  • 0:44.... "Mirty Friedman"!!!!??? Seriously!!???

  • marty always saw JAV in his life..so he was looking for a wife from japan to make sensation fuvk JAV idol..lmao...

    lol

  • 3:40 is definitely Marty Friedman's soloing. Nobody phrases or digs in to notes quite like he does. Petrucci is amazing, but Marty is something really special.

  • @MrMatthewLeo I think this kind of phrase is definitely the Jason Becker signature, I like Marty, but I think he's not clean enough, to me JP is a much better guitar player that can play anything he wants. But MF remains a crazy guitarist, but I really miss the Cacophony period...

  • @theslapdealers

I'm convinced they can both play anything they want, but Marty always give the most unique phrasing. Petrucci is good, but his phrasing is more akin to a robot.

  • @GrizCC Well yes, when he plays crazy unissons with Jordan Rudess or when he goes really really fast, it does sound like a robot (like all the shredders to me). But I also think that he can play with a really rare feeling, like in the Octavarium end solo, Lines in the Sand or Scarred. But I understand what you mean.

  • To me John Petrucci is more advanced in technique but, like a lot of very talented guitarists, he doesn't put his personality on the guitar. There is a difference between excellent players and guitar Icons, for example when malsmsteen take the guitar, you know immediately who is playing same thing for Ron Thal or Michael Romeo, these guys are recognizable.

To me you can make a confusion between petrucci's playing and guys like andy timmons or rick graham because they're more transparent.

  • @NAThan9871 Ha ha how dare you compare those crappy guitarist to John Petrucci? Hear "Wishful thinking" if you think he has no personality!!!! that song is so beautiful.

  • @Alejandro1313sixx I am a big fan of petrucci , a lot of things in my playin are inspired by petrucci but I don't compâre, I give an explanation on facts that made Guitar Idols, not necessary "best guistarist of the world"

  • @Alejandro1313sixx

    Agreed.

    I <3 Wishful Thinking

One of my all time faves by the man who can "play 100 billion notes per second in world domination mode" lol.

  • @Alejandro1313sixx How are any of the guitarists that he named crappy? Do you know how to play guitar?

  • @Alejandro1313sixx You must be a complete imbecile if you think Michael Romeo is a crappy guitarist. The day I see your cover of In the Dragon's Den by Symphony X that day I'll be the imbecile myself.

  • @NAThan9871 so how can you confuse Petrucci???

i mean Romeo style it's so "normal" compare to him

  • Marty needs to start writing music for all future Sonic games :D

  • Well...There Is No Doubt These Are Two Of The Greatest Guitar Gods Known To Man. :D

  • the 3:40 has also tone like petrucci

  • 0:15 "Get outta my dojo!!" lol

  • whos doin the solo from 3:40?

  • @fartvon99 i´m pretty sure it´s marty

  • @fartvon99 is Petrucci...

  • Man, I could listen to that Petrucci solo all day

Marty is my favorite guitar player of all time, but I gotta say I think the Petrucci solo is the best part of this song.

  • John Petrucci Rules.......The Best Metal guitarist ever......

  • Suspended Animation was nothing to write Mike Varney about. Dragon's Kiss is much better and far more memorable IMO.

  • I cant believe some ppl over here has nothin better to do but say shit about marty..i think he is a genius and he is fukin awesome and he is my favourite guitarist coz he touches my heart, i dont care if he is not as fast as Paul gilbert but he sure composed better music than paul..some mettalic theater talks about him as if marty has stolen his car or sth(he sure as heck sounds like he has a personal grudge against marty)..Dude wtf??!!Why talk shit abt ppl you cant even reach in your dreams??

  • Yeah his wife is Japanese actualy so is Paul Gilberts. Japanese women are stealing all Americas guitarists!

  • Its funny how people argue over whos the better guitarist- i used to that all the time before i realised that it really isnt a question about whos better, as these 2 guitarists (for example) have completely different styles that influence the way they phrase their melodies- so people need to enjoy music and not worry about whos better

  • His arabian vibrato is so distinct, I love it.

  • yep! 2:22 start JP's solo..he has a recognizable tone...and i happen to love his tone since DT's Images&Words!

