  • I knew it was legit when he said "micro-units"

  • Fashioned an old glass pill bottle into a slide today, will do for now

  • Awesome - thanks Jody! everything I was wondering, aswered!

  • hey finally some progress. i have been trying to figure out how to get such clean sound with a slide (cut copper pipe, oh well) for a while now. now I no not to use a pick. thank you so much

  • youtube.com/watch?v=RsNZ4FHvVOw This is probably a bad example, since Slash is just fantastic at everything he does. But he DOES play with a slide and a pick, not with his fingers. Just making a point :P

  • thank you for your detailed video.

  • what tuning is this

  • @fastfun2 I think it's DGDGBD

  • I'm totally into slide now :D

  • Easily the sickest tone ever.

  • This is one of the best videos on slide guitar basics I've seen.

  • Excellent lesson! Please keep them coming and show us what we need to be doing-

    Awesome!

    Thanks Jody!

  • Thank you so much. Just bought my first slide. Got home & left hand seemed to quickly workout what was needed, but did'nt occur to me to ditch the pick!!

Your lesson is awesome. Straightforward and easy to follow. You have a great tone, which just inspires me to really try and learn this amazing style of blues guitar.

  • Holy shit!!!! Duane looks different!!!

  • Jody

    Thanks.

I'm making all the mistakes you highlight.

    NO LONGER !!

  • I'm curious as to which tuning you're in? I've noticed several slide players playing in Open Tunings such as E and D. This is a very helpful video. Thank you for posting!

  • BEST SLIDE GUITAR LESSON EVER! THANK YOU MAN! EVERYONE ELSES VIDEO HAS TOO MUCH USELESS WORDS

  • Man, You make it look sooooooooooo easy.

Now I know what I was doing wrong------using a pick ( NO ) No pick....

  • i love u jody worrell

  • awesome tips thanks jody

  • i wish i can do that lol

  • I keep thinking of "in my time of dying"...

  • @ledzep468 yea and Page used a pick! But I guess God can do anything he wants.

  • is there a name for the riff thats being used here? im new to this, and dont know what its called, or if it even has a name. id like to try and find tabs, or a video on just the riff, cause i like it, but im having a hard time getting it. great video though! vary helpful.

  • Thanks! This has helped a LOT. No more picks, I'll get into this method straight away.

  • right on. great lesson

  • love the background

  • This guy is beast!!!!

  • Thanks, good help, keep teaching!

  • Fretless guitar just to add a little difficulty x)

  • That damn noise! I knew I was doing something wrong.

  • Thank you very much for this.

  • thanks for the helpful info... good for beginners! =]

  • this was definitely helpful !

  • What tuning is he on?

  • In Micro units we're (insert tones here)

  • Thanks for clearing up some things mate!

  • Excellent and very enlightening. Very clear tutorial. Thanks so much!

  • mathematicaly where that fret is?

  • @CHIP135791 I didn't understand it either....

  • @CHIP135791 - The metal bars which create the fret are placed in specific areas mathematically according to the length of the neck and amount of frets in which we require. You cannot just guess where the metal bars are placed, they need to each be measured correctly. This involves a lot of maths work to get precise results.

  • This lesson is a big shit...you can not learn from this

  • @szelidrocker - Explain why.

  • Thank you thank you thank you for this video! I just bought a slide today after wanting one for so long (even though I had tried before and failed) I knew I could find a video on you tube to help me! :p First one I pulled up

  • @Francisis The "secret" to slide playing, And i learned this the hard way is to place the slide ABOVE the fret , not behind it.and slide into a barre chord, or the last two high notes on a chord, that gives you the sound you will be looking for.

Ex; slide to the 5th fret, E,B strings, that gives you an A lick,7th fret, A,D strings, also gives you an A lick 7th Fret E,B strings gives you a B lick, and so on

I'm sure there's a ton more to it theory wise but I'm self taught

    Good luck

  • Pick and fingers each have their spot. I like pick a lot for a harsher more "bitey" sound, and fingers for a good smooth, but still slightly aggressive sound.

  • u can us a pick

  • aaaaaa no wonder mine sounded so shit :D

  • thanks jody. this helped alot!!!

  • Hmmm thing is my slide is longer than my finger, so if I hold it like u, the end of it sticks out, and it's hard to hold :P

  • This guitar is Open E?...here in Brazil we use open E to a traditional 10 string guitar we use in folk brazilian music...I am trying to use the slide in this guitar...very helpful your vid.

  • very very top notch lesson...no messin very easy to understand..you got the right message across my freind...lee from england

  • This was really clear and concise. Loved how he talks about the actual technique and what his fingers are trying to do rather than "here's a lick, watch and play!"

  • @nicknicksiren Yeah. That's the best way to teach, this guy's a great teacher!

  • Great lesson! thank u

  • Very well done lesson-thanks!

