i saw that the GrandCanyonRR 50th anniversary this year in 2009 and if your 50th birthday is this year also, you get a free ride the week before or after your birthday on this fine RR line
Also to note..they purchased another steam locomotive to restore for show. It will be operational and they hope too operate them for polar express operations and maybe some special steam runs.
Where did you hear this, and was it the Shay? Also why would they spend money on restoring a different one, when the two they have are in great condition
Why would the new operators stop one of the best steam programs in the country with the best shops, because they are idiots. The layed off all shop personnel and are going to contract diesel maintenance to other company's or just let them work to death. The company needs to die or not run a railroad!
Then give them the money to run the steam engines...and breathe in every touch of smoke given off. I love steam I talked to the company though. They would run them if twice as many people went on the RR and they could afford it.
They had the money, they had pleny of money at least before the railroad changed hands. They just take all the money and put it in there pockets and leave very little for anything else, and steam and any car or locomotive staff don't fit. I think 255,000 is enough for steam service, wait that was before they cut off steam.
Its actually 230,000. And they never had the money. Why do you think it was sold...the other people couldnt afford it, and the only way to survive was to rid of steam. They dont pocket the money. Thats such an ignorant response. I love steam and hate to see it go its just that everyone needs to understand. If you would like I could message you a response from an email to a Xanterra employee. Im not trying to be an asshole to you I just want you to feel ok about it.
So I'm guess 230,000 ridership at $70 for Coach Class, and that's the cheapest here's the amount $16,100,000. No, I don't think that's enough to keep steam going, the Cumbres and Toltec is going and they only made $3 million and they are afloat, with a little outside help that probably only est $1 or 2 million a year
Hi. that video is awesome. I am a high school video production and film teacher in Gilbert, AZ and I would love to get a copy of this original footage if you have it. My students are producing a western film and they need a shot of a steam train. Let me know if you might be able to help.
Yes, the fools are busily ruining The Grand Canyon Railway, the Steamies are rotting in the sun, as are the classic Pullman coaches, both are no longer in use. Eventually the demise of the entire place will happen.
Good to see there are others of the same opinion. Me and a couple others have started a petition to bring back the steam. The railway employees agree, if there is enough public outcry, we may see these historic beasts ride the rails once again.
I don't know what all the fuss was about in some of these postings, but I wanted to tell you that I thought you did a very good job filming this train. I liked how you zoomed in but then zoomed out at the right time to capture the train going by without making the viewer dizzy. So whatever all the rude comments are about, I would just ignore those and go on the premise that you did a great job filming. We watch this one all the time, my son loves it!
Sure would like to see 10 blue cutting flames all over these things. Rivulets of melted iron and red berries of steel spraying off the sides as these get cut up!
1st cut the driving linkage apart, then cut off the steam chests. Use a front loader to roll the boiler off the carriage.
Cut off the engineers cab, then cut off the pilot. Then deliver the coup de gras to the axles.
Load it all into a 3 high side steel gondolas and drag the entire mess to the smelter!
You know too much about steam locomotives to be a hater. I was angry too about the demise of steam on the GC, but c'mon man, it's OK. We always hurt those we love, but loving steam is like loving a terminal caner patient.
These things pollute so badly, it is time for them to go forever. Cutting them up is a sure way to ensure they won't be coming back.
When I go to see these things, I carry a box of table salt with me. When I can, I sprinkle the salt on the machine. Once the reaction sets up, it won't be very many years!
All gone! Choo-choo all ate up!
Goodbye forever steam locomotives!
Cutting them up is more fun and quicker! Into the blast furnaces!
No problem at all! If steam locomotives are so good for tourists, then where are enough tourists come with their money so the company can afford to operate them?
I have a new pair of coveralls, set of gloves, goggles, steel toed boots, oxygen-acytelene bottles, hoses, a cutting torch with a new cutting tip. I am ready to cut them up and load their old relicy carcass into the scrap iron car.
At the end of the day, one will be heading for the smelter! Goodbye steam locomotives! Forever!
Again, you hate, but I suggest you're just bitter and hurt over losing your friends 4960 and 29. Don't beat yourself up. Steam will never die. You harbor some deep resentment towards steam power, as did I, for having smitten you. Help is out there, you need to find yourself again steam lover!
So much hatred could only come from a lover scorned. I can't imagine why so much energy would be spent hating what so many people find fascinating, romantic, intriguing and educational. You're clearly harboring some deep hurt and emotional issues.
a new company has bought the GC RR. As of now. THE USE OF THE STEAM ENGINES IS DISCONTINUED. The steam shop employees have allready been laid off, and the engines are to be MOTHBALLED and put on DISPLAY. Reason? Money may have some part of it. But the main reason appears to be: ENVIROMENTAL CONCERNS.
That's right the fuckin' greenies run this company
This is a lie. If they were gonna be mothballed, then why is the Grand Canyon still restoring to operating status a gormer Great Northern 2-8-2 Mikado that is larger than the 4960? Talking to railfans in that area state that no one has bought the GCRY and if it was, it would have been published by all the Railfan Magazines, Websites and industrial trade journals.
For those of us who lived and experienced the age of steam engines we have fond memories , for those who didn't it will be hard to understand our passion Rick
I'm the first one to rip on most postings in this area, but I have my license, i'm railroad employee and I must say that was a beautiful film...and brought a tear to my eye. thanks
Get an education. One volcanic eruption releases more "greenhouse gasses" than the entire industrial revolution era did. Poor greenie: well intentioned but sadly misled.
Why? Let's cut up some Peugeots and Yugos instead, EVERYBODY hates those. Let the poor steamies alone. At one time steam locomotives, numbered in the tens of thousands. Less than 200 survive for ours and future generations to appreciate and learn from. Steam is not dead! Ask any boilermaker's union member!!!!
So what if they were plentiful at one time. When the last 200 are gone it will be a beautiful day!
Future generations can learn from pictures in books and class room mock ups. Keeping this old pot metal teaches no one anything. I think cutting it down for the metal and using the metal for something else would be more educational.
I never put a dollar in the pot for "Save our steam locomotive!" preservation drives.
@Cockroach2008@Cockroach2008 Gross polluters? Well dude, you might as well post these comments on vids of volcano eruptions, since one major volcano eruption spews more green house gases an 100 years of the USA spittin fumes. If you have this kinda bad takes against steam locomotives then be an equal opportunity hater.

More junk iron for the blast furnace!
Good riddance!
Now, to cut them up and get what the metal is worth. No real estate space allocated for the display. They cost too much to store and display!
The metal can be used to make armor for our troops overseas. Or used to rebuild the infrastructure of Iraq and Afghanistan!
The date with the scrappers torch is long overdue!
Those who need to remember them, there are plenty of pictures to look at! Goodbye steam locomotives! Forever gone!