  • Marty Friedman is the best guitar player ever..............

  • two best guitar players ever

  • Quick question which solo is JP's?

  • the 2:22 :s i think... sounds like him :)

  • @davydyyz Now that you mention it....

  • so marty friedman, John Petrucci, masaki and Ryuichi Nishida... all I can say is.. nice

  • their differing styles blend so well i hope they work together more

  • I know I cant believe its Pertucci was soloing it sounds just like Marty. They have fused together lol

  • quite true ^^. how come i find you on like every single marty friedman video ever though :P

  • Because I make comments

  • haha fair enough :)

  • lol im really a big fan!

  • same here :D. except ya know that jacksonke1t guy? i am kinda doing same thing as him. stealing martys style hehehe

  • Go fot it. I think jacksonke1t is great btw. I cantbelieve he gets so much shit, as if he staking a 'shorcut' or 'cheating' by using Martys technique. it so difficult to play like that mainly because you have to be 100% precise or you ring all the strings, I think he doe s a great job

And good luck to you also :0)

  • thanks and ye copying someones style is SO hard and takes ages. i have basicly got it into my system now for impro and stuff.... just got to get better overall now, but i only really did it with jacksonke1t's help any (got his msn and stuff so he has been helping me and stuff :D:D). i can't believe he has ANY shit over it :P. one thing is i don't think i am gonna steal martys wierd picking technique,,, i just am to used to normal one, but i can still play exoticly :D following chords to :o (hard

  • He thats cool ,do what feels right. not what you think you should do. Nice of jacksonke1 to help you out also.

    All the best

  • The drumming is sick. This song has some Megadeth elements to it. Great song! Friedman is the man.

  • no he quit megadeth to expand his musical horizons ie play japanese anka and pop music.

  • he quit Megadeth to get into more pop

he does a lot of J-pop and lives in Japan, speaking Japanese fluidly

  • he quit megadeth the expand his musical horizons. in an interview, he said

"megadeth's music is always gun-metal-gray. I want to explore the blues and yellows and other colors of music"

  • So? Music is so much more than metal. I believe it to be the most dominate music genre but without anything else to love besides metal, how can the genre expand itself to be dominate in the first place? I know people talk trash on genres like nu metal but it opened alot of doors in metal and fans. Hate it but people are getting into heavy metal from nu metal. And if those people hate older metal acts, its not because of their age or of the metal genre they started with, but because of ignorance.

  • what no marty is stragihter then a ruler he banged lots of girl while he was in megadeth and marty is married to his wife...

  • lol thought so

  • Haha, in fact Marty says that his main reason for moving to Japan was to get the exotic women :P.

  • @Gcwarrior123 And to eat spicy food! x)

  • haha not at all, he's in fact pretty much a woman lover- look for the video with Steve Lukather where he tells the story about having a finger up a chick's rear end :P

  • lol....what vid is that?

  • Umm he's a superstar in Japan Marty Friedman one of the greatest guitar players out there his sound is so clean. I mean this guy is friends with tons of great musicians John Petrucci Paul Guilbert Steve Vai Satriani. I mean this guy has such flow and feeling in his music. Sure this isn't the metal many people remember him for but its still very good.

  • I dont really like what Marty is doing currently, neither what he started doing after he left Megadeth. But I have to say, I really liked this song.

  • Its cause JP is playing on it...

  • marty is the fuckin man, hate him or love him, he fuckin rocks in my book!

  • sounds a little like sonic song but thats damn fine with me

  • What're you guys taking Marty's side over mine? You bunch of Benedict Arnolds.

  • Marty turned his back at America in favor of Japan.

  • good for him!!!

  • So?

  • Why shouldn't he? It's a bit more civilized place for a creative artist like him.

  • yea because its a different culture over there, you dont have to be part of a massive band to be recognised. Friedman and Gilbert are like superstars over there yet in the west most people would say "who are they?"

  • yea. also, i think this song is great, only cause of John Petrucci. Marty used to be good until he tried making megadeth pop, making dave uncomfortable, so Marty left to do queer music. if it were J Rock or J Metal, that'd be cool. But J Pop? He even stated not to like Metal, so why play it? If he wanted a softer style in playing, he should have went to Prog Metal instead. But no, he had to play pop.He turned his back to metal.

