I have a question... The first few buckets of rice I sealed up with the oxygen absorber and it was still a puffy after a night of sitting, however other ones were all sealed tight. No air was escaping from it so I am stumped!
Question.. When this rice is opened 1o years down the track and the bag is opened and you start eating it, how long will the rest of the rice in the bucket last before spoiling ?
@AnnBearForFreedom - I had just purchased a flat iron for my hair came home from the store my hubs saw a video on folks using those to seal the big mylar bags he took the new one I bought and I had to go by another LOL so using flat Irons are also perfectly macho BTW they work rather good for this
I'm making a one year food store. Rice will be my main staple along with oats, tuna, beans, ect, ect.
My question is, if I were to eat one bowl of rice every day for a year (365) how mych rice should I have? (in pounds or Kilos, not cups. I need to know by weight). Anyone know?
@Ljungman42 I am not 100% sure about this but a cup of rice a day for 1 meal would be 146 pounds of rice hope this helps if you need 2 meals then that would be 292 while 3 meals would be 438.
@timw421 Awesome. I've got 288kg (635lbs) of rice so that should do for 2 people for a year. Also have enough for one bowl of rolled oats a day plus some pastas, honey, salt, sugar, and drink mix for vit C.
I've tried the "prepared.com" website and it's not working or it's a wrong site. Instead, I just type in the phone number on the bucket on google search engine and from there, I've found what I needed.
I haven't tried this yet, but when I do I'm going to seal all except about 2 inches, then use my Dirt Devil hand vac to suck out the remaining air before completing the seal. The Dirt Devil comes with a long, narrow nozzle attachment. I've done that with stuff in my bug out bag and it works great.
Extra layer yes, but also the lid is really convenient when opening and closing the bucket. Just a simple matter of choice as well as overkill and I don't mind overkill when it comes to protecting a $1,000.00 worth of rice. Know what I mean?
Cool. I guess when in use after you break the seal on the mylar it would be a good idea to keep it air tight with the lid. It would leave a lot less to worry about as you work through the rice.
Yes. Just like to think ahead when it comes to convenience. Who wants to keep popping open the lid with a crow bar every time you need to use it? Not me brother...not me.

I am always tickled that with all the prepping going on, swinging an iron has become an acceptably macho thing to do. Hee!

Once the mylar is sealed with an iron, what extra protection is provided by the gamma lid? I would be interested to find out. extra layer?
