I prefer 22 caliber for target practice because the noise is low and has no kick but power is good and you can buy 500 rounds for $10. For serious mountain hunting I like flat, long-range 270 Winchester caliber and for forest deer I prefer 243win.
I have several rifles. for long range hunting I am using a stainless savage 7mm rem mag with custom made Leupold vx-iii 8.5-25x50 for the rifle and ammo I am using, and I shoot federal ballistic tip 150 gr. it is one of the most flat flying bullets. actually I sdearched a lot on this subject and the ballistics program on federal and remington website were great help.
7mm compared to 270Win has more punch and more drop. I use boattail Spire-point 130grains- I bought a book by Hornady about 2 decades ago and that's a great source of info. Check videos on CheyTac rifles, that's the best in America. Selling for $3500-10,000