  • what the hell are you talking about? you're a fucking ignorant, marty left megadeth after the risk album because he hated the direction that megadeth was following at that time. And this direction was pop. an advice for you, before post shitty comments like that go fucking search for real information. your comment just prove that you're an ignorant. that all

  • let me put this so that a moron like you can understand. Marty said he never liked metal. i know where the fucking interview is at and its on youtube so you can see it. Marty and a pop/country producer worked on Risk and Dave agreed but wasn't ok by doing it. Marty's doing J-Pop after megadeth since then. your the fucking ignorant son of a bitch and your comment proved to be ignorant. and learn to type as well you fucking moron. you make Marty fans seem stupid

  • lolll you make me laugh so hard men, what are you trying to prove here by insulting me ahahahaha. and again you prove your totally ignorance. first, Marty said he is not the biggest fan of trash metal stuff and he is more a rock guitar player. Second, a guy like marty friedman who love and respect music like he does would never be in a band for almost ten years without loving what he does in that band.

  • third, Dave Mustaine was, is and will always be THE leader of megadeth. Mustaine makes all the decisions and write all the songs exept for the solos that he doesn't play so this is totally ridiculous that Marty and a producer work on a MEGADETH album without the agreed of Dave Mustaine. Dave Mustaine IS megadeth and the risk album was his idea as all the other megadeth albums and everything relie to megadeth. The other members are just sheeps that follow Dave and play what Dave wants to hear

  • first off, your dumbass started the insulting by being ignorant. i am not the ignorant one here because if you knew anything you dumbass megadeth fanboy, you'd know Marty is doing J-Pop. i guess he did love megadeth enough to take Tornado of Souls and fuck it up today. and the Dave Mustaine can make anyone here tell your a dumbass. you know nothing of Risk's history. i guess thats what a poser megadeth fan would say...

  • lollllllll probably you're the only one that know megadeth on earth. I think you're just a frustrated metal wannabefan that hate everything that isn't metal. hey men!! metal is not the only good thing on earth. Maybe you don't like the music that marty is doing right now but don't blame him and pretend he is the guy who try to make megadeth pop. That guy is Dave mustaine because Dave mustaine IS megadeth. I won't try to prove that I'm a bigger fan of megadeth than you, i'm not a child

  • i am not a frustrated metal wannabe fan that doesn't hate anything metal. first off dumbass, i am frustrated of Marty fans that know nothing of his work currently and idol him still and nothing with his work on megadeth. second, i am a metal fan, not a wannabe like you. thrid, how would i hate anything not metal IF I LISTEN TO JAZZ, BLUES, DISCO, CLASSIC ROCK, R&B AND EVEN OLD SCHOOL RAP (NO CURRENT SHIT) its even on my account page. Marty did make megadeth pop with Risk.

  • i also hate posers that say Dave is Megadeth. He is but just cause hes the frontman doesn't mean its all his decisions. And i am 15 and your what, 19? whats the difference with 4 ages. well, 3 because i will be 16 soon. age has nothing to do with knowledge. and i am not acting like a child. you are because your in complete denial of things or you don't know anything about megadeth. Dave even stated he gave too much control in the 90's. I will give you the actual info.

  • "After the success with "Trust", I thought to myself, wow, we've had a number one hit. We'd had four top five hits in a row, so why would I not want to give Dan even more control when it comes to the producing part on the next record? So I did, and it backfired".

There, thats the meat of it. And if Marty were doing J-Rock or J-Metal, i'd be cool with it but J-POP?! If you like that, you might as well be hearing JoinAss Brothers. Then we'd see whos the metal wannabe fan.

  • but in some point i agree with you, I think the new tornado of souls version suck compare to the original and I personnally love cacophony albums, dragon's kiss and RIP more than his solo albums after megadeth. it's totally ridicoulous to blame him to make megadeth pop. you can also blame Shannon Hamm to make death a shitty commercial band too a totally ridicoulous. i've spend enough time to answer you little kid that know everything probalby dave would kick you ass for sayingshitlikeyoudid

  • dave would agree with me. he dislikes Marty and talked shit about him on a unplugged session. the videos on youtube. Bud Prager produced Cryptic Writings and Risk and he tried to make megadeth too commercial. Marty was in on it too. Dave was ok with Cryptic Writing but when Risk happened, he felt unconformable. Lars also told Dave to try a black album thing and when Marty heard, he and Bud worked mostly for Risk. bet you didn't know that.

