Pple who break wrx trannies are the ones who power shift, launch incorrectly, and just rape the poor car its not neccessarily subaru its the past owners of the car
So the general consensus is that 02-03's have garbage transmissions, are the other years OK? The WRX is in my list of possibilities for my next car, just seeing what years to stay away from
flooring the pedal and dropping the clutch is not good on any car it just kills the clutch and burns time, best to load at 2000rpm then drop the clutch and floor it
yeah i bought a 02 wagon 3 years ago and month after i got the car i lost first and second apparently the guy that had it before raped on it quite a bit i put a used tranny in it so far so good but if this one blows im saving up for a six speed
Enough with the STI six speed upgrade comments ANY awd car "BEATEN" enough will eventually have issues look at the GTR tranny problems. Its simple physics REDLINE awd launches overtime, something will break.
Has Subaru ever fixed the brittle gears of the WRX transaxle yet ? My transaxle in my '06 WRX that I purchased new in Dallas broke TWICE in less than 18K miles and one year old before I traded it for another make of performance car, and I am on my third new car(BMW 3series coupe)since then. Subaru would not cover it under warranty($6K cost), so they lost a customer for life, or at least several new car purchases.
glass tranny, I launch my 09 2.5i a lot, no problems hahaha. I'm going to test drive an 02 wrx today, 91k miles dealer wants 10k I wanna talk em down to 8, sell my 09 and rock the bugeye. I won't ever launch it and take it easy till I drop a shep built tranny.
@dirtyimprezadotcom I have PPG Straight cuts and even PPG themselves say it is insanely stupid to clutch dumb an AWD car. Because something will ALWAYS break. The weakest part of the drivetrain will fail and then you are screwed. While the straight cuts are made to handle it it's still not good for them at all.
a clutch dump in anything is stupid, at least load up the box and diff/s before you drop it all the way...clutches that have been slipped are still less expensive than drivelines...
@02WRXsuby Dude i got Japan version version 4 rally spec gears for 500 bucks just shop arround just gears mabe new forks if you need em but if you dont need em and the ones you have are good use em you can still stack up to about 450 hp before you have any problems again. Look every where took me 2 days to find 2 sets of version 4 gears and i rebuilt both of my trannys. already spanked to GSXR 600's with out launching it if you gotta launch you can drive.
Trust me, this is the worst noise to ever come out of a car. Kaboom! rattle rattle rattle. I shattered my 02 wrx tranny driving normal with no mods. Grandmas break these trannys. It's just one of those things. I swapped for a Cryo STi RA gear set w/ new synchros and redline shockproof fluid. 600hp and 3 years later it still works like a charm.
and this is why you don't drop the clutch on an awd. granted it is a bugeye and they had the worst tranny of all the wrx's, this can happen to any awd if you don't launch it right.
Not sayin that this is your car but, whoever let their friend drive the car is a retard. I trust my friends a lot but, not enough to let them drive my car. I don't let ANYONE drive my car. Because I know in the end that I'm the only one that I can rely on to pay for it. And the 02 and 03 trannies aren't THAT bad, people just don't know how to treat a car. Don't dump the clutch or powershift and it'll last a long time.
I am pretty sure anything over 03s can handle some beating. I never had problems with my 02, but i never dumped the clutch. you have to ease the clutch out. Plus having a little higher tire pressure will spin the tires, taking some stress off of the tranny.
@coble18t i am on my 3rd tranny in my 07. if you dont know the 06-07 model has the ej255 not the ej20. 02-05 have a weak 1st-3rd. then in 06-07 they beefed up 1st-2nd but left 3rd alone and gave it a bigger motor. i only have a tbe and supporting open source tune. im around 320-330chp. 3rd broke twice on me. buy ppg gears or kaaz depends on your pocket book and your application. the tranny i want for my car is about $10,000. albin is also a good co.straight cuts,helical cuts,synchroed,dogbox...
I have launch control and have it set at 4 grand and I lean out of the clutch not dumping it. If you dump the clutch even in an STI you are a dumb ass. It's an AWD car think about how much gearing and equipment that you are moving dumping the clutch is ALWAYS a bad idea in a subaru. If you want to see the way to launch a WRX check out my 03 WRX acceleration after mods. I just lean out of the clutch and 0-35 is gone in a FLASH. Just look and see.
AWD and grippy tires not enough to let out that energy. You have to have ALOT of hp like 600+hp. I work on subaru's for a hobby and I am always getting them in with gears and the trannys fried from guys doing clutch dumps. You can dump out the clutch but it is at your own risk.
You're so wrong when u say that WRX trannies can take a beating. WRX trannys are not for launching from a dig, thats why they call WRX transmissions glass trannies.
That day sucked, I told him to just take it down and not race it. To just drive it. The car was detoation and was getting shitty times, like 14.1 and 13.9. The car is capeable with that set up of 13.4-13.2. Any way, new first gear and a bad memory. Thanks for all the help and support Cobble!
what was his set up? i ran 13.4 with just a TBE, U/P, and ACT clutch, with the boost turned up and race gas on my factry turbo 02 wrx. I never really worried about the tranny. Never made that much power. I hope he did not break with only a few things done to it, i would be pissed...

i broke my jdm sti ra 5 speed, it was cryo'ed and micro polished. at the time it broke i had over 315whp, but i wasn't launching it when it broke i was shifting from 1st to 2nd at 5k rpms. my red line is set at 7400rpms and i wasn't full throttled. so even the strongest tranny in the 5 speed from subaru breaks, they just make shit gears
@superblack350z If you have no idea what you're talking about, shut your mouth. 03's got a different gear set. That EXACT same gearset is still being used in every 5 speed Subaru has put out of the factory. The 02 gears are more narrow, yes. Knowing how to drive helps a lot. Just because you see a bunch of people on NASIOC claiming their 02 trans broke doesn't mean it's a fault tranny. It's because some kid beats on it all the time and expects it to last.
@99STM it is always 2nd gear i have 2 wrx's 1 with 330 hp and the other with 450hp and the 2nd gear went in both. Both had new clutches and fly wheels just to much torque for that tranny or not the tranny the cheap ass gear set up subi put in the car. So now i am running PPG strait cut Version 4 japan2000 STI model 5sp gears and they are bad ass.

At 95.000km I changed my 04 wrx engine for a jdm sti ver.8, 5mt still in there rocking hard with over 30.000km now... and a stage 2 clutch!!!

yeah it is. People think you can just do redline rpm drops on it just because it has AWD. Messing up the transfer case as well.

@coble18t Exactly. The 02's DO have weaker gears, but in 2003 Subaru started using a wider gearset.
