@vgr112261 I have twelve year old students that can do this. No offense to Peter Criss. He's the reason I started drumming in the first place and his legacy is intact as being influencial. The only really great player in KISS was Ace. Not a great solo.
Peter will go down in history as one of the best. Maybe not THE best, but definitely one of the best. Other than with Kiss fans, I think he's under-rated. As an adult and a drummer he could have done without the reverb and sound fx. It pads the performance and the skill. God bless u catman!

I'm a schooled drummer of 25 yrs. and I'm a huge fan of the masters like Steve Gadd, Vinnie Colaiuta, Neil Peart, and John Bonham. However I was 10 yrs. old in the mid. 70's and Peter Criss was like my Ringo Starr. As drummers the feel is more important than alot of notes. If you can play alot of notes with feel, great. @jt20042 Agreed! Eric Carr and Eric Singer were and are really good drummers in Kiss but when people talk about Kiss music, it's always the stuff that Peter Criss played on, he just had the style and feel to swing those songs like Strutter and Rock N' Roll All Night.
@jmdrummer7 I agree. I mean I have all the respect in the world for both Eric Carr and Singer. Carr had a heavy style and his drum style suited what KISS and most other rock bands were doing in the 1980's. Singer is solid, but when both of those guys play KISS songs that Peter originally played on, they didn't sound quite right to me. There is only one Catman:)
@jt20042 I hear ya loud and clear. Peter Criss was the original and the best drummer for that band, and often wrongly disrespected. A great example is The Pearl Drum Co., Peter Criss played their gear and put them on the road to where they are today. He was playing their gear when nobody else was, what did they do for him? He's playing DW drums now. John Bonham passed in 1980 and Ludwig still proudly puts him on a pedestal, as they should. C'mon Pearl show the Catman some love!
@jmdrummer7 Yea, the drum solos on Alive 1 & Alive 2 are classics. Not the fastest etc... but the feel and timing is what makes them great. Same with Ace's solos. His sense of feel & style makes his solos far better than any million notes a second solo. They have enfluenced so many people since the 70's. Ace & Peter were masters at knowing sense of style and feeling the music.
@jmdrummer7 Totally agree with you! My first drum hero was Ringo Starr because I have a older brother that is a mad Beatles fan, the house resonated with Beatles songs all day all night! But as you grow up & learn about other drummers & different music you start to develop your own style. But I never forget the 1st inspiration that got me hook or interested in drums & music.
@jmdrummer7 Anybody can play the same thing over and over like this. You can play with feeling, but if it's the same thing over and over it gets boring. You need to be imaginative, show some technique, and shred the kit a bit. Peter Criss is not even in the top 100 greatest drummers. He is only talked about because he is in Kiss.
@canucktheclown Technique is great, I think the stuff that Steve Gadd did w/ Paul Simon and Steely Dan is a classic case of technique w/ feel. However in bands like Kiss, The Beatles, and The Stones, the songs come before each individual instrument. Also, as drummers when we go over board w/ technique we usually appeal to other musicians and loose the average non-musician listeners. After all, drummers from Vinnie Colaiuta to Peter Criss admire The Beatles because they appeal to the masses.
@jmdrummer7 I don't want someone who appeals to the masses. That would be like me like Jimi Hendrix because he appealed to the masses. If I want to like a musician, I don't want to like them because the masses like them. I will like them for their talent, ability, their passion. That to me is more influential than appealing to the masses.
@canucktheclown I agree that people should not listen to or buy music based on what the masses like, but the fact remains that there are people that work all week and when the weekend comes they like to crank up some Kiss, Beatles, or AC/DC. For others they might enjoy Rush, King Crimson, or Yes. To each his own!
@jmdrummer7 If you like the former three bands you mentioned and not because the masses do than that's fine. But following a trend in music because you think it's cool to do is dumb. I think Rush and Yes are amazing. I love progressive rock/progressive metal.
@canucktheclown I agree, musical taste is personal thing. I do like the Beatles but I also like Rush. Playing and studying drums in the 80's the big deal in rock was the heavy grooves of Bonham and the progressive playing of Peart. Like I said, I agree that following a trend to be cool is ridiculous. I could never get into the New Wave music of the 80's (eg. Flock of Segulls) or the grunge sound of the 90's.
@canucktheclown Yeah, Alice In Chains would be the one I'd pick if I had to pick a grunge band. By the way just saw Rush back in April, great concert. To celebrate the 30 yr. anniversary of Moving Pictures they played the whole record to start their 2nd set.
