  • When you sing, and especially is it is something you wrote, there is a cadence that you want to keep and when someone else accompanies you, it is lost, and this was the way to do it...after all she was there and capable.. She was a singer in this room, among singers This was her song, and she he took the lead and had her chorus of special singers backing her up. That is how it should have been .

BEAUTIFUL !! MOVING!! The Spirit was definitely in THIS house !!

  • Thank you for posting this. I had never seen her before and this was such a blessing. She is such a truly inspired Spirit !! What a gift she was given and she used it to serve her Lord.

  • My mom (her niece) would tell us stories of how much of a perfectionist Aunt Doe was. Our family had some GOD given vocallist and there was nothing like when she would come in town and get the family together and they would sing from sun up to sun down.

  • She reminds me of my mother who played piano many years at our church in Minneapolis and in Iowa later on. Doris was quite talented and very humble, just like my mother. I could watch this video a million times. God Bless you for sharing.

  • I love Doris Akers! She reminds me of and looks just like my great aunt who was also a musician and song writer and like Doris was able to play by ear starting at a young age...There aren't as many anointed women like that now a days.

  • I remember hearing this song sung in church when I was a kid. I had wondered for years who wrote it, and just found out via this video. I love this song. I am learning more about Doris and her music some of which I sang growing up and church and never knew it was written by her. Thank you for sharing this video and the others.

  • Sweet Jesus was one of the first songs I sang as a young boy.. I would listen to Doris's records for hours, over and over again. What an anointing rested on her. She was one of a kind as Danniebell wrote in one of her songs "A designer's original.

  • God Bless you Doris. You are my angel from above!!! What a song Amen!!!

  • LOVE IT!!

  • I saw this about 6 years ago on video and have looked for it ever since. Thank you for having it here.

  • Beautiful

  • SO BLESSED!!!!

  • Give credit to Bill - It seems he thoroughly enjoyed getting the boot. It shows us that God has a sense of humor - especially when are don't take ourselves too seriously. It is a blessing when we can worship and enjoy each other without our ego getting in the way.

  • @AkiliKumasi I totally agree. I believe that Doris was a close personal friend of the Gaithers. I don't believe she could have done it if the friendship and respect factors were not there. She was also kind of like an elder to him so that also carried some weight in this situation. I believe everyone present at this video taping understood the situation and all found it very enjoyable and even anticipated when she took over.

  • This is an older song, (almost as old as me) Doris Akers wrote this song and sings it beautifully in this video.

She and her lovely voice have passed on and now it requires other voices

to continue singing this wonderful song.

  • Wow! I had tears of joy all the way through this wonderful piece. Thank you God for sending us Doris, it seems like she was here such a short time. God is merciful to his people and willing to send us people who will inspire us and lead us along His Path... Thank you Jesus! I know Doris is at your feet singing like the Angel she is.. Sweet Jesus indeed....

  • When Bill is hearing gospel music performed well, he is like a kid in a candy store. His face really lights up when he is listening to Vestal Goodman, Dottie Rambo, The Booth Brothers, etc.

  • loved it I love jesus

  • She is very light skinned.

If I havent read wikipedia, I woudda thought she was white.

But whatever race she was, she is another famous woman of the gospel train

  • At least in a "serious" song. Mark Lowry does it all the time in the "non-serious" ones.

  • its a blessing to all

  • I get goosebumps just listening to this. I love these old gospels songs.

  • Doris makes the song into a "spiritual".

You can FEEL the broken hearted blues

ripple through your soul when she plays

    and sings. WHAT A GIFT!

  • Sure! Doris was a gift to bless the kingdom of God even after her depature

may we avail ourselves like she did

  • Absolutely no ego or pretentiousness in Bill. LOL

  • In the early 90s I became very ill, I had one record and it was Doris Akers and the lead song on the record was Walk in the Sunshine. I nearly died, this record and prayer has brought me out! Daughter of God is who Doris Akers was, since I have lost the record to fire, it would do my heart good to find amother one. God Bless the Church! Bro. Burress

  • I like these people. We need more of them.

  • lol bill ran away like saying it only sounds better when doris plays it herself..

  • I watch this video all the time, she was a wonderful person. Love her dearly!!

  • is she black ar white? just want 2 know

  • Her bio says she is black.

  • Doris was an amazing song writer, composer, and pianist!! Truly God talented and blessed!!

  • Take over the Piano, Doris!!!

:) Doris Akers was one of the few Black Gospel artists whose songs crossed over into Southern/White Gospel - witness the Gaither videos she guests in. Her songs are still touching and blessing people!

  • It seems to me that Doris was deeply loved by many people. I never had the honor of meeting her, but I dont lose hope that one day we will all be re-united

in heaven. We will meet the Lord our Savior (first and foremost) then with our loved ones to spend eternity in heaven.

We will rejoice with the ones who prevailed thru the end. Can't wait 'til I reunite with my mother and sister as well.

See you there shortly. What a precious song. God bless!

  • when I meet Miss Doris in Heaven, I am going to sing with her, and hug her to bits!!

  • Amen to that!!!

  • I love Doris Akers. Nancy Harmon used to sing some of her songs. Both great gospel singers.

  • with the most deference to Bill, who can possibly accompany Doris but Doris!@!!!

the Holy Spirit annoints that voice and the keyboards like no other I have ever heard!

  • LOL. This is true, but hey, at least she gave him a chance! But being the perfectionist she was, when his playing wasn't up to par, she gave him the boot!! Thanks for your comment!! God bless!

  • This song was written for the Pastor of the SKY PILOT REVIVAL CENTER, Dr. Aubey Lee. He would always get up and say, SWEET JESUS at every service. Doris wrote the song for him, and all of us!!!

  • This is true, in the song's dedication it says:

"Inspired by words of Dr. Aubrey J. Lee, "Sky Pilot" Revival Center, Los Angeles".

  • Nobody can play it like Doris. I attended SKY PILOT CHURCH in the 60's and remember the choir and Doris well. I miss those days, but thank God for this video and I have collected all her albums.

  • Get it Doris!! i really thought Bill was going to get to accompany her..LOL

  • She's great...

  • Yes, she is! I recommend you watch my other vids of her, if you haven't already done so... truly unique artist!

  • @karma342

I came across this great woman of God a few days ago on YouTube and I cannot stop listening to her. Her voice and so annoiting, powerful, and blessed.

  • HAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAH

  • It only took the first line of the song and then she took over. Whatta gal.
