  • it a fan... it makes noise :\ Though i bet ur make less noise than my laptop, but thru the vid, i have no idea how terrible it can be?

  • I got my MacBook Pro 2 months ago and its doing that, now i gotta get it fixed

  • I've just got my Macbook Pro back from Apple. My problem was only with Right Fan buzzing like a demented wasp when it got too warm. They replaced it in a day.

I was very lucky though as it went wonky with just one week of my 3 year Apple Care plan remaining. It would have cost £55 to fix if it happened next week.

  • if it is under apple warranty it will only cost hundreds to fix. your lucky

  • My PS3 slim has a noise like that, I don't find it a problem.

  • Yeah. Cheap fans. I posted elsewhere, but use Radio Shack Tuner Cleaner and Lubricant. Part # 64-4315.

Just a tiny spray. Use a can of compressed air or something to make the fan spin a few times, then another tiny spray.

This stuff is non conductive and safe for the logic board etc, some WILL spray around when its first running... so use what I described. Its designed for crossfades, volume knobs etc... Do NOT, repeat do NOT use wd40 or oil or anything like that.

    2 months+ silent.

  • @tmemkerobbie : Where do we spray this and do we open the case? If so, how?

  • @CommentsSurvey Yes, you would open the case and spray the tuner cleaner inside of the center of the fan assembly. Theres a small crack separating the fan from the hub, spray a quick shot (dont overdo it) all up in there and spin it gently by hand a few times. Do not overspray, and do not bend the fan or it will never spin right again.

  • @tmemkerobbie : thank you for your quick response! What is "tuner cleaner?"

  • @tmemkerobbie : LOL; no, I'm not a "computer nerd" and actually I am scared to open up the case... a chicken Y(&(^^T when it comes to hardware repairs! I'm great with software, but the innards I know nothing about.

I think ordering replacement fans would be best. Are they difficult to install? Where do I get them? I'm sure Apple will be too expensive for me to go to...

  • @CommentsSurvey google for "macbook pro replacement fans" - odds are good that the first two sponsored, and non-sponsored, links are powerbookmedic and ifixit. You can let them know your exact model and they'll help you get the right fan and likely even provide instructions. I have bought fans, screens, and iphone tools happily from both companies -- cant recommend one or the other for this exact issue though. PS: tuner cleaner is a lubricant/cleaner for things like volume knobs

  • @tmemkerobbie : Thanks again for your quick response; going to check out the parts places you mention. And thanks for the explanation of "tuner cleaner." I'm learning more every day!

  • I got the same problem, what a piece of shit.

  • I bought a 13" MBP as soon as they came out (a couple months ago), and it just started with this nonsense. At first it wasn't very loud, but today it's horrendous. I'm taking it to the genius bar this evening... Hopefully it will get sorted quickly.

  • Thank goodness for Youtube man. I JUST started having this issue-- looks like a trip to the genius bar is where I'm headed too. Did they replace your fan?

  • i got a 15'pro in june 09

and it started making that sound not to long ago

it sounds like a piece of paper in the fan or something?

any ideas on how to fix it?

  • same problem with a powerbook G4.. the only simple trick I found and it works ( is NOT hitting the comp with your fist ..) but put an external fan close to the comp.. to help cool it down. I think it's a major defect for a comp this price. it does that only when you use it a looong time .. but it's supposed to be used a looong time, so just before buying coolers and stuff.. try the genuine fan .. and be patient. :)

  • Mine Macbook Pro is doing the same thing I bought mine in July 2008. I hope they recall it.

  • i payed 3000 dollars for my computer and iTS FUCKING PISSING ME OFF DOING THE SAME BULSHIT!!

  • My unibody MacBook 2.4GHz is doing the same thing!

It's still on Warranty and I have AppleCare, I just can't afford to be without a laptop right now; academic necessity.

  • I'm suffering through as I type with my Macbook :'( its been going on for months now, Did you find a solution???

  • is always a saloution to the problem

  • fan blades are rubbing against heat sink

  • i bought both fans off ebay for 90 bucks and replaced them both in 30 minutes. Works great again.... you guys just think these things are suppposed to last forever cause they have funny commercials

  • AppleCare Protection Plan. Worth it.

  • I tell you what I haven't seen a macbook air do this lol but I think that firmware updates will help it :) 

  • Firmware updates fix the fans' behaviors.

  • lol this is not a fan behavior... sorry for all u mac users thinking every thing that comes out of the box is the best build computer. Apple uses cheep shity parts. This Fan has little oil or lube.

  • wrong. because of the douche bags over at Nvidia, an update required fans to run harder becasue of the crappy video cards.

  • Nvida has nothing to do with it dude..... ur stupid. The motors they use are really crap.... Im useing a Macbook with a intel onboard.. the fan was always on...and at 3,000RPM or more.. dosent matter if it was a nvidia,ATI,Intel. Fans break down..regardless of what speed they run at.

  • rethinking the Mac

  • Mine used to do that too. It started with a "Moo" sound like a cow. It's your main board and the fan.

  • i have it too

  • im on a macbook right now, i cant hear yours becuase mine is whining so freaking loud..not sure what to do..its just whining not clunking..sounds like im on a 737 flight to toronto

  • That is the sound of a failing sleeve bearing fan. Amazing that on such a high-profile and high cost machine, Apple would not spec a set of true ball-bearing fans. So the ODM went with lowest cost which is sleeve. That's why they fail prematurely. Extreme heat + horizontally mounted sleeve bearing fan = very short lifespan.

  • ahhh, lol running off of diesel... at least that's what fans sounds like, my 15" does that, but my other 5 MBPs are perfect

  • take off the plastic film seal on the front vent bettween the sreen and the keyboard

  • yes, this happens to mine too. i sent it in, and i was going to be covered, but i had a SMALL dent on the right dvi port, and they wouldnt fix the dammage.

  • this model its the first to run on intel and it's core...core cooling system is by fan, but the core 2 is way mauch better than core cos it cool by air conditioner. it'll never heat up....

  • really.? whered you get that from?

  • Can you return it and get the new model?

  • Mine made that noise for a while, then it stopped. Now it just overheats all the time.. weeeee... worst apple hardware i've ever owned.

  • Atfirst, the weird is the fan fucking up. Then you said it stopped because the fan fucked up.
