  • Today my land-lady decided to shut the hot water tank off during the day to save energy. The tank keeps the water hot all day even when it's turned off.

  • It's called "The Little Gray Box" It has been around for quite a few years. We used to have one back in the 70's when I lived in NH.

  • Although video is quite old now, I feel like answering it anyway.

    There is 2 main reason.

1 - Energy was cheap, people didn't care.

2- A good, well insulated heated will keep hot water for hours.

The amount of enegy taken to get water from room temperature to shower temp is very high. It usually better to leave it on and have it to start every time it drops below a certain temperature.

FREE AND BEST BEST BEST way to save on water heating is to drop the temperature to the minimum.

  • I don't understand! I thought the US was ahead of the UK with most things but we have had hot water and heating timers in the UK for as long as I can remember which is more than 40 years ! We also have "Combi" boilers that just heat the water as you need it. Am I missing something here?

  • @goodchappy Unfortunately the Us is behind the times on most things with savings and being sustainable.

  • Since you found out that they made timer for the water heater, you should make another video installing it (wiring the timer to the heater). Step by step.Good video's. Let me know when you make the video's . I wanna watch it. Thanks Aloha

  • Very cool idea.

  • WHAT!!!!! ????? Got to get one!!!!!! What isle is it on?

You & your Mom have uncovered the best kept secret....

    Thanks so much!

  • @cheesestr4wz no problem glad i could help out, ill have to tell my moms you said thanks haha.

  • holy shit i want one , thanks for telling us

  • @AtrumKing93 no problem I'm just glad someone told me they exist lol

  • They make on demand water heaters that heat up the water instantly when you turn the faucet/washing machine etc on to the temperature of your choice. There is a huge tax credit for owning one and the state of SC is helping to pay for them. My house has a solar water heater to augment out traditional one. It is black water heater tanks inside of an insulated structure with glass on top to let in sunlight. The water coming from it is really hot in the summer.

  • @andy15m374l yep i love to have one of those on demand systems but they are pretty expensive.. maybe after i finish my solar project.. who knows.

  • it would be cool to put peltier units around the hot water heater. because peltier units take heat and convert it into electricity

  • @DannysCam really? i didn't know that... seems like you could make a solar heater out of cans and use those to create power .. am i correct?.. i smell a weekend project...lol

  • @BrainEatingZomb1e those peltier units are awsome if you apply 12 volts one side gets cold and the other very hot they use them in electric coolers but if you heat one side up with like a fire you get some electricity small amounts.. the best idea is to take some mirrors and reflect them on them in the hot sun. i have one i need to try that

  • @DannysCam well them how about make me a video and lets see how it works...

  • my dad used to use one back when I was a kid (I'm 46) but I think they should install them as part of the hot water heaters too.... it makes sense that they would. But noooooooo. I had an uncle that put the hot water heater on the side of a house that got sun all the time. raised it up on a cement platform and then put a small make shift green house kind of thing around it .. and the thing rarely turned on at all most of the year but when it was cold.

  • @Ishkiia wow cool idea "suns heat?" .. mmm now you got me thinking.

  • @BrainEatingZomb1e hahaha... I figured it would ... but it is seriously a great idea.. next time I get a house I'm doing it. (rent now) by the way I grew up in SC

  • i know some ppl. that have one build into there wall in the laundry room....it tells them all sorts of info. but they bought it and had it built in, and i think u r correct it should be standard. mine is also gas....i turned mine way down, but no damn hot water, but if i had a dial in my house were i could turn it on or off, i would do it.

  • yeah they should all come with one of those equipped :(

  • My brother in AZ put his hot water heater in the back yard to bake in the sun....it worked

  • @satanicinternational LOL good idea!

  • Never tired of you talking about conserving energy. :) I would love to use something like that but I would have to unscrew a wall every time I wanted to turn it on or off if it has to be attached to the water heater because mine is in a 'hidden closet' in a closet. *grin*

Looking at moving to a different house soon though so maybe the water heater in that one will be more easily accessible. :)

    - Heidi

  • @blackcat2enterprises actually you just wire it in.. im putting mine in the utility room.