  • i consider myself good at the guitar,i can play the entire layla acoustic including solos which isnt easy but for the life of me i cant get the hang of dat slide

  • This guy should be in the Sopranos.

He should also give me that guitar... :)

  • Right on the point, perfect lesson!

  • Sow I read some were that to play slide guitar you head to set up your guitar for slide, this is raising the action on your guitar, sow my Q. -Is this necessary? And what wood be a good distends to set ur strings.

    Thnx for the lesson.

  • you can slide on a guitar with floyd rose right. ive played for 4 years and im not a NOOB.

  • nice lesson, mate.

  • BEEFCAKE!! XD Damn your action is low. And you're playing slide with that? Props, man, props.

  • Comment removed

  • excellent lessons

  • man this is a great video. very nice details about the string muting, and the left-hand technique for how you're holding the slide. those little subtle things can take forever to figure out on your own, but make all the difference in the world! keep up the videos!

  • but when page plays in my time of dying live he is using a pick is there a shortcut he took to achieve this or is this even possible

  • Trying very hard to get it down. Breaking BAD habbits !!! Thanks !!!

  • what LP are you playing?

  • Wow! Fantastic video! You make it SO clear. Slide guitar has always been a mystery to me. You're an excellent teacher. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge with the rest of us.

  • tocas bien

pero no entiendo tus explicaciones por que hablo SPANISH

  • thank you!

  • So That's The Trick!!! I Always Tried To Use A Pick, But Now I Know What I Was Doing Wrong!!!

  • I want to double like this. WELL WORTH THE TIME TO WATCH!

  • Top drawer lesson!

  • that sounds so cool!

  • Holly shit. This is easy! Great technique I never had any luck with the slide.

  • you're coooool, and your lessons are good :D

  • What tuning?

  • Thank You so very much for the awesome instructional video on this. I have been trying for some time now and had some of it right... but I think I too will get a slide that is only down to my knuckle. Also... the height of your strings from the neck... it really shouldn't matter then if you play correctly?

  • awesome lesson helped tons

  • You're a smart guy. Not one wasted second on this video. Very helpful!

  • Great lesson, thanks a bunch!

  • Sounds good I watched this because I don't have full mobility of my arms, wrist or fingers I'm in a wheelchair so I have to play with a slide bar and I love music and learned a lot from this. :D

  • i have a piece of a plastic pipe that i use as my guitar slide. Is that okay, anybody?

  • @RiffRaff993 too soft bro! glass or metal tubes... try a spray can. haha even a spoon works (search it, classic)

  • @kiwiooboy Thanks! I am going to my city's guitar center tomorrow to get a metal one :D

  • Awesome. I loved it. So cool, I'm gonna purchase one slide because of this lesson.

  • this is such a great video. all these tips made all the difference for me. plus your guitar is beautiful. rock on

  • dude ur voice is perfect for the blues

  • nicely done my friend, i've gotten a pretty good grasp on almost every aspect of the guitar except this one... i don't know why, i've always loved southern rock, loved the allman brothers, and loved slide guitar, but i just never gave it the right approach and consequently stayed away from it, instead working with flamenco, two-hand tapping, sweep picking, etc. but now, thanks to this vid, i think i'm gonna give it some legit attention. thanks again!

  • awesome ty

  • very helpful, thx alot!

  • tytytytyy

  • This is nice. Finally, some practical advice that isn't too ridiculously dumbed down.

  • damn i suck.

  • Is this guy playing with an open chord tuning?

  • @0x1 no. if you listen closely when hes explaining the right hand muting technique, you can hear its in standard tuning.

  • best one on youtube so far!! thanks jody

  • thanks much. and how hard am i pressing down? still getting some buzz.

  • @meviewstuffnow Raise your strings till you can get more control, then work on dampening unused strings.

  • i love your tone... great video helps alot!!

  • Really helpfully start off slide tuition ! This has helped me alot .. Thanks !

  • great lesson, helped me alot. He teahces very well and easy to understand. Thanks man

  • but what if you palm mute the streings your not using...i can do tha im just wondering because

  • hey i actually have an acoustic/electric dobro!

Does anyone knows a full electric one like the chandler LECTRASLIDE?? Please don't tell me to buy the chandler one i do not have the money for such a guitar^^

  • Very good, I'll be watching this when my slide appears in the post in the next couple of days!

  • "On the fret, not in-between". Don't say that to Duane Allman haha

  • im pickin up a slide i MUST learn the "Walkin Blues" in the style of eric clapton

  • The slide in that song is beast.

  • You CAN use a pick. Just look at Eric Clapton. If you know how to play properly, you don't need to use your fingers.

  • Equally, if you know how to play properly, you don't need a pick :-p

  • @NurseDischord If you know how to play good songs, you do need a pick.

Try playing Lamb Of God or The Offspring without a pick.