  • Don't listen to metallic, as he's going around pretty blatently flaming Marty Friedman. As i've seen his trolling in atleast one other Friedman video.

Metallic we all know you think Marty Friedman is a "fag", you can give it a rest.

  • Really, then tell me why its been only two videos i said it but in one, i brought it up and the other, someone brought the topic up. if playing j-pop, which if you play that, then you might as well be playing for Jonas Brothers, then your a fag.

"Metallic we all know you think Marty Friedman is a "fag", you can give it a rest."

why do i got to give being truthful to ignorant people like ChamberR a rest when he won't stop being a dumbass. if he were the best, he wouldn't kill Tornado of Souls.

  • "When it comes to Risk, there'd been people in there playing and I wouldn't even know who they were or where the parts came from, and I'm not used to that. I was a little bit intimidated by the success we had with Cryptic Writings, so when it came to creating new material after that, it's like being "power-drunk" - you want more. i got one more comment of info.

  • and sorry for my bad english, i'm a french canadian so english isn't my language.

  • The pop aspect of this album is so much fun to listen to.

  • Comment removed

  • i agree!! marty friedman is unique :)

  • hmmmm that's really hard to argue over

they're both pretty damn good in song writing

i love both megadeth (marty friedman days) and dream theater

  • @sexidolofsatan what a stupid useless comment, idiot, DIE

  • it's funny how people can contribute to a song together(such as john and marty)and people will still argue who's better.who cares?all that matters is that this song kicks ass...

  • @Slaytallidethrax I dont think they are the kind of people you can even argue about considering how different their styles are

  • Friedman is much better than petrucci,to me friedmans solo albums offer decent music with different approaches, i find when i listen to petrucci i always get a feeling of "i've heard this before" he should try playing some new chords.

  • john is not a fully soloist anyway, but he is still among the bests

  • Saying Petrucci is not a soloist, is the same as admitting you don't know jag shit about music... at least about Petrucci's music.

I was a Megadeth fan long ago and thought they were the best until I tried progressive rock (which I play in my band too...) so I ended up in Dream Theater, you'll have to ear both sides before you make an "ignorant" comment.

  • I said he is not a fully soloist. he is mainly a band member, he writes songs with other players. but marty writes all by himself.and john is east coast style since marty is west.

They are very different, it is very hard to say which one is better.

  • John writes 99% of all Dream Theater songs himself. Mike and Rudess help some time, but for the most part its just John. Add his solo project to that.

  • well in dream theater john doesn't write 99% of the lyrics. mike wrote 50% and john the others 50% with some help from jordan rudess.I mean there are albums that john is the prinipal writer but in others albums the principal witer is mike.

  • which John? the bassist does lyrics too, but he doesn't now. Out of every member, Kevin Moore wrote the best like Space Dye Vest or Eve.

  • wel when I said john I was talking about john petrucci, because the only lyrics that john myung has ever wrote was the lyrics for learning to live. and kevin moore was a great song writer but as a keyboard player I prefer jordan rudess

  • john myung has done more than learning to live. hes also written Lifting Shadows Off a Dream, Trial of Tears and Fatal Tragedy. Those songs are great but got nothing on Kevin Moore's writing.

  • John Myung has written more than one song. Hes written one song for each album from Images and Words to Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory. But Kevin Moore has written the best song, which is Space Dye Vest. A complete masterpiece

  • you're right about john myung.space dye vest is a masterpiece but you can't say it's their better song because the intrumental parts in space dye vest are not a big deal when you compare it with six degrees of inner turbulence or octavarium or change of seasons. It's your favourite song from DT and I respect that but you can't say it's their best song. my favourite song from Dt is A change of Seasons. oh and you listen to very good bands; congatulations ;D

  • thanks. I see it as a best because of the lyrics, the way the music flows and its got that for me. My next would be Repentance then A Change of Seasons, but its still debated for second spot. Space Dye Vest will remain my top. but hard to pick over Awake and Images and Words album. both are my tops and i can't pick between the two.

