think against the Red Devils, that ended with Charlie's head getting stomped against the track by a Red Devil who looked like Bluto.
Roller derby's answer to Gordie Howe. There was the Gordie Howe hat trick: a goal, and assist, and a fight. Charlie had the pass, the assist, and the brawl.
I remember the L.A. T-Birds skating against The Bombers. The best was when Ralphie Valladeres and Charlie O were being interviewed and O'Connell says " Look Dwarf! This ain't about points, it's about BLOCKING!" Ha Ha Ha
Charlie O Thank you. I learned to skate w/ my older brother, playing Roller Derby on the concrete sidewalk. It built character.
I was a trainee at the school at the Orange Show Fair Grounds when the Bombers came down to skate the Tbirds. I thought they were a great team. Made me want to move to San Fransisco and become a Bomber..so I did. Of course that was '73 when Derby went under so that ruined that idea.
I recall as a LA-T-Bird rookie we went to SF and played the SF Bay Bombers and our Danny Reilly (6) and Charlie (40) had a few fights but really no one won but as rookies we looked up to both of these men for they're the best in Roller Derby. Charlie spoke to me twice on the durning the game and said (Kid-keep it up you're going to make pro)...I did: God bless Charlie O':

An Calvello took Charlie away from Loretta Behrens making one huge hate fest for many decades. Sex and roller derby!
