It is appearing that he is dying and is running out of times and is giving thanks to them. People who is suicide do not talk about joy and birds are singing in the sky, but rather of hopelessness and gloom. Please don't turn this beautiful song into something as horrible as suicide.

@Lizzpear Well its not really a direct translation. Jacques Brel's version is really someone who is about to "die" but he mentions a whole bunch of people will take care of his wife, and he knows because they've already been taking care of her ;).

The English version is about death. French, not quite. Also, the term death in French is very widely used in metaphors. A lot of people argue about what the song is really about in French ;). But death is not as present as in English.

Here's a little something from my life: I know this song but forgot about it, untill now.

I sang along on it, until about 1:00 when the lyrics went on about the relationship to his father. I was/am the black sheep of my family, as they're JW's and i choose to split, because of "too much wine and too much song." Those 10 seconds of the song shut me up.
