Yes it is a great train, My wife and I travelled Adelaide to Darwin 2005, and have alos done the Indian Pacific Perth to Sydney in 2000, what a way to see Australia, Hope to do one of them again someday.
@soshmed1943 Its a shortening of the word Afghan. Camels were used to open up some of the outback where this train runs and Afghani camel drivers came to Australia to start the ball rolling. The Ghan locos have a camel depicted on the sides.
Now that's what I call a train. It's HUGE! And, yes, it is luxury. I rode it Adelaide to Alice Springs years ago. Well worth it, especially as it now goes through to Darwin.
