@knikk 77 He has used both a Tube Screamer, a Butler Tube Driver and he almost always used a Fuzz Face. Check out his Rig Rundown video for the Experience Hendrix Tour on You- tube.
@knikk77 Most likely just the combination of his amp being turned up so damn loud and an early Ibanez tube screamer. I think pre TS-9 maybe. I think I read somewhere that he used one at one point in time but the Butler was the main one.

LOL....boomstick huh...hehe some one has bene watching army of darkness...god i love that movie....and the brain thing? thats a lot of matter....it is that big lol...
The first time I ever heard Eric was on Christopher Cross' album when it came out. His tone was nothing like I'd ever heard. His solo's stuck in my head for days. being a guitar player I was already well aware of Carlton, Ritenour, Skunk Baxter, and many more.I tried to find more of his stuff, but there just wasnt anything. I had to wait til Tones came out.,and then I was on a one-man campaign to tell the world about Eric Johnson!Got to see him in '89 in SF it was one one GREAT SHOW.
I am still kicking myself for not going to see Eric at the old Marquee club in London, 1990. A session musician friend who whas there said it was a whos who of the London session and performance scene - he also said that from the outset the place was in rapture. Jaws hit the deck. Eric is an angel incarnate it would seem.
I lucked out back sometime in 1991; I saw Eric Johnson open up for Satriani (my sole reason for going) at Irvine Meadows, CA. I was playing guitar for something like four years at that point, and Eric, who was unknown to me, left me in total shock.
Here was this guy playing an old Strat so amazingly; he was promoting Ah Via Musicom, which changed my life forever as a player and music lover.
n0cturnalsurfer, I was there at this show. I attended GIT in 84-85 and I didn't really know who EJ was at the time...I think I remember Steve Morse mentioning him in a GP interview and a few other players were saying how good he was, so I checked it out. This is definitely NOT sped up, he's just showin' off for all the guitar players in the audience. Haha.
Sped up? Nah. Check his open E-string with your tuner son! I grew up watching EJ play and without a doubt this performance and any recorded to date can't even touch the real fire I've seen and bootlegged, for personal use only. I've seen night where it was off the hook. Eric was a hero YEARS before "Tones". I went to see UK at Cullen Auditorium in Houston, TX and EJ opened up and killed it! Holdsworth is my fave of all time but EJ was a burning comet before the world got to know him.
You know, its one thing to be a great guitar player, but its another thing to be great and make great music. Eric johnson is both.Unfortunately, there are alot of great guitarists out there but they dont make great music. You need both.
@negadon80 I will always prefer to make great music rather than to be a great guitar player. Of course I'd prefer both, but if I'd have to chose, I'd prefer to write great music.
The court must decide if this video is rare or just medium rare. Guitar slim 56 - we must ask ourselves the question at hand. I would like to enter exhibit A. This was recorded on Beta as you can clearly see, Not vhs as you incorrectly noted. You also failed to notice the mullet like haircut from said drummer. This I would like to point out to the court is a clear indication of the rarity or lack there of of this performance archive. Corpus Christy Visu Visu.
The thing that i love about EJ is his majestic control on harmony progression of the improvisation!!This rock-fusion improvising is totally awesome!!!!EJ is THE guitarist!!!!i totally love him!!!!
this is probably the best show that i have ever seen ej play before. on his hot licks tape, he talks about voicing chords and how to link certain pentatonic scales into one another. for example if your were in E, and you would link a B pentatonic scale into the E. And on this video he really takes it to the limit and just freaking owns it! and in this jam, he probably like changes keys like 60 times lol, He takes something so difficult to do properly and makes it sound like a piece of cake!
amazing that this has been "leaked" onto the net, I go to GIT and have watched this same concert, and you get in deep shit for posting this, copyright junk...However, I'm stoked it's on here, they have an incredible archive of EVERY performance that's ever been at MI.
Yes, you are absolutely right--you can get into big trouble for duplicating copyrighted materials. But what I want to know is, why does the poster of this video describe it as "rare"? If every person on the plant has immediate access to the video, I don't think it qualifies as "rare." If the video were still locked in the GIT vaults it would indeed be rare; posted on youtube, the video is ubiquitious.