  • marty is a far better composer than pretucci because he does not get caught up in rules and just uses musicians intuition

  • 00:43 MIRTY FRIEDMAN

  • freakin cool i need to get a cd

  • petrucci is in this, dunno what part but that says they like eachothers guitar work so?.

  • Lemme tell you this. I got into marty and Megadeth at 10, when I was 12 I bought Marty's solo album Scenes, and love it to this day. I got into Dream Theater at 14 when they first hit the scene in '93 and have grown with their music til today. I honestly doubt I'll start hating Petrucci. He's got his own identity but is constantly progressing. Marty plays the same style all the time.

  • lol you didnt listen to marty's solo albums over the years have you?

  • did you not read my comment to which you responded? lol. I said I got into marty's solo albums when I was 12. Scenes was my favorite. But I've heard them all and can say without any bias that Petrucci is more technically proficient and his style does more for me than Marty's. love em both though.

  • lies. your just saying that to make you look like you know what your talking about. Lol

  • marty could have declined? who fucking knows. and doesn't mean a shit.

  • coulda woulda shoulda. lol

  • Yes he was , he played with tham in Tokyo at the end of the show.

  • so why didn't that make it to the dvd?lol. not good enough is my guess.

  • even DVDs don't have that much space. The other G3 tours (with Paul Gilbert and Robert Fripp) weren't even filmed for DVD.

What's more Marty came on for an encore, when the show was supposed to be 'over'. I would have liked it as a DVD extra though.

Marty might say yes to a G3 spot, but he's really busy in Japan , presenting TV shows, doing sideman gigs and stuff. Unless the whole G3 tour is Japan-based, I doubt he would have the time. Even Steve Vai's missed a couple of G3 tours.

  • @Suchar haglnuts just got his ass handed to him.

  • marty has done g3 way back,,,theres a video here of him with vai and satch on a bootleg video...searhc it..they just didnt put it out on video....in some concerts he invites other guest guitarists.,.theres one with EJ,petrucci,satch....vinnie moore, satch, vai, lukather

  • it's about time someone said that!lol. It's been up on the tee forever just waiting to be smacked.lol. great job!

  • they are different technique approach, john is more fast picking stuff, marty is more like apeggio, sweeping, bending stuff

they both great.but marty's music is more spicy

  • Eh wtf?

Have you ever heard Petrucci's sweeps? That dude IS famous for his chromatics and sweeps.

I'd say Marty has a wider vibrato and good melody. while Petrucci would be someone with a comparitively smaller vibrato range and more JAZZY

  • that made no sense lol

  • Hey Petrucci actually preaches wide Vibrato. He even teaches it clinics.

  • Wide vibrato and most metal riffs can be attributed to michael schenker from UFO fame. I still think he's got some of the baddest riffs out there. Listen to mother mary. Old shyt but bad ass.

  • Marty isnt a very good looking man, but what does it matter? He could have any woman that he wanted.

  • he was semi-good looking back with megadeth near Rust in Peace....but times have changed(wtf i sound gay?!?!?!)

  • dont get me wrong, I love marty`s playing, but I dont like his guitar sound on the melody

  • aguante argentina y aguante friedman mierda

  • Petrucci is good, but; marty is better than all!!!

    marty returns to megadeth? when?

    wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeennnnnnnnnnn!!!!!!

  • first of all Marty is great but, petrucci is considered by many to be the greatest in the world. Marty did some great stuff with megadeth but it started atrophying towards the end. Glen Drover is a perfect fit with the new MD. He is killer. Didn't it work out well for everyone when Mustaine left Metallica? Let Marty do his own thing!

  • PETRUCCI is a god of guitar!!!

  • When he said his rhythm guitar was inspired by the Ramones I didn't believe him until I heard this song.

  • I like Petrucci a lot, but Marty > Petrucci.

  • I agree...

  • Petrucci is dull

  • Marty good, Petrucci better

  • No encuentro en ningun lado la tablatura...

  • Point taken guitarsmitty, thanks. BTW, just saw Dream Theater last night in San Diego. They are all phenominal!

