you know, when i was in my early years in guitar i searched for jazz and found this guy....now at my 5th year of playing....i told myself you sound familiar, well you were and i found at that you were that cool guy named "matt otten" that i saw before in my early days of playing. well, nice man :)
can someone tell me where i should begin. i am a rock guitarist who knows a little jazz, i play bossa nova pretty well but now i want to become a great smooth jazz guitarist. i have no idea where to begin, what to study, who to listen too and how to listen to music to absorb what i hear. please give me some tips people. PM me.
I believe you are my favorite and most influential of all the jazz guitarists that I have heard ! Your music sounds like it comes from within and not just a lot of scales and arpegios. I have always been in the rock/blues/country scene, but now I am delving into the Jazz scene. I have a long way to go, but I'll get there. Thanks for the influence !
What genre would this be classified besides Smooth Jazz?
I try to find this type of music (with a nice beat, and jazz keyboard), but its always mixed with regular jazz (with trumpet and bossa nova-esque guitar)
beautiful playing bro! I was into metal for a long time, but Smooth Jazz is my calling and I'm actually thinking about learning this style and writing some :D
I'm 17, not that age really matters, but this kind of musical is very calming and inspirational. Jazz songs constantly change and evolve into something new, I'd love to be able to play something like this.
Man I can tell how much you enjoy playing like this!!! Awesome music, beautiful smooth jazz!!! Maybe you could give us a little smile... but I still think you are great!!!
I've watched a few of your vids now Matt and I have to say, your sense of phrasing, space and restraint really sets you apart from your average jazz guitarist - top muso, very inspirational - thank you!
@wipitywopity QED is the abbreviation of the latin "quod erat demonstrandum" which I've read literally translates to "that which was to be proved" and is often used at the end of a philosophical argument.
Don't quote me on that, it's just my understanding of it. :)
I love that relaxed feel. Graceful lines with melodic richness. Been checking you out for a while and you just keep getting better and better. One thing: I would love to hear you blaze a little. You know, let your hair down and let it rip...just for fun.
Great stuff Matt, i'm just learning jazz techinque, and trying to incorporate in adding my own style to it. i love how smooth you roll over notes, and thats what i have to tighten up, i am used to playing more of a rock blues, lagato runs. i am going to have to definetly check out some of your workshops.. keep playing that silky smooth jazz, i'm looking forward to hear some more!!
Years ago I didn't care for Jazz but now I find the older I get I really like it. Its nice and mellow and relaxing. I'm trying to learn some on my guitar. This guy is good.
hey ItsDaJokerHAHAHAAAA next time try not to respond to the dude who pissed you off alright. If he lived in the south he would be dead by now i can assure you that. This is a great form of art and it is clear you know great art man do ya thing you a good dude.

@ikidskills Same with me, I'm 23 now but being brought up as a musician from the age of 6 by parents who have quite a musical background themselves, I've grown to adore 'real' music. I definitely prefer to listen to anything brass band or jazz sometimes even funk. But actally being in the gold coast brass band where I live has taught me to appreciate it even more. I love the feeling and how it sets the mood far greater than anything mainstream ever will.

Why are semi hollow guitars better for Jazz than solid bodies?
seamonster82 5 months ago
@seamonster82 i guess because of the back sound of an acoustic guitar that get into the pickups perfect for a clean sound with a moderate reverb.