yeah, he turned his first guitar at the age of 5 and became a writer/composter at age 16. but i think on this video he's no anymore young. I think so, he was born on 1954 and i think this is on 80's.
I sure do love Eric's sound he had back then! Wow! this was three years before the release of his debut album "Tones" I love this also because you can hear certain remnants of certain songs throughout his jamming. Great post!
All you vinnie-haters need to check out his resume...
If this is over your head then fusion is NOT your thing and you need to shutup and mind your place...Cos Vinnie is working more than alot of us combined...
Anyone making stupid remarks about Vinnie...needs a serious history lesson and understanding of who the hell he is....seriously get a clue and maybe check out what he is all about before making such assinine remarks. Then after that check out some Tony Williams Lifetime...see where it came from ...honest to Pete...get a clue people.
This footage came from my VHS tape. I gave a copy to my late friend, Shawn Lane. Of all the tapes that I shared with him (and there were many) this was his ALL TIME favorite bootleg. We watched this together so many times. BTW, the "drummer that sucked" here is one of the greatest, if not the GREATEST drummers of our times: Vinnie Colaiuta.
Very cool! I went to GIT from March of 83 to March of 84; this must have been before that. To all of the critics, just take it for what it is, an unstructured jam. Enjoy the musicianship. Eric and Vinnie are world class to say the least.
That was a great jam. EJ and Vinnie really put something together nicely. And why downplay blues? Blues isn't simple. Infact, it has that emotional, soulful appeal whenever its played.
That drummer ruins the whole song, he doesn't play in complimentary style, he's just trying to overpower Eric. It's obvious they are not playing off each other, just colliding.
This is not what fusion is all about. Fusion is about music, not competing for the front spot by overplaying and playing too loud. That drummer sucked, he didn't know his place. Eric would give him room to solo, if he thought it worked for the song.
Wow! What a great performance/jam by this two masters. Reminds me a lot like those of Zappa guitar/drums interplays!! I think the great bassist Jeff Berlin was also at this clinic.
Oh, because it's MI your supposed to play with disregard to the other musicians and the music being played? and play as much and as fast and with unconcern like the drummer huh? What a fucking spastic idiot! Must of done one two many sniffers before this one.
You have the right to view things your way, but really I think it's cool that Vinnie was PUSHING Eric...you get more out of talented players when the drummer gives them something to bounce off of. That is the fundamental difference between jazz and blues...blues drummers just plod along the groove and don't react--nothing bounces off of them. That is boring too! By the way, Vinnie has proved himself to be one of the best drummers in the world...so spastic idiot is not a very aware summation.
We all know Vinnie is a great drummer, but I wouldn't say Eric is playing off him, he's competing with him and it all sounds like a bunch of nonsense. At those moments he was being a spastic idiot. (That IS being AWARE!)It's like a contest. Chops are one thing, making MUSIC is another. I suppose chops are what the audience wanted though....
You are correct about Eric not playing off of Vinnie( at times... ) As much as I love Eric's playing, he tends to riff more..many of those fast runs are his trademarks...and they rhythmically are set. Horn players are a little looser with time. Vinnie is trying to react to HIM...that is what I was referring to. And yes, blues is cool and sometimes orgasmic. It's like another dialect...with less adjectives :):)
Fusion Bliss! Thanks so much for posting this. It`s the earliest i have seen of E.J. other than the Electromagnets footage.(i think it`s Bill Maddox on drms.)Anyway, AMAZING!!!!

"...wonder what "pedal" he used for the overdrive... The Butler Tube Driver wasn't made then?"
-Back then he used an Ibanez Tube Screamer for leads. Later, he switched to the CTD.
I always thought his TS lead tone was absolutely the best he ever got, like here, and on the Austin City Limits DVD.
Everyone'stastes vary, but I wish he would go back to this lead tone. To hear it live and up close in a small club was pretty awe inspiring back then.
Peace.

That drummer needs to get his ego off the stage

It is the GIT PIT institute. He is suppose to be playing like that at this venue.

It would have been great to have been a fly on the wall in that room after
EJ's performance - he just blazed like a complete maniac with Vinnie
Coliauta on drums - awesome performance and bits of licks that later
became "EJ Canon". Incredible stuff.
