lets be honest... I live in America, where most of the Big Name singers go to get famous and well Kpop won't be making it into American Music for a long time... I wouldn't say any Kpop groups or Idols of this time will be a house hold name in America. Kpop fans have ALONG time to wait for that, we are talking many many years.
I'm a big fan of SNSD but I agree with Simon and Martina, the only ones who I see doing great in America are 2NE1 and Bigbang they all have a very nice personalities and their style just click with us here so yeah I prefer sneakers over heels hahah go 2NE1 :D
I'm from NYC and I'll have to say I agree with Simon and Martina. I wen't to 2NE1 MTV Iggy concert and the fans loved EVERY aspect of the girls: style, hair, personality, music, edge, etc. I also went to SNSD fan sign even (for The Boys album) and there were fans there who didn't even know all their names they just like that "there are 9 hot girls" and "their music is cute" but with SNSD unless you're an ULTIMATE fan to know them individually their "stage uniforms" and "cute act" don't cut it!
I say let Americans music companies and artist come to them. In the meantime keep building success across the world, that to me should be most important.
2NE1 and BIGBANG i personally feel have the attitude to be able to make it in America. You need to be tough and i think they're a lot tougher compared to the other K-Pop idols, I'm not saying anything bad about the rest of k-pop idols i love them all, but America is a very tough place with a lot of attitude and if you want to compete with American artist you need to have just as much attitude.
I showed some people the Kelly and the tonight show and they loved the dance but they said the song made no sense and if you only heard the song they would never bother with who they were. big bang already films mv in the us and have american female models in their videos. their party/laid back vibe would be more likely to become popular in the US vs someone like say...MBLAQ who is more pop sounding. YG also has a better habit of making sure their artists have a better grasp at English. As for 2NE1, I'm not sure. Even BoA released an album here, and I'm not too sure it was much of a hit. I've never seen her vids anywhere, whereas I've seen Utada (Japanese I know) played a lot.

I think other groups can make it but they will have to change whereas 2ne1 and big bang don't have to change. I also think cube entertainment could make it.

I agree to a certain point. As much as I love 2NE1, they have a lot of work to do to learn how to entertain here. They seldom sing at the same time. Taking turns on the mic is not kosher. We're used to groups singing in harmony. Lip syncing is okay sometimes, but they seem dependent on them. (I know... cultural standard.) Dancing is great in videos, but ya gotta bring it every single time in live shows. Can't go through the motions. We tend to scrutinize, so please work to bring that up! I <3 U!

@Randomskee during THAT particular time they said BIGBANG and 2NE1 are the only ones THEY themselves THINK can transition into US market. Simon and Martina clearly emphasised that as well. They certainly didn't mean that no other group would make it, just at that particular moment. They might have changed their perceptions the next day for all we know.

I love SNSD but in the US, people favor the extremes of two ends. I feel like SNSD is going for the "sexy" type of appeal and to the North American standards they are not quite sexy enough. They're cute, but in the US, that doesn't really stand out enough. sorry, that's just the truth. they're pretty though ;)
SNSD shows a lot of personality thought interviews/shows more than they do on stage. Vice-versa 2ne1 show personality on stage but lack it in interviews/talkshows.
There is quite a bit of truth to what Simon and Martina have said. But I believe SNSD only APPEAR to have not much personality due to the large number of girls and highly choreographed dance numbers...not to mention they have about 4-5 minutes on stage. There's not much individual time the members can use to connect with their audience when they are performing, seeming they only get 3-4 lines of lyrics each.
@JimiKpop Thats why I believe they make a lot of talk show and game show appearances, to prove they have interesting and fun personalities. Singing wise I think only some have STRONG stand out voices, then there are 1 or 2 girls who can hold a nice note and carry themselves through the song based on the right lyrics for their vocal style. Personally I've never really been into SNSD as a group (just because its not really my STYLE of music, I'm a BlackJack).
@JimiKpop BUT I HAVE to admit....I am seriously a HUGE fan of TaeYeon! as an individual....her voice is seriously AMAZING!!! I LOVE LOVE LOVE listening to her solo performances. Her and Tiffany stand out from the group to me. But like Simon and Martina said, its easier to connect with 2NE1 because there is only 4 of these talented and charismatic girls. Their style is edgy and highly energetic (Not saying SNSD isnt...just saying 2NE1 create the same impact with a smaller group).

