Dude! Frollo never had a chance man. Gypsy chicks dig dudes what pour boiling wax on peeps. She runs out of the cathedral screaming, yeah right...you could see that she wanted the Quaz man, she was just playing hard to get. They left the footage where he rings her bell on the cutting room floor, too racy for '39.
Poor Frollo... never gets the girl. Man, if I ever work on another film adaptation of 'Hunchback', I will insist that Frollo and Esmeralda end up together. :-D
It's sad that the same beauty that attracted the king of France long enough to (facetiously) listen to her also made it so easy for other people to condemn her as a witch.
RAH! I want to be Esmeralda! I would have totally gone for Frollo, I wanna hug him so bad!! He is really very sweet he just went crazy becuase he was love stricken-----but besides Frollo Sir Cedric is so amazing!!! He is my favorite actor, so handsome and slick :) And don't even get me started on his voice. Played the part perfectly as always.
@LolitaLexi: He does try to get away with more! Far more! In the book, he tries to rape her and in more recent versions, starting in the 70s, they show that scene. XD
This is perhaps my favorite scene in the whole movie! It truly moved me. Maureen O'Hara, being around 19 at the time, presents Esmeralda here with a beautiful innocence that shows upon her face. Sir Cedric Hardwicke is by far the best Frollo, down to the way he looks! The sharp nose, close-set eyes, and small, naturally-frowning mouth.
I love it when he takes her hands and she looks in horror, "You have the mark of the devil on your hands!" The best!
I can't stop laughing at the obviousness that he is looking down her dress !!! And then when she turns to look at him his eyes go back to her face. lol.
Damn, Frollo was actually pretty close to hooking up with Esmaralda. She was feeling him and was following him to the bell tower until Quasi popped out nd freaked her out. That cockblock. Plus she never said she hated him so hey, there was still hope for him.
@TheUga944 Actually, Esmeralda does pray in the book, in the chapter titled "The Little Shoe". Here is a summary: When she is hiding in the belltower, she hears the battle outside and she thinks that evil spirits are coming to get her or something. So, despite being a pagan, she kneels, clasps her hands and prays to the Christian God and the Virgin Mary to help her out.
im guessing this scene is the inspiration for the song "god help the outcasts" in the disney version. theis version is really interesting although its not that acurate to the book. Charles laughton is brilliant in this though. xxxx
@SakuraMayonaka I thought the same thing and while he's making his speech in his head he's saying "I want to do her sooo bad, wait...that's a boner in my pants..damn..."
@SakuraMayonaka :) True, if i was in a real life situation....:) I guess he's kinda annoyed that he never got to rape her in this version...I guess he can do somthing...to quench the fires of lust in his soul...:)
@LolitaLexi he never really got to rape her in any version, although he came close in three versions i've seen and of course in the book he almost did as well. this version is pretty subtle, but back then it would've had to have been. i mean in the first silent version frollo wasn't the bad guy, it was his brother who i forget the name of. they didn't think it was appropriate for a priest to be like that^^
@SakuraMayonaka True, giving off a bad image. The vatican wouldn't have it! Frollo isn't a bad man, he just is over taken with desire...if there was therapists back then, he would most likely go...
@LolitaLexi but when we look at the church today, its basically the same. we still see reports of priests overcome with desire and scandal within the vatican, so i don't see how the church can really say anything about that lol^^
@LolitaLexi for certain he would. religion is far less strict these days, people feel as if they can get away with more than they can. but at least today he wouldn't get away with it so easily. ^^
@SakuraMayonaka This is true! Actually, the didn't feel it was appropriate for a priest to be like that in this version either, since they changed his position in this film and since this film was the reference for Disney's, they followed suit. It is interesting, however, how time changes politics and perceptions, since decades after they reinstate the fact that he is a priest (this is especially apparent in the '97 TV movie)

Just the name is different. Claude is in the book the character of Jehan in this movie. they just change the names, and the fact that Claude is the priest, and Jehan is just an official and priest....or whatever he is

declanroxs 7 months ago
@colmhearne You are wrong.1982's Esmeralda represent perfectly the novel's one, for her character. She is dull and aloof.
This one is too religious. Esmeralda, in the novel, don't pray.Never.
Disney's and Lollobrigida's Esmeralda (1956) have a very strong character, they're minx and sarcastic
for this reason, i think the best versions of Esmeralda were played by Patsy Ruth Miller (1923) and Leslie Anne Down (1982)
TheUga944 5 months ago
