awesome work!!! These dogs are bred to work hard and play hard. he is doing what comes natural..one single ACD can take on a full size bull. now thats POWER!!
no this comment can stay. just wanted to say hes not worked like this usually at all. i just wanted to get all he knew on video. hes lucky if he gets worked once a week with disc, considering i work alot (6 days).just because he knows alot, doesnt mean he does it everyday. i would also like to ask exactly what is considered " a workload" to you. the fact that he did 2 little flips? the fact that hes running? elaborate please.how much is too much to you guys?
It's not the 2 little flips, it's the constant running, the hopping, the quick starts and stops, the requirement of attention for however many minutes in a row. That's hard on dogs.
That hopping behavior is hard on dogs. It's a pogo stick landing over and over. You would never dream of letting those small flips land like that and yet in the first hopping sequence he did it 15 times not to mention the times he did it with the staggered, right left foot placement.
ps, some of these "pogo stick" shots are double, with the cheesy "effect" i put in with the program i used. and ruiz pants. alot. he runs. alot. not just playing frisbee but him and freak will play and play and he pants like that. long toungue, yadda yadda. hes a dog. so, when he stops panting, i should put him away right away?
when he is tired, or if im doing too much, he goes to get a drink and then he goes inside. not like im forcing him to do anything he doesnt want to do. so your main issue is hopping?
You own border collies, you know that they'll work 'til they croak. It is our responsibility to keep them safe. Just like it was your parent's responsibility to keep you more than 6" from the TV. Of course you wanted to do it, and they weren't making you, but they knew better.
ive had ruiz since he was 8 weeks. hes been walking/hopping since he was 7 months old. hes stretched before he plays and walked after he plays, then given water. hes never had a problem, and yes, he hops a shitload. some border collies will work till they croak, not all. when dyna is done, she lays down. thats about a good 5 min. of park play. and if 5 mins is a long time to be playing with my dog, then shit...what do you say when
i play with my dogs at the park for up to 2 hours at a time when i get home from work. they run, chase and cut all corners of the park. theyre fine. theyre just being dogs. how the hell do you keep all your dogs from running jumping playing and being REAL dogs?
if he can do it at the park, running with my other dogs, there isnt any realistic reason he cant do it while playing with other toys in the yard. so yea, ruiz has yet to work himself to death to the point where hes dying, cant get up, is suffering from heat exhaustion and has to be rushed from the vet. like dyna and freak...hes fine.
im telling you, i show him a few times what i want and he asks no questions, just does it. i have to be on his butt about distance work though lol. other than that, i totally agree with you. heelers ARE the smartest dogs ive ever trained. i see more heelers in my future, but thats years down the road. 4 dogs is enough for now :). ps, your dogs are AMAZING!
The awbrey/sit up is awesome! And I might add... Ruiz has one sexy ass! He shakes it better than J-Lo! I almost fell off the chair laughing the first time he ran backwards between your legs- he really was shaking that butt!
Dude, ur dog is awesome, and dude, ur back yard is pretty huge. Like to see a yard like that here in san diego!!! Mine is smalllll I can barely set up 6-7 agility obstacles in mine
god, my yard is SMALL. really it looks big? i can only set up about 5 jumps decenlty spaced to work with. and that red thing ruiz ran into in the corner of the yard is our ghetto tunnel, which moves from corner to corner of the yard when i need it too. so 5 jumps and a 6 foot tunnel fit comfortabley in my yard. ugh. but it works for teaching the basics. thanx for the comment stacy :)
Ok, the battle of the backyards now! LOL. I have my own place, but my yard is a good 20 feet from the house wall to the fence. It is however a bit long (think of a very narrow rectangle 20 feet for width, and about 100 feet for length). I'm lucky to set up my A frame, jump and tire lengthwize, and then have a 180 turn for a jump, jump, and then teeter on the second side nearest to the fence lol.
hey!!! that's my dog's brother...... we always look forward to see what Ruiz is going to do next... We look forward to the unicycle.....

That's a whole lot of work for a 10 month old dog. 4:31 of moving video footage? How much was left on the cutting room floor?
Cattle dog or not, this dog won't play for long with this kind of workload.
We're supposed to learn from our mistakes.
I'll understand if you don't want to let this comment be published, but someone's got to tell you and all your viewers how much is too much.

At 55 seconds of the video, Ruiz was toast. Look at his tongue. Look at his rate of breathing.
13 more pogo stick landings then he's even more toast at 2:11.
Then there are 39 more pogo stick landings to finish.
It's just too much.
Look at his tongue throughout the video. He's too young to be working through that kind of fatigue.

I didn't count the ones that were video replays.
You're right, he's a dog, he's not a Frisbee machine, regardless of how much he works like one.
Apryl's outside playing disc with her 14 year old BC. Think about that... 14 years... that's a long time.
