Word has it that Larson got the 1st 2 '82 T/As off the line and made them the pilot cars (Ones with the blunt mockup nose) and presented the show in a 30-45 preview then when it was greenlit, Larson made changes to make KITT look the way we all know.
They couldn't use a new trans am because GM wasn't making a new trans am. The only reason they used an '82 in the original was because the show was sponsered by GM and they had just built the new trans am and camero. Ford sponsered this one so they wanted to used the new Mustang. It's all about marketing folks

The only reason it was a Mustang is because Ford sponsored the new show and so wanted their Mustang as the showpiece. As for alternatives, there are plenty, if you need to update KITT. The new upcoming Camaro is an option but an even better option would be the 2012 corvette, they carry the essence of the same styling of the Trans Am. Heck the 98 Trans Am would have been a better choice.

This is the KITT that I will always favor. The car couldn't have been a more perfect fit. The sleek lines Pontiac gave this car made it very dashing and subtly sexy.
While the new Mustang is alright for average driving, I'd hardly consider it worthy or sleek or fast enough to become the Knight 3000. The build is all wrong for something meant to go 300+. I'll admit I kinda like 2010s, but again, they just don't fit the part. T/As are better suited.
While I agree that would've been more fitting. You have to keep in mind that there are not enough affordable American Muscle cars available at the time that looked similar to KITT-Prime (aka the original KITT). When you think about it- the Mustang was really the only choice they had, considering that Ford had a nice tie in with the shoe. But look at it from the Studio's POV, if a car company is going to supply you with a car, would you say no?
@KITT382 uh ok? if it has 800 hp then y is it in ur driveway, im talking about stock with minor adjustments to them, not completeley rebuilt engines, or gears, trans, etc. modding a vehicle is completely different, ive seen fored fiestas with alot of power on the internet, you can make anything fast!

Oh.. To clarify. On the original show they used around 14 cars per season. Most of the jumps and stunts were with a real car. They started using model cars later in the series. They had 4 complete cars and the rest were stunt cars. There is an original car in a museum and 1 hero car left that was recently sold here in California for 150,000 dollars. Ok... The new and cancelled Knight Rider was garbage. The car was a 2009 Ford Mustang Shelby GT 500KR. Not a "Cobra". The original K.I.T.T had the pop up headlights and the lights in the lower section of the bumper. I am almost done building my own K.I.T.T from a 1984 Pontiac Trans Am. I think when they made the new show a 09' Corvette Z06 would've been perfect.

Did anyone notice that in the new series you can see the scrapped parts from K.I.T.T's old body besides the steering wheel? VERY SAD INDEED. This new Knight Rider just doesn't cut it for me.
The new show is horrible, a 2 hour long Mustang commercial in itself, and then there's the damn Ford Focus commercials with the actor guy. Even a 7 year old 2001 Firebird would've made a better looking KITT. NBC ruined this show, it probably won't even get past the pilot ep.

The scene in which kitt was hospitialized had the coolest score on the show.

Did anyone notice that in the new series you can see the scrapped parts from K.I.T.T's old body besides the steering wheel? VERY SAD INDEED. This new Knight Rider just doesn't cut it for me.

The new show is horrible, a 2 hour long Mustang commercial in itself, and then there's the damn Ford Focus commercials with the actor guy. Even a 7 year old 2001 Firebird would've made a better looking KITT. NBC ruined this show, it probably won't even get past the pilot ep.

After watching that pile of garbage last night on NBC called the new Knight Rider, I needed to watch this video. There is, and only will be one KITT!! Many of my favorite scenes too. Awesome video!