  • @127gggwtf Can of worms! Can of worms! What do you mean when you say good songs? There are plenty of good songs that you can't play with just a pick. Ask Mark Knopfler, Chet Atkins, Jeff Beck, Tommy Emmanuel, Robert Johnson..in fact, any guitarist born before 1900.

Anyhoo, you can play Lamb Of God and Offspring style music without a pick. Listen out for German mid 90's pop/rock supremoes Guano Apes. No picks there.

  • @NurseDischord Alright, fine, you got me. I still like playing with a pick though, I disapprove of going outside my comfort zone.

  • what kind of tuning is his guitar??? regular or dropped or what?

  • If you use the first and second fingers behind the slide on your left hand, does that mean that you don't have to mute the notes with your right hand?

  • No, it's no different than touching the strings behind a note you're playing on regular guitar. If I play the low G note on the E string, and after I pluck I touch an F or F# note, it doesn't affect the ringing of the G. The same thing is with the slide, but I notice I play less sloppily when I do keep my first, second and third fingers rested on the strings behind the slide. (I play slide with my pinky instead of 3rd finger.

  • i used a pic the first time lol thats the exact sound i had... i thought u needed a certain guitar with high action.. thanx for the lesso

  • Bravo! Brilliant lesson!

  • his he using an open tuning for this vid?

  • My slide hits off my frets, is my action too low?

  • yes

  • Yeah same here

  • i use a pick for slide. its just a different way of dampening the strings. i use my free fingers to mute the high strings and my palm for the low strings. unless im on the low E ill use just the fingers to mute.

sometimes ill use fingers though for a softer attack. i think its wise to be able to do both.

  • idk if anyone has heard stevie ray vaughan talk, but this guy sounds oddly like him and i can't get over it.

  • @bpaschall30 seriously he does...a little wierd.

  • i liked this alot! hey everybody i need you to watch some of my vids and tell me what you think. especially the people who can play guitar. i need some pointers and some advice :) that would be great!!!

  • Well, this explains why I sound terrible at slide. I have been trying to use a pick AND dampen the strings with my right hand...talk about a stumble fest. Maybe now I can play One Way Out and sound half way decent at it.

BTW: Is that a 58 plaintop? Sure is beautiful!

    Thanks for the great video.

  • when do you acctually use this?? btw i got a slide for christmas and had NO idea how to use it

  • You can use slide in a variety of way. It's most often associated with blues, but try it with your digital delay for some cool special effects sounds. You also hear slide in some pop tunes and even in heavy stuff, like Steve Via's "bad horsie" Experiment and have fun. Try it with Open E and Open A tuning, etc. Have fun.

  • rofl same

  • Well, you use it whenever you want. Check a guy named Rory Gallagher, he does magic with the slide.

  • Slide for xmas? You unloved?

  • lmfao!!

  • haora se que todos los dias se aprende algo nuevo.....

  • Thanks for the tips! I bought a pipe and i am struggling with it! I sounded very bad! I'll try to put these tecniques going to get a better sound! Thanks!

  • your a good teacher - well expleaned,

  • yo i liked this guy

hes so chill and easy going

nice job very helpful espically with the slide bring above the knuckle.

  • Great vid by the way....

  • when i play slide the slide rubs on the frets and sounds bad, but i don't want to raise my bridge for fear of destroying the beautiful action it has right now. any solution?

  • @nfsfreak72 get another guitar

  • @nfsfreak72 u could do like gary rossington on free bird and put a metal bar right beside the nut

  • Very good explanation of technique! Thanks.

  • It had that Hendrix sound to it!

  • tanx it was very useful

  • I'm finding this dudes house and stealing his guitar

  • Thanks! A big help! :D

  • Concise & clear, thanks for posting!

  • hey man awesome video, i was wondering what tuning is that?

  • at last a good lesson about silde guitar

  • Wow... great lesson. taught me a lot!

  • Wow, this helps alot thank you very much!

  • thanks! very helpful

  • how does everybody get that sound....!!!!

  • best side lesson i've ever come across. thank you for the video.

  • What a great, concise but comprehensive overview. Brilliant stuff.

  • that was really helpful. I never knew that you had to fingerpick. I always played with a pick and it didnt really work out

  • u can play with pick depends on how u wanna mute the extra strings

  • people play with picks.

  • You really know how to lay down this info for us man, thanks a lot for sharing!

  • what distortion are you using? its an outstanding tone

  • Cheers

  • good technique for damping. that helps a lot. but sometimes those extra strings ringing slightly sound good on acoustic.

  • That was sooo useful! Thanks!

  • damn ... wish i have huge hands like that.

  • nice les paul

  • brb im gonna go tryn play my slide better...

  • thanks man, this was awsome

  • cant you just mute with your palm? nice playing

  • thats what i have been doing, with mixed results. sometimes it sounds really good, but other times i just cant pull it off, but thats probably just me lol

  • wow... you're cool
