It's funny: I just discovered XWP and when I first saw this scene, I actually remarked out loud to myself how beautiful it was. The final moment of the two of them gazing at the camera was magnificent.
But, do you know the comments from Lucy and Renee bout that? That's so cool. Some years later they would never get this scene, cos they would laugh so much. And they wondered why Xena bring Hercules in this sentence... LOL
Yes it was, and also (which Xena fans, including the character Xena herself after season 1 seems to forget) the reason why she mentioned Hercules is because HE (NOT Gabrielle) was the one who originally pointed her down the path to redemption. Also she loved Hercules as much as she'll love Gabrielle (if you catch my drift) in the following seasons after season 1.

Sad scene but it showed that Xena cared about what she did to Callisto and the rest of her past mistakes.

wasn't the "Prometheus" episode not long before this episode? I'm guessing that's why she mentioned Hercules?