When SNSD performed live on the kelly show....I wasnt as impressed due to the fact that there were so many of them and that Americans are more about personality/sex appeal when it comes to artist (espically in a world where hip hop is more favorable). At least 5 are exceptional singers (it's a performance group and I'm not going to hide the fact that not all of them are strong singers) and they exude charisma, sexiness and confidence as individuals and as a unit. That being said, I look forward to their US venture with trepidation because their music is different and 9 women sharing a stage doesn't allow their full personality to show through.
@dcrissa In contrast, YG tend to exude a sort of attitude and charisma that doesn't invite the usual initial mockery (i.e. Ring Ding Dong (Shinee's other songs are pretty awesome though)). YG music also matches the current trends in the US and they're talented to boot with the ability to compose, produce and write.
@dcrissa First off, I completely agree with your comment in regards to the emphasis on appearance in South Korea. I'm also a huge fan of 2NE1 and BigBang especially. To be honest the current Kpop culture tends to be heavily influenced with cuteness, pretty boys, peculiar concepts and even more peculiar fashion. Alot of Kpop groups take a while to get used to if you haven't been exposed to the genre at all.

I love SNSD but in the US, people favor the extremes of two ends. I feel like SNSD is going for the "sexy" type of appeal and to the North American standards they are not quite sexy enough. There is quite a bit of truth to what Simon and Martina have said. But I believe SNSD only APPEAR to have not much personality due to the large number of girls and highly choreographed dance numbers...not to mention they have about 4-5 minutes on stage. There's not much individual time the members can use to connect with their audience when they are performing, seeming they only get 3-4 lines of lyrics each.

@JimiKpop Thats why I believe they make a lot of talk show and game show appearances, to prove they have interesting and fun personalities. Singing wise I think only some have STRONG stand out voices, then there are 1 or 2 girls who can hold a nice note and carry themselves through the song based on the right lyrics for their vocal style. Personally I've never really been into SNSD as a group (just because its not really my STYLE of music, I'm a BlackJack).

@JimiKpop BUT I HAVE to admit....I am seriously a HUGE fan of TaeYeon! as an individual....her voice is seriously AMAZING!!! I LOVE LOVE LOVE listening to her solo performances. Her and Tiffany stand out from the group to me. But like Simon and Martina said, its easier to connect with 2NE1 because there is only 4 of these talented and charismatic girls. Their style is edgy and highly energetic (Not saying SNSD isnt...just saying 2NE1 create the same impact with a smaller group).

When SNSD performed live on the kelly show....I wasnt as impressed due to the fact that there were so many of them and that Americans are more about personality/sex appeal when it comes to artist (espically in a world where hip hop is more favorable). The thing that baffles me the most about Kpop culture is the constant and often baseless bashing of other groups (although I'm all for constructive criticism). @dcrissa I would however like to disagree on your last comment on SNSD. At least 5 are exceptional singers (it's a performance group and I'm not going to hide the fact that not all of them are strong singers) and they exude charisma, sexiness and confidence as individuals and as a unit. That being said, I look forward to their US venture with trepidation because their music is different and 9 women sharing a stage doesn't allow their full personality to show through.

@dcrissa In contrast, YG tend to exude a sort of attitude and charisma that doesn't invite the usual initial mockery (i.e. Ring Ding Dong (Shinee's other songs are pretty awesome though)). YG music also matches the current trends in the US and they're talented to boot with the ability to compose, produce and write.

@dcrissa First off, I completely agree with your comment in regards to the emphasis on appearance in South Korea. I'm also a huge fan of 2NE1 and BigBang especially. To be honest the current Kpop culture tends to be heavily influenced with cuteness, pretty boys, peculiar concepts and even more peculiar fashion. Alot of Kpop groups take a while to get used to if you haven't been exposed to the genre at all.
