  • do you ship eels to austrailia please reply

  • can i do the samething for a40 gallon

  • oh shit.. i was gonna use dirty water to clean my aquarium.. good thing you told me to use clean water. lol

  • Adding sand at the very beginning? Quite risky because of potential algae attack IMO.

  • wat marine invertebrates can be housed in this type of a setup

    pls reply

  • Also standard heater. Also have gravel and bogwood....i doubt id be able to use gravel but what sand do they require?

  • Do you need any special liquids for a marine tank? Pls answer

  • Fake live rock and coral = FAIL

Never set up a saltwater AQ without liverock........the live rock is the best filtration system you can get.

  • @iPODtouchUSER1995 agreed

  • can you add live rock to this type of Aquarium

  • will a 35 gallon tank be acceptable?

  • what model wet/dry sump is that???????

  • wath fish appears in 00:23??? thaks :D

  • @rodulforosburg That is a flaming hawk fish.

  • Hi - what would be the best filtration for a 15,000 Litres per hour/3,900 gallons per hour pump? I am thinking of setting up an external tank with with an inlet and outlet with live rock, live sand and crystals/bioballs and coarse filter medium inside near the inlet progressing to fine near the outlet.

  • Is that fake coral because I want some clown fish but am not ready to do a reef tank because I'm still at school I thought a clown fish needed live coral?

  • Fake coral sucks!

  • @00vampirate00 It's better for the enviorment.

  • Babis253 check out some of my fish videos for neons and other fish that are suitable and what to have in the tank.

  • Thank you... you make things so simple and clear when other people make it so complicated.

  • I have a 12 gallon freshwater tropical fish tank, With a basic heater, filter, lighting.... I want to turn my tank into a marine saltwater tank

Can i keep everything the same but jus add salt ??

  • that is a beautiful tank!!! wow!! i have 5 freshwater aquariums and they are expensive enough. (i spend around $50 a month) (im a middle schooler btw) its all supported on my change box and small allowance. when i get more money doing odd jobs or whatever, i want a small saltwater tank. think it's a good idea?

  • should i rinse my decorations with saltwater or freshwater ?

  • i want to buy a 5-10 gallon tank!being an aquarist was always my passion and now that i have plenty of time and pleasure to start this hobby.....cause really consider it as a hobby id like some advice!what types of fish can i put in a tank of this size?i dont want e betta fish but something more like neon tetra etc!and is it ok if i plant live plants there having of course the appropriate filtration and temperature and ph!

  • Hi I just want you guys know that I am in love with your websites and tips. But I was also wondering what exact model pump that was in the video.

  • When I put new fish in the aquarium do I need to let the bag which contain the fish float 20 minutes then scoop the fish out and put it in the aquarium? And when can I put corals in.

  • i was told to cycle the tank 2 weeks to add a hardy fish >< not 24 hours xD in this case i may just add the clown fish,,, to my 30 gal. right now we r thinking about moving into a bigger home i will b gitting a 75 gal tank w/ a sump

  • he's funny or use a dam cloth kind of funny

  • I got a question. I want to buy all my Marine fish on your site, but in the video, it mentions to add 1 or 2 fish at a time. But if i want to buy one or two fish on your site, it says like $100 limit for live fish for like a $60 shipping fee... Spending $20 on a fish and $60 -80 on shipping doesn't seems very smart...

  • @Arteolike Standard shipping from our Live Aquaria site is $34.99. If you would like to call and speak with a customer service representative about your concerns and shipping questions, they would be more than happy to answer any questions you may have.

  • the red fish is like whos that talking

  • What model wet dry filter, protein skimmer, and pump should I use for my 50 gallon aquarium?

  • @monsterman1122 If you are looking for products to start your own aquarium you can check out our aquarium builder on our site. There are a lot of different types of aquariums, and the aquarium builder will show you how you can start the specific type you want to create.

  • how many gallons is the aquerium

  • @geraldgustav 55 gallons

  • @drsfostersmith im on a tight budget and i really want to set up a marine tank and im going to las vegas and Los angeles as a vacation trip, is marine equipment more cheaper in the US

  • What kind of protein skimmer and pump is used in this video?

  • @CHIMBOMBES the protein skimmer is the Marineland Advanced In-Sump Skimmer product 34168 on our aquatics site. The filter is the Eshopps Wet-Dry Filters product 32892 on our aquatics site. You can find the link to our site in the video description above. Thanks.

  • Hi I really hope you can answer this question since you haven't answered many other questions in the comments but what is the fish at 4:00? If it's a damsel tell me what kind please.

  • @TheBettaKeeper its a blue chromis

  • i have question can i put any kind of fish there such as koi and angel fishes??

