Should the snare line up with the kick or the cymbal, because I've seen both. I can line up the kick with the cymbal if I use my left hand for the snare, and then the opposite if I reverse it, but that's just because I apparently have my foot synced up with my right hand already o.0
@awkwardh1ppo id say yes but i imagine you have alot of other things down on drums. blasts are the only thing that came easy for me, ive been playing almost 3 years also. i have some videos of myself if you'd like an idea
im a normal drummer but for blast beat and all im a newbie :D ! i just start praticing it ! its pretty fun :P i try to make some beat with my cymbals and all :P and im praticing the single foot blast :)
Hey I enjoy your videos, do you have any tips for pain in the wrists? I can play at these speeds for about 10 min then I start to having use more arm than wrist and fingers because of pain.
@klootzaak1975 With the fingers I feel ya man.. The only thing to do is everyday play as long as you can till you feel your fingers getting tense.. no pain just tense.. Take a break and do it again in 20 to 30 mins. Repeat –Repeat-Repeat. Don’t play until you are feeling pain because you can damage nerves and other crap in your wrists and hands. To build madd stamina you have to build hand strength. When I was playing a lot I used a practice pad and use to play blasts while watching Tv .
@nx2overide no you only get pain when you twist your hand to play. make sure you keep your wrist straight then you should be fine. Thats what my drum teacher told me
@spyrospyrospyro123 Twist your wrist? We are not using out wrist to play the blast only to hold the position on the stick.. as you can see in the video I'm playing with my wrist slightly bent.. as long as you are using your fingers to move the stick this is fine. (with little wrist movement). but if you notice my thumbs are pointed up on my snare hand if you blast using your wrist like that full on wrist you will get carpal tunnel quick.
for the fulcrum im not sure where to put the stick. On the finger next to your thumb which is the fulcrum does the stick balance near the tip of your finger near the knuckle or below?
@nx2overide Using a practice pad is insanely helpful. That's how I learned. I got to the point where like override did, I'd sit in front of the tv and just watch whatever and before I knew it I had practiced through an hour long tv show.
this is probably the only intelligent video on "Blast beats" on you tube....