  • You ARE lost mr truck driver! Petrucci is better technically and his note choice sounds much smoother. Even when he's playing a million miles an hour (faster than Marty ;)) his notes completely fit the song. Where as Marty plays very unorthodox notes that sometimes are painful to listen to. And as far as "out of tune"? lol. I'm pretty sure a guy that goes to Berkley has perfect pitch. lol.

  • It's a matter of taste then I guess. I like both artists, I'm in awe of Petrucci like the rest, he is a great composer and DT albums sound really good. But when he goes off on solos both live and on his instrumental album, he is off compared to someone who is always on like Marty. That's all. As far as faster, I think you missed some of Marty's work then before Megadeth. DT met at Berkley, then quit soon after thinking they didn't need it.

  • lol. i've met a few berkley grads and dropouts(strangely, the dropouts are usually better than the grads......) and perfect pitch isn't a very common thing among them. although they are close. i like martys note choices better because they add a bit of mystery and unpredictability to his sound, but i totally get what you mean about every now and then plays "painful" notes. this really wasnt one of his better songs.

  • Dude Petrucci always plays in key. As for Marty, he himself said it's not always about what key you play in it's about making it sound like something you like. Which is why he plays alot of asian-themed songs and other stuff, though it doesn't mean i', against Friedman, I love both Friedman and Petrucci, two of my favorite guitarists.

  • Friedman and Becker = good duo. Marty bit off a little more than he could chew with Petrucci though. Petrucci pawns Friedman. I love marty though (since solo Scenes and all Megadeth. But John Petrucci is clearly the best all around guitarist in the world. IMHO!

  • lol any of you guys heard of guthrie govan?

  • yeah, he's a monster. When you start the Petrucci's, Govan's, Cooley's, Bucketheads, Satriani's, Vai's, Romeo's, Loureiro's, Lane's etc. It will ultimately come down not to skill level, but to personal taste. Which guy offers whatever it is needed for your soul. For me it's Petrucci.

  • yeah you're exactly right, it's about personal taste. i hate it when people always go on about someone's technical ability and how it makes them the best. does nobody just like a guitarist because the music they play sounds good any more?

  • lol. exactly man ;D

  • for me its jason becker

  • love becker too, it's a shame what happened to him. but at least at such a young age he gave us some great music to listen to for the rest of our lives. cheers!

  • ya man becker and friedman really gave us great music.. and petrucci is good but marty and jason are way better honestly .. marty and becker create melodic amazin pieces and as for petrucci i dunno wat the hell he calls his music.. good ability though

  • wow man you're pretty ignorant. Do a little more research on Petrucci before making such harsh statements. First of all Petrucci plays circles around Friedman technically. second of all, and this is where personal taste comes into play, Petrucci's solos are much more satisfying with his note choice and ability. check out my channel and watch some Petrucci magic.

  • its hard to tell wich is petrucci cuz he is doing bendings marty style..but by the sound of the guitar and some phrases you know its him

  • im gettin this cd, loudspeaker is sweet

  • Fuck!

    marty is the best1

  • i still think Vito Bratta is the best

  • i saw him live!!!yeah!!!

it was really great. but i prefer him with Jackson thoe

  • good for him to leave megadeth and play this kind of music

  • i wish marty would stay in megadeth

  • ditto! I really liked his solo stuff too.. but his stuff with Megadeth is my favorite! but then again I think solo havent more impact as part of a song not a 5 minute wank fest...

  • Cacophony owned.

  • Word.

  • Petrucci rulez! But I like Marty, too!

  • hahaha the drawing of marty with jason rulez,

also the photos where they are together made me cry, aaah good timee will never be back

  • merty idol proman you are the best guitar player

  • Holy shit, John sounds A LOT like Marty here. At first, I wasn't even sure if it was him, but the pinch harmonic and "whammied" notes gave it away (Marty uses neither). That, and the less expressive vibrato.

It seems like Marty "influenced" yet another well-known guitarist xD. Jason Becker (damn Lou Gehrig's disease) and Paul Gilbert kindly welcome you, John. Haha.

  • Word, dude, he sounds alot like Marty. It's not something that I've seen in any of his solo stuff or any Dream Theater stuff, though.

  • <