  • hi i have a huge question, are those dead rocks? can you have a saltwater tanks with dead rock? and one more question what is the exact name of the additive you are using?

it is Dr Tims One and Only Live Nitrifying Bacteria for Saltwater

is this the one you are using? thanks :)

  • I have kept fresh water fish of a long while and have decided to start keeping marine fish. But I do not know how to take care of coral, as I know it is alive. Can I take coral out of the water? Am I allowed to touch coral? How will I know if my Coral dies? And can I put the coral in before the water is finished cycling or after? Does coral count as decoration?

  • @bparker65 people usually use the "skeletons" of the corals so theyr pretty dead u can touch them all you want

  • hello there i have no idea when it comes to marine tanks, and would like to post a comment here for some help .

i have kept different fish over the years but never marine , i am thinking of setting up a tank depending on what i need, i dont want to spend money on more filteration ect.

at the moment i keep african malawis , i have a 200 litre tank with dead coral sand and dead ocean rock a 300 w heater , and a fluval 405 external cannister filter is this suitable for a marine set up

    thanks.

  • you shouldn't rinse live sand or else it won't be live anymore

  • what size tank is this? 180L or bigger?

  • @InTheTropicalTank 50 gallon

  • how much would all the equipment, fish, coral, supplements, lighting, sand, RO unit, pump, sump, and protien skimmer cost for a 60litre tank (not including the price of the tank) cost?

  • Saltwater aquariums are too complicated for me!

The flame hawk-fish hates the camera and gives it the evil eye. xD

  • Iv watched toooonnnsss of vids and all I needed to see is this 1vid it told me everything I needed!

    Great job,

    Thanks

  • im surpirsed that this video doesnt mention anything about feeding the fish

  • could I mix the salt and water in the aquarium?

  • @yournamehere954 NOOOOOO!!! you cant get away with that like u can with freshwater!! you have to treat the water u put into your tank b4 hand...I think the best way is to get a bucket with its own power head, heater, and let it run 24-48 hours before changing water in your tank...use RO water for reef tanks, u can buy it at your LFS usually for less than a dollar a gallon, mine sells for 60 cents a gallon

  • I did exactly as said in this video and my fish are doing well! i have 2 chromis in their with a hermit crab, next week im going to buy some clownfish! thanks drs foster and smith!!!

  • @SHAHIDMAFIA haha you added chromis first? do they get along with your clownfish won't they bully them? especially by adding them first i would of suggested the reverce but then again im no expert.

  • ive never seen the point of buying a sump like that, for that price you could get a noraml tank 3x the size and put chambers for mangroves and moss and make a refugium.

  • The flame hawk is one of the coolest fish you could possibly have in a reef tank...I could stand there for minutes on end and watch him skip or jump from rock to rock - just a really sweet fish to own.

  • What size tank is that?

  • 50 or 55 gallon

  • Its a 55 gallon tank.

  • in the philippines marine fish and inverts are cheaper than the fresh water species, its like buying only a piece of candy,,,why? because this is the place where this marine livestock exported.

  • The red fish at 0:27 is like...

    "What the hell you doin?"

  • no way i have payed of 2teice that for my 30 gallon

  • I have to admit these vids are great compared to the practical fishkeeping vids.

  • I'm very shocked at the information on this video considering it's not that old and it's by a fairly large company. A lot of the information is very incorrect, especailly adding fish so soon and then using hardy fish to cycle!

  • Thanks for the reminder. Actually cycling with fish has come a long way from the early days you may be thinking of - especially with the addition of Dr. Tim's bacteria - making it safe as the ammonia method but faster. We haven't lost a fish yet!

  • they make it seem soo easy.. well its not well it is if you are doing it right but i just have a question what types of medications do you need for the aquarium and that wet and dry filter/sump what ever it is does it take cartriges after a certain time do you have to change something in their. And finally do you need to put a chiller, wavemaker, or a powerhead in the tank. Also the filter system and the overdrop filter do you have to put that together yourself. Thanks

  • @drsfostersmith Ive done exactly as you said, minus the wet dry filter, and my fish a thriving! thanks!!!

  • @cav812

    I completelly AGREE

  • is this a good video on how to set up one?

  • I think the skimmer should be started after 4 week not strait away. I'm not sure but that what I did with my reef aquarium and it's now running for more than a year with no serious problems.

  • Can someone please give me an estimate on how much does it cost to start an salt water aquarium? Im looking to get 40Gal tank and make my own stand..so I just need the prices for the rest of the equipment.

    thank you

  • @djEvilDude be prepared its expensive. depending on where you get supplies your looking at: Live Rock $2-$5 per lb depending on where it came from, Salt for 55 gal &20, filter (can range to several hundred), Protein Skimmer (same as filter) Testing supplies 20-$50. as you can see it can go from several hundred to over a thousand. Bigger the tank, easier it is, but more expensive.

