this whole movie was such a wonderful surprise, gotta admit i didn't expect it to be half this good. in my top three pixar movies with incredibles and toy story. not sure how to rank them.
I didn't cry, until i saw "Thanks for the adventure, now go have a new one! Love: Ellie" and with the music in the background. The look on his face. it's just. i can't even.
What makes it sad is that those first few pages of Ellie's past adventures...it causes him to believe he held her back in life. He felt that he was at fault for Ellie being able to go on the grand adventure. Then I REALLY tear up when he discovers those pages he hasn't seen and realizes that Ellie considered him to be an important part of her life and her real grand adventure.
@GodsofPie What really makes me feel sad is the part from 2:35 - through the rest of the video! It really hits me when (At 2:35) when it shows the pic of her looking out of the window and the pics of them together. Then at 2:52 when he looks at her note and it reads: "Thanks for the adventure-Now go have a new one!Love,Ellie",that's what makes me REALLY want to cry!And I completely agree with your comment, you've made a point that I haven't realized :)
I think I won: I saw Up at a cinema under the stars, at the beginning of a summer night. The cinema wa full of kids, but hell I was the only one about to go suicide myself.
During Up's production, a young cancer patient had very much wanted to see the film, but was bed-ridden and hooked up to life support. Her mother contacted Pixar, and Pixar sent representatives to screen a DVD copy of the film for the girl, and give her some movie tie-in merchandise for free. At that point, the girl was unable to open her eyes, and so her mother described every scene to her as she watched the movie. She passed away several hours afterwards, but she went happy.
Everyone always goes on about how sad the infamous montage is, but this is the scene where I really teared up. Throughout the movie, you really see what an impression Ellie had on Carl's life, and how he emotionally calls to her when all hope is lost. I did always wonder who took all those photos though...
@videogamenostalgia >> Probably my favorite scene, along with the one that comes after. I actually remember watching this in theaters, and when the whole montage happened and it got so sad, a mother behind me mentioned, "Oh, God, this is MARLEY AND ME all over again." Just another night at the movies. Ah, memories, we cherish thee.....
this scene embodies everlasting love and also the pain that a lost love can bring, this is so well realised, that it's impossible to stay cold as a stone when watching it. makes me cry all the time as well.
can you imagine a guy in a movie theatre surrounded by kids and being the only one that laughed the hardest and cried the most??? that was ME!!!! damn Pixar... no wonder you are the king!
I saw this AT Pixar, and I remember being the one in the audience around all the family and friends like biting my sweatshirt so I wouldn't go in to full blown sobs. Still makes me cry. LOVE THIS.
The profound view Pixar has of the human condition is unbelievable. There's no other movie company out there that can capture the human condition like they can.
This movie and this scene is amazing. Notice the colors and then beginning and end of the movie and esp in this scene. Dark then light That combined with the color just makes you want cry, they lighten up together.
@blueberriesmoo Wow, I didn't realize this! Especially if you compare 0:49 with 3:15 or around there. It's almost as if in the latter, he's "woken up" to present day, realizing the gift of Russell he's been given.
If I paid full admission for this movie and they only showed me 10 minutes with no dialogue (Young Carl and Ellie, Married Life, Stuff We Did) I would have walked out feeling that I got every cent's worth and then some.
@MissMerida Yep, the pictures could have been better. The point was obviously made anyway, but if I could improve this movie in any way, it would be to place these pictures in chronological order with the pictures being more "believeable." I mean, they're sitting having breakfast together - who's taking the picture? I like the way the pictures convey their simple lives, though. This movie just plain rocks, regardless.
i love how the simplicity of his actions get across to you how he feels and what was happening, no words at all, he opens the book with heartache and sadness yet stumbles on his wife's secret of her love for him as her adventure, releasing him from the endless cycle of blame and sadness, allowing him to life the rest of his life without holding back. making her memory of love and happiness instead of bitterness, the truth of all love can be bitter and sweet depending on simple moments :)
What a scene. I am so tough, stiff, so manly at school. But when this part came up, I cried. Maybe I was related to that part, that it happened to me. Dang, best scene.
Definitely one of the best scenes in Up, makes people go all soft inside like a marshmallow over a fire. Also if you notice, the scene starts off slightly desaturated and as Carl flips through the book, the scene gets more colorful. How interesting is that to set the mood!
God this part in the movie was just absolutely heartbreaking. The subtle movements of it, the way he looks over at her chair and "crosses his heart". This movie was even more proof that cartoons can appeal to all ages, young and old. Sure younger kids wouldn't surely understand the depth of this scene, Loosing your life long lover, and taking that step in recovering grief, forgetting the sad and remembering the good. Pixar is just incredible.
Only one group of people can make a children's animated movie about loss of a loved one, robots falling in love and rats becoming chefs. And that is the genius of Pixar!!!
Me too. I cry every time. And the beautiful theme of the film...I was immediately taken by it. I bought this piece on ITunes. What a great film this is.