I dont play drums, I play bass, but I was researching black metal and it said it uses a lot of blast beats, so I decided to look it up and WOAH, that was hectic stuff. Nice vid :)
For the record I dont like black metal, not my kinda style....
what i use to build speed and control in blast beating, was that i had used heavyer sticks, vic firth 2b american classic, so now when i use 5a's or 5b's i have very fast speed and control
I'm not too great at this ultra quick DM blast beats, I'm more like the 180-210bpm BM blast beat guy. I need to learn how to do better DM sounding blasts.
Yeah this was helpful I thought there was a certain technique you had to use in order to blast beat cause whenever I try to go fast my stick turns into a tornado and its just sloppy so thanks.
easy way to cheat if you're better on your right hand is to move your right hand to the snare and play 8ths with your left on the cymbal. But you should learn it with both hands anyway.
i remember the hardest part when i was learning wasnt SO much the speed or endurance it was keeping the snare and bass opposing instead of on the same note
you can blast any way you want, playing the bass drum with the cymbal is a euro blast, all together is a straight blast, a completely random one is a completely random one, blasts are a style and type of beat not a specific sticking.
i have a question im ina band were the band mates expect me to do paul from cannibal type stuff. i can only do snare blast with like a hi hat thing heres how u put it i hit the snare like its the hi hat and hit the hi hat like its the snare. wat do i do???
Alright nx2overide. I'm just fucking frustrated. I can play technical shit like Tool, and hard rock shit like Disturbed, but when it comes down to stuff like Suicide Silence, The Black Dahila Murder, etc... I SUCK! How can I improve? I need better FAST foot work, better FAST (single handed) snare work, and i need help keeping these things independent. They usually get mushed together into a big fucking pile of bad sound after about 5-10 seconds. It's not clear it's just a fucking mess. HELP
@Prophecyguild You want some advice? Well here it is...........practice. There's no shortcuts. Just work your ass off man and work at it everyday. I would recommend working out and doing calf raises and other things to strengthen all of your muscles so that you'll have a lot of stamina so that you can keep your double bass clean for longer periods of time. but other than just practice your ass off man.............
@FunkyAlfonzo a few tips you can do is sit up straight, make sure you have a center of gravity so that when you're using both feet you're staying centered and not swaying. If you're playing heel up you need to sit just a little higher so that you're not having to strain to hold your heels up when you're playing fast. It should feel natural. it also helps your foot to swivel more when you're playing really fast double bass strokes. hope that helps
@FunkyAlfonzo but as an addition to what i said, also make sure that you're not sitting to high up to where you're knees are on a downward incline because then gravity will be working against you. Its all about having a center of gravity! i would highly recommend getting a bass drum practice pad because with those you have to do most of the work and its a lot harder than playing on an actual bass drum. so using one of those will strengthen your muscles.
it took me 2 hours to learn gravity blast, I been trying this for almost 2 months and nothing. I don't see the difference if you use your fingers or wrists to blast
@danielong1 just practice with whatever blast is easy to you... after 1 week you cAN gain more endurance.. then the next week u start to get faster over and over the process goes
Kinda thin - the sticks i'm using in this video are crap sticks.. I usually use Steve Gadd Signature (Vic Firth SSG) Series Drumsticks, Black - Nylon tip. I practice with heavy sticks every other band practice cause it helps strengthen my hands.
@nx2overide Yah alternating is the traditional blast, it was the first type on record. The altogether blast came along later on. Alternating sounds much better IMHO.
Blasts r meant to be on Snare hit: they match the double bass. That's why "non-drummers' don't like blasts cuz they find them kinda ugly, while drummers find it amazing because of the speed and technique it requires.
Also, if you are going to blast, you should learn to control the stick with your fingers. This will help you not get tired as fast and it will be easier to go at high speeds.
then just practice at a speed where ur SURE to keep up w/ the rhythm. Slowly go up, then when it messes up, try again at the speed u were comfortable with. After some time try again and ull se =)
right on... but think about it this way.. now you can reverse it and create a different textures by doing it 1 yay for 2 bars and do it the other for 2 bars.. I can do that too its sick!
A good way to build up blasting is to do it in three hit bursts, rather than just a stream. You don't fatigue as quickly, your timing will be more solid, and it'll eventually get you to where you wanna be. You can build up double bass speed by doing fast quads too.
Also, doing quick fills with fingers rather than wrist will build up your finger strength.
Eventually you wanna be using majority fingers and some wrist, I'm still building up mine so I can cover some Suicide Silence songs.. lol
There 8ths notes. If you wana learn how to properly blast buy george kollias intense metal drumming dvd its packed with over 3hours of drumming stuff and covers all the types of blast beat and variations.
totally awesome of you Winston ....you are such a nice guy....you should have a whole nation of newbie bangers following you around and seeking guidance, leading hordes of semi-naked groupies to your door to bow before your kickdrum and eat cherries from the palm of your hand........you're so fuckin rock !!!
yep i keep a back up snare with me.. Thats the drum between my legs FYI.. not sure if you know the lingo.. I have busted one in the middle of a show once.. backups are good :)
Yea man I'm trying to build up my blasting right now. I'm using two feet and i'm cutting the speed in half with my left hand on the high hat while my right is on the snare.
Eventually I want my left hand as strong as my right, but I basically wanna feel satisfied with my right first.
yep that's a good way to learn.. i alternate speeds on my ride/hihat hand live to give a different feel in different area of songs. from 8s to 16s also switching between single footed and double gives you a different tone too cause single footed you can add a triplet with the other foot.
That was awesome. I need to try that when every one is awake tomorrow. I hope you share more of your drum video lessons.Thank you for sharing this. God bless you and your family.
I argue that single bass drum beat is the true blast beat. Double bass I always thought as was cheating.

totally awesome of you Winston ....you are such a nice guy....you should have a whole nation of newbie bangers following you around and seeking guidance, leading hordes of semi-naked groupies to your door to bow before your kickdrum and eat cherries from the palm of your hand........you're so fuckin rock !!!

yep i keep a back up snare with me..

Thanx for the video!

yep that's a good way to learn.. i alternate speeds on my ride/hihat hand live to give a different feel in different area of songs. from 8s to 16s also switching between single footed and double gives you a different tone too cause single footed you can add a triplet with the other foot.

Nice man
Could always incorperate double strokes on that too and double pedal anlong with blast then doubles then blast then doubles. The formula for spead is
Learn to crawl before you can walk and walk before you can run.
Thats how you create speed.
you agree?
Stay safe online and in the real world.
