I really am not sure I can trust this game after the last one... I still can see that you don't control all of your party. Thats a small detail but doesn't allow me to connect to the chars. I am still on the edge about trying 2 though... Maybe some of the things are fixed?

I heard FFXIII was too much story and not enough gameplay while FFXIII-2 has gameplay galore but no closure. I'm taking that FFXIII-3 might actually be in the works and will be the finale to this Cocoon/Pulse adventure and be the Final Fantasy a lot of people were waiting for rich in story and gameplay together. Imagine that, the Final Fantasy XIII by 3 Ultima Edition containing all 3 games with every DLC... hopefully.

@Dellneph I don't really agree with that. FFXIII's storytelling was pretty much non-existent from the start, you had absolutely no idea what was going on unless you read through all the small narratives in the menu (which were not automatically given to you, you had to actually hunt for them). The game basically panned out like this: Run, run, run, fight, run, run, run, fight, run, run, run, stupidly difficult boss... and repeat. I wouldn't have even minded if they had included towns... but wait

@drummerman55 Yeah, it was mostly back-story about the world hidden in the datalogs while we watched each character deal with their own drama through cut-scenes to the point where they eventually stopped running and joined together to save the world. It may have been meant as an introduction to form a series of FFXIII-related games if Square was intending to make a part 2 and 3 despite how well/poorly FFXIII did since cut content from FFXIII was equivalent to a game itself.

@Dellneph Despite my last comment, I will still probably buy this game seeing as iv been a final fantasy fan for a good few 12 or so years. I just hope that this one isn't anywhere near as disappointing as the last.

@drummerman55 I've been playing this for several hrs now and am loving every moment of it. it's definitely a big step into more fun, fast-paced gameplay. Training the monsters captured after a random battle is taking up a good chunk of my time because i can fuse several monsters i leveled up into one to increase the stats of one i plan to keep long-term like my Behemoth. It sucks you can't type a name for your monster companions, but i deal with it through Random Name's 1st choice.

@drummerman55 For gameplay, yes. It offers more than ff13 in game mechanics because the first game laid the groundwork for ff13-2 to build on. I have yet to see if the story, as a whole, is any good but it has been entertaining so far. The open-world aspect is not in an actual world but in a menu displaying time periods of a particular location you can travel to. On the top right of this menu, the hexagons represent mini-worlds yet to be unlocked which are similar to SMG2 and KH.

@drummerman55 By mini-worlds i mean the locations are bigger than most of the areas in ff13 with multiple paths to let you explore rather than get straight to the next area as quick as possible. They're not Archylte Steppe big but offer more exploration than a place as small as Oerba.

I've looked through a few FF games and I see some differences in style and systems and such, but the fact of the matter is in all of them all you're doing is going through a menu and watching them attack and not attacking by yourself really. I don't really dislike any of them for this at all, but none of them sound that "exciting". So the "underwhelmed" comments sound kinda weird to me. Basically they're all pretty much the same thing overall. Sounds like pickiness is about.

@Axxidous Apparently you've never played a turn-based RPG before. Or....the majority of RPGs before. What you want is an Action RPG.

And clicking the command to Attack is Attacking. It's just from a strategic level, not a literal level.

@JakuhoShiro i don't really see how you would play the game differently :P you push one button in every fight and occasionally switch team setup if you need to heal. if you want to play without using the quick button you're doing things to slow witch means in the harder fights you'll most likely die. pluss you only controll one character, and that alone made me loose a lot of faith in the game. I really hope they make some changes to the combat style, cause eventually it gets boring

@JakuhoShiro Well, that's a bit of a generalisation. I completed it, beat 62/64 side missions and levelled up my characters aloooot, (all because i'm a final fantasy fan and feel the need to perfect my game) and still felt underwhelmed. Now you can't say I didn't know how. I squeezed as much enjoyment as I could out of it, and I can't say it was a complete waste, but it was definately lacking the quality and enjoyment factor that defines the name final fantasy. for me anyway.

@JakuhoShiro Although I'm currently playing through my second playthrough of XIII, and finding it to be a decent enough title, my first time through I straight up hated it. I blame that mostly on my initial (extreme) disappointment. But I knew full well how to play (who doesn't? It's AUTO-BATTLE for christ's sakes). My list of major flaws comes from it's ridiculous story and unlikeable characters.

To clarify (2nd playthrough), the story is actually really great. It's just really awful writing.

@Odiekun I agree, those were my problems with the game. The story seemed to lack a middle as all of the background mythology stuff was stuffed down your throat in the first couple of chapters and then the plot kinda just floats along meaninglessly until the end. The only characters I liked were Sazh, Lightning (at times), and Amodar, even though he wasn't a huge character. The only characters out of everyone.

@sunheart123 The only characters in the main party I loved were Lightning and Fang. I liked Hope well enough once his balls finally dropped, but I couldn't stand Snow or Vanille. Which is a shame because Vanille was an excellent character overshadowed but complete and utter insanity. As for Sazh, I also really liked Sazh, but I cannot, simply CANNOT get past his stereotypical character design. Really, the second major black character has an afro, guns, and a friggin CAR for a summon? Come on SE.

@sunheart123 That's the point of renting games actually. To test out a game and see if you really want it or not. Sometimes advertisements can do that for you but sometimes the advertising just doesn't explain how much you'd end up actually enjoying it. Sometimes the ads sounds amazing but the game feels wrong. Renting it allows you to see if you like it or not without being forced to own it yet. If you don't finish but like the game, you can just go buy it afterwards.

@sunheart123 Downloading the demo is a good idea. The demo is really long & fun and it will give you a good idea of how the game play like. The demo even got side quests.
