I have read it. Try reading some others too, although it's an excellent book, I feel it is to much of a personal subject for the authors to write a balanced account. Yes, he made mistakes but despite my western education I can't help but feel he stopped China falling into another warring states period. Good or Bad he was a remarkable man. Even in the "demorcratic" west it is unheard of for a peasent to end up leading the country.

I have read it. Try reading some others too, although it's an excellent book, I feel it is to much of a personal subject for the authors to write a balanced account. Now don't think I'm some nut who goes around preaching Mao thought, far from it but the fact is, yes he was a monster, but a monster who kept China as one and thats remarkable(despite its often possitive use, remarkable doesn't nescessarily mean good) know matter which way you look at it.

Can you explain why you think that? Again, I will say that I' m not some pro Mao nut, I'm not, but i find it hard to see how he(or rather he was the leader of the people who did) didn't unite China as one. Yes brutally, but again I will say,it is a remarkable feat. This doesn't mean I agree with the way he did it or anything like that it just means I'm not going subscribe to Ms Changs spin, no questions asked just because she's Chinese and waved a little red book around when she was young.

China under Mao control become strong both in military and industry. Running a government with terror was a precise strategy to maintain a very vast China. You are a fucking idiot. China was ruled by America and Britain up to 1949. British had warships in Yangtze in 1949 until the PLA blasted them out of the water. If a country is not independent how can it be economically strong?
China challenged the two greatest superpowers of the time USA and Soviet Russia and beat both - Korean War, Zhenbao Island. China also helped Viet Minh defeat French at Dien Bien Phu. And in fact almost EVERY liberation movement in world was supported by CHINA!

Chinese around the world should be aware though that the West does not want China to be too powerful and will do its best to sabotage our rise. We should always be on our guard against America and Britain. Mao made mistakes - however the number of people he deliberately set out to kill is quite low - in fact as a proportion of overall population, Chinese revolution killed less than French and American. Chairman Mao always enjoined against wrong or hasty executions.

under Chiang's rule, china was still in a state of feudalism. this whole point is proved by the mass number of peasants (in china at the time) that supported mao's revolution, and only the mass number of peasants made it possible. i'm glad that mao overthrew chiang, ofcourse mao wasn't perfect, but he was much better than chiang.
