Unfortunately, Atlantic Records' influence over Lupe's album really shows. Production-wise, Lasers sounds very mainstream, with radio-standard generic horns, simple 808-style beats, and club-banging synths. One or two of the songs even go so far as to include Auto-Tune over Lupe's voice. It's sad to hear, really. Overall, Lasers is still a good album, but it could have been a classic had Atlantic just respected Lupe's creative genius. F*ck major record labels.

It is the artist responsibility to seek legal advice before signing any deals.It is a bit wrong for someone to come back after he signs a 360 deal and complain about it. Wow. This just completely blew my mind. When I received a suggestion to look at this video, I expected some surprising stuff, but nothing of this caliber. You tell one of your artists to record a verse over a beat that YOU made, then go back say that you don't like it!? THEN you say that you won't promote the album!? Good God. 360 deals aren't going anywhere; they are here to stay. It was only for the Michael Jacksons, Madonnas and Jay-Zs at first. Now, almost every label does it. Its not always a bad thing, depending on the POV. If I'm not mistaken, Jay-Zs 360 deal allowes him front money for his investments. Artists are going to have to unionize or take the Lupe approach to avoid.

@getemboyz08 If the label (music distributor) gets 25% then who gets the majority? It can't be the retailers, that's just plain ole' stupid. In the film industry, the theaters get 30%, and the distributor gets 50 to 55%.

The days of the starving artist are almost non existent so you make choices sometimes they work and sometimes not! 360 deals are more beneficial for established acts, less for new acts! People can complain as much as they desire but it still comes down with who has the green, if you have that then you have the power!

The haves of big business make 530 time more than their average employee not including bonus'! The reality is you cant get nothing from investing nothing financially in your career. One of those track they sent Lupe is B.O.B's Nothing on You. It's funny when you listen to B.O.B big hits Nothing on You and Airplanes. Those tracks are all about the hook and anybody could have spit verses on those tracks. Lupe didn't do Nothing on You because he wasn't going to get any publishing off the record.

I ride with Lupe all the way on this one. But I have to say this......FOR A FEW DECADES NOW underground hip-hop artist have been exposing, protesting, and preaching the same message as lupes' but NOBODY has given a rats ass about these artist: "Mos Def", "Talib Kweli", "Black Thought", "Pharoah Monche", (all just as dope as Lupe but have been in the game twice as long as Lupe) . Im not complaining because its about time a lot of people are showing interest now but damn....what took so long?

@roniebek 25% isn't a lot if you ask me, and it all depends on the expenses. Like, 25% goes to the Label, then about 20% goes to the retailers then the rest goes to the crew.

Record labels = worldwide oligopoly. This small system of labels controls everything! Radio, DJ playlists, City Venues, and are majorly concerned w/ key demographics (teens) and they need artists that they can use to cross market across all media platforms. @eathenicus it depends who you're with though in movies, they have a whole crew to break that money to, it's not like it's one person that gets 55%. get that 55% and divide that between 50 people who work on set. depending on how good it is comes off on your check. and music has alot less people working on tracks and albums than film.no matter how you look at it, he is getting cheated off his money and that wasn't even the deal when he got signed either.

Its like defiling the art of music.And majority of underground hip hop artists aren't signed BECAUSE they have a great message. The people don't wanna hear about that all the time.They mostly wanna hear about money, hoes, cars, clothes from fake gangstas. Only the underground audience cares about the music, and its artists. With major artists, as soon as they stop makin "hits", the fans will forsake em.

360 deals aren't going anywhere; they are here to stay. It was only for the Michael Jacksons, Madonnas and Jay-Zs at first. Now, almost every label does it. Its not always a bad thing, depending on the POV. If I'm not mistaken, Jay-Zs 360 deal allowes him front money for his investments. Artists are going to have to unionize or take the Lupe approach to avoid.
