Know what I just realized? The smoke (from their cigarettes) makes all the pictures look like they're on the verge of being burned by fire. It's just like Don Draper's family life; all about to go up in flames.
Wow what a great show and I still can't figure out why I like it so much. One of my favorite characters was Sal. They didn't have to play up the homosexuality so much as I didn't think that was necessary. The guy is just cool and so is Draper and Roger.
*spoiler* does anybody think this scene would have been that much more powerful if he'd had shown pictures of his childhood? the ones his brother adam sent him?
I remember when this episode aired. The way Crane acknowledges the closing of Don's setup after he says "sweetheart" is perfectly done. I knew shit was about to get real.

A sad piece of music, photos of family and marriage and calm voice that explains the hole idea behind the spectacle = sentimentality that most of the people love and enjoy. Go figure!
@aramdosuzman It's an advertising pitch to Kodak executives for their new slide projector. Kodak wants to call it "the Wheel." Don sells them on calling it "the Carousel." Needless to say, the Kodak guys call off all their other later meetings and go with this idea. But the scene is also about a lot of dramatic things happening in Don's life and in Crane's life (the guy who runs out of the room). Don's an artist who happens to work in the corporate world. It's a beautiful moment from the show.
Everything about this scene is beautiful. From Don's immaculate suit; subtle yet demanding, powerful without showing of force. The the images of his family, especially of Betty. You wonder whether or not he really does love her, what he really feels about her, yet you can hardly see it in his face. Even the smoke adds a kind of ambiance, almost dreamlike.
@Ttran778 Don does love, but he's forced to live and operate in a cutthroat corporate world. It's a big source of all of his problems and failings. He loves Betty and his family, he loves Anna and Peggy like a brother. This is a scene where we see that side of him. The tension between both sides, who he is vs. who he has to be or who he thinks he has to be is profound.
Maybe it's just me but is TV the new cinema? There is more quality in the writing, acting and filming of this 3 min scene than I saw in the whole of Hollywoods output from last year.
@essxm22 Most of the best writers are now working in TV. TV writers can have more power and control over a show than a film writer has over a movie. It's a writers medium, like theater. DVD and digital download have allowed long-form stories to thrive in the marketplace. We can watch a whole season over the course of a week, like reading a good book. Mad Men, The Wire, Deadwood, etc. are all only possible now because of how the new means of distribution allows for longer form storytelling.
"What you feel, what you love, what you desire. These things we tell each other every day. We wear them... like ribbons on our sleeves. We know what we want, because we want it, and we want you to know, so you can give it to us. That's what an ad is. That's what we do here."
@MartoEmeraldHonor Heh. They didn't even take their next meeting. We find out later they called from the lobby, cancelled their other meetings and went with Carousel.

@Ttran778 2:41, he looks he does. Later, he looks the love is confirmed. Either way, this scene is truly an artistic masterpiece.