  • @djEvilDude Depends where you get it from. so it can add up to about $400 $500 $600 to $1000 dollers but the bigger the tank the easier so good choice on 40gal. it takes a lot of time so just get a calculator go on the website for the store you wanna buy it from add up all the things you need and that should give you an answer. so i hope this answered your question.

  • no thats not even close my 30 gallon tank has coats me more then 700 dollers and no fish/corals yet

  • @con999000 were did the 700 dollars go? I am guessing in your lighting? I set up my 125 gallon around 5 years ago for $270.00, i did get the tank for only $50.00 and i do not have any corals.

  • Great vid. what sort of water pump are u using, and can u use a normal pump or does it have to be saltwater based pump

  • yes I agree, great video but shouldn't you add the rocks then the live sand substrate because the marine fish can burrow under the sand and then get crushed by the coral/rocks because it leans over to the way where the fish has burrowed...

You've still done a great job though mate

  • Hey in one year when i move into my new house i want a 75 gallon reef tank. i plan on getting 20 pounds of live rock to start with and get more as i go on. I need to know where i could buy a farely cheap sump that is sutable for my size tank? And what protein skimmer is also suitable? Great vid and im gonna subscribe and check out your site. And i also need to know what to do if the gravity measuring thing doesnt read where it supposed to and what to do and what water should i use to make s/w?

  • What kind of overflow box are you using?

  • well if the tank is anything larger than 30 gallon, a protein skimmer is recommended

  • a protein skimmer is always recommended

  • fill a 55 gallon container with salt water? Yh i have those just lying around the house lol. good vid though. nice demostrations

  • @NeWbOy103 LOL, lucky you I'll just use my good ol' bathtub ;)

  • You dont need a protein skimmer, but its best if you do. :-)

  • better than any book

  • i,m just setting up for my first marine tank and this vid is better than any book, well done mate, easy to understand, vid, do more, cheers

  • I wonder why petstore keep saying your salinity should be bet 1.021 - 1.025 so why my fish got die on the range. I feed them once a day to avoid overfeeding.

When I bought fish in petstore in my area I measure the salinity and it had 1.017 only. So I just follow what the reading in the petstore I bought...?? any idea why? thanks

  • No live rock?

    2 weeks to cycle?

    Stocking so soon?

    No CUC?

You have an excellent website with great info but this guide is questionable IMO

  • great video thank you so much

  • it really has to run for a month

  • very good guide, if i am starting 1, but was scared that i wouldent no how, but now that that i have seen this, i will have no problem :3

  • nice but expensive.... :(

  • this is a perfect video for all beginners like me 5 *!!!

  • 24 hours is MUCH to early to add fish!

even for a freshwater aq. let alone saltwater!!!

  • wow i realy didnt know about all this equipment, i was told all i needed was a normal freshwater set up but with salf water, what are all the protine skimmer an all that outher stuff under thetank for and do you have to have them fora fish only set up

  • protine skimmer gets rid of all the bad protine in the water to make it more pristine. a sump is just a little tank that sits under the main tank to hold stuff like spagettii moss (i think its called that) live rock or live sand and a filter pad. it might also have the heater or a chiller. and other units. its just reil a storage area for erevything so its all hidden and not in your main tank.

you dont need it for a fish only but its a good idea. but some people will say other wise

  • You don't need one if you do large, weekly (if not more regularly than that) water changes. It is very much advisable to have one though.

Marine habitats are VERY stable and VERY sensitive to parameter changes. This is why marine's are so much harder than freshwater.

  • By the way, Nice video.

  • I would love to hav a nice reef tank. I just wish I had enough money to do so.

  • You don't cycle with fish, it's just cruel and completely backward. Just let it cycle itself with a ammonia source over 4-6 weeks or until it is ready.

  • Actually cycling with fish has come a long way from the early days you may be thinking of - especially with the addition of Dr. Tim's bacteria - making it safe as the ammonia method but faster. We haven't lost a fish yet!

  • thankyou very helpfull :-D

  • pretty good video even though i dont agree with theyer filtration or adding fake decorations.

  • this video is great, the only thing i would do differently is add any liverock or larger ornaments first before adding the sand to anchor the rock better.

  • great way of explanation

  • great thanks

  • Wow. Beautiful tank. Thanks!

  • nice vid and very nice step by step how to's...

  • Extremely informative. I would definitely follow your guide when I feel ready to start a marine aquarium. Thanks.

  • I'm buying a 100 gallon saltwater tank and this video will be really helpful to me. Thanks Dr's!

  • do not rinse your live sand!!!!

  • they r rinsing the live sand of dust so the water clears faster and it doesn't screw up the filters etc.... the bacteria on live sand can live on the sand if it is rinsed with freshwater or even dry for a few days.

  • good vid!

  • wow very nice video... but some of the steps were unnecasary.

  • very nice video..thank you!
