i just quit smoking 2 weeks ago and im glad of it though occasionally the temptation to smoke always tries to get me started again. but anytime the temptation does come i go to anti-smoking ads like these and the temptation goes away.
Upon receiving a diagnosis of lung cancer, Jim threw his last pack of cigarettes away and never bought another pack. The next day, he asked about making this commercial. Granted, he brought his death on himself, but he was truly a wonderful soul for doing this.
prior to this PSA, Jim was diagnosed with Lung Cancer. he also reportedly threw away his cigs and quit smoking. it may have been too late, but he still had hope.
@359lillian Dude telling Jim Varney not to smoke after making a PSA is like telling Paul Ruebens not to play a drug dealer after doing an Anti Crack commercial. Sure its hypocritical and stuff like that, but the fact of the matter is while he made a choice that probably killed him, it was his choice. If anything this commercial was basically him telling us "Don't make the same mistake I did."
I love ernest but its so weird i know personally and know of people who smoked many decades but live to be a ripe old age. Maybe he had something in his DNA that he couldnt handle that and it had its way with him. Who really knows maybe he had a problem and cigarettes aggravated it. RIP Ernest, im sure hes cracking kids up in heaven!
@buttlord123 No, not really. Jim Varney was a heavy smoker. He made this after he was diagnosed with lung cancer. So not ironic but, uhm... planned I guess?
I just found out a couple of days ago that Jim Varney started smoking when he was just 15 years old in 1964. He only smoked for about 34 years before it killed him. It's such a shame to sell children those things. It's a shame to even start a bad habit like that. My grandfather started smoking at 12. He's 77 and still smoking. I guess everyone is affected differently.
I used to smoke quite a bit for 9 years. I was somewhat of a heavy drinker as well. Not necessarily for the alcohol but because it made it easier not to feel...anything. Thank God I had long quit those terrible habits. I've been free of this stuff for over 6 years now. I wish Jim had listened to this ad and quit smoking. This should be scary enough to help all those out there still puffing away on a cigarette.
@ChickenHawkKicker I was thinking the exact same thing. Here's a guy in an Anti- smokeing commercial and he died from lung cancer because he was a smoker.
Eerie. He didn't want Vern to die of lung cancer from smoking and Jim was the one really smoking and then died of lung cancer. Well, I cared about Jim Varney and I didn't want him to smoke either. 3 packs a day is hard to fathom. I hate those nasty murdering cancer sticks!!!
Seriously the first time I saw this I bought this DVD from walmart which had all his old stuff like this and at the time I was a stoner and My bro and I couldnt stop laughing so if you smoke watch these commercials and be ready to laugh your ass off
It is irony indeed. But now the message means a TONS more effective, the groundhogs are bringing him his mail. It is exactly true what he said. Just it was with himself.
Well people it can be overcome...I used to be addicted heavily to dip, chew, etc.-and had tried several times to quit, with no success. However, I finally mustered up enough willpower to "kick the can", when I was determined, flat-out, that the "weed" (tobacco) wasn't something I wanted to have kill me. I know it's addictive, but if I can quit anyone can. Varney just didn't want to badly enough. Sad he died from its effects, but his PSA would've been better received had he followed his advice.