@jmdrummer7 Temple of the Dog (short lived band) and Pearl Jam are two other better ones in the grunge genre. Shut up, I've always wanted to see Rush in concert! Take a look at the two drum solo weeks on "The Late Show." There are some amazing solos from those two week of what I saw. Neil Peart, Gavin Harrison of Porcupine Tree, Anton Fig (CBS Orchesta plus a session/freelance musician), Tony Royster, Jr., Sheila E., Stewart Copleand of The Police. All great stuff.

Good solo but kill the sound effects. Pete's car crash in 78 wrecked him as a drummer cause he never saw a doc about it and he later got bad arthritis in his foreams. He was an arm drummer not a wrist drummer.
peter criss remains in that category..the one and only catman..and also, let's not forget eric carr..who was a much better drummer than peter technically, but could still groove..eric singer's a very good drummer and is technically better than the other 2, but not one who'll go down in kiss' memorable history....
peter's solos were not about showing off chops or how fast or technically good he was...with peter it's all about groove, and rhythm , and having a good ol' time..i'm a professional session drummer and engineer and owe my formative years and learning to peter criss..yes , we all know that his not he's not a technically good drummer..but neither was ringo, keith moon,or charlie watts..and they're some of the most memorable and beloved drummers in rock history because they could groove !
haha I love how people say he sucks while half of those people probobly even can't play the drums.Peter Criss maybe isnt one of the best but he sure knows how to entertain people. He deseserves alot of respect .
He was good enough that he SHOULD have worked his solos out a bit more. His drums also SOUND kinda crappy and putting the FX on em diminishes it even more. He should also have laid off the booze and blow until AFTER the gig.
@armann500 Don't be sorry,it's TRUE. I myself prefer the original line up,but there is NO doubt that Eric was a KILLER drummer and energized the band to a level they hadn't had since probably 1975.
I saw this tour back in 1977,in the Omni in Atlanta, and it was awesome! Peter Criss is one awesome drummer, and a good guy.he was actually one of the legendary Gene Krupa's students, and has drumming influence from him.Long live Peter Criss!
Gene's brother Harry Witz on sound. (founded DB Sound in Chicago) Single headed toms. Shitty mics. Phase shifter effect. No gates...no compression. There sould be footage somewhere of this solo done in Japan...itz longer and Peter goes off on a different direction....very technical.
The problem is the audio. Aside from his snare, all the toms sound the same so it's difficult to appreciate this solo as much as it deserves. Peter is no Peart or Bonham, but when he was good he was REALLY good. Unfortunately when he sucked he REALLY sucked(Largo 79).
@Bashfulbonzo Well I'm not a drummer. I'm a guitar player so I don't really know too much about drumming. But this solo sounded pretty good for just hitting anything on the kit.
dont you realize its all about showmanship and entertainment, its not about drumming technique and skill... if you want to see skill and proficiency then goto a small jazz club... not a stadium,,,, you need to realize this as quick as possible or you are going to be forever conrfused!
@fyrifan - Funny you say that, because most rock drummers don't have the groove, dynamics, feel and general ability to play jazz. I like a rock drummer as much as anyone, but jazz is incredibly technique oriented.
If your a druumer and you don't hear the Gene Krupa influences in this solo you need to look up some Gene Krupa vids. Krupa was a big influence on Peter and he study with him some as well. Peter is a jazz big band guy. Playing in rock.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
NEWS ALERT: Peter 'catman' Criss has died under mysterious circumstances. KISS manager Doc McGhee explained "an accident occurred on Saturday night. Peter was malnourished from his diet of canned cat food when he went on a four day coke binge. I don't want to go into detail about the tragic incident... let's just say it involved a rottweiler and a jar of peanut butter."
Criss was the original drummer for rock group KISS and will be missed. RIP Peter.
@Lehamic It took me 30 minutes to stop laughing enough to type this. Mickey Dolenz lives!!! In the words of Jim Rome.Epic! That is the funniest shit I've heard in years. I've been a Kiss fan since 74 and 7 years old and thought he sounded good on their studio albums but his solos were awful. I remember thinking the drum set I made from Baskin Robbins ice cream containers and my moms pots and pans sound better. I have never understood why anyone would allow that noise to be released on an album.
@rockluvr77 The kit sounds terrible. The tone of it is just awful. I don't understand why Peter Criss gets so much praise. He doesn't do anything good. There are so many better drummers that are better that don't get half as much praise.
@steve5568 Who cares if he wore makeup? That overshadows what is supposed to be his ability. I don't care if you wear makeup. If you have talent, ability, technique, than all that flash doesn't matter.
yup. He died of feline Leukemia , caught it from one of his cats. On a side note, Peter sure could fill up a litter box after one of those infamous Italian meals. R.I.P. catman Criss.
Peter Criss died sometime in late 2009. After he was replaced in KISS, he vowed to eat nothing but canned cat food until he was returned to his rightful place in the band. Ironically, it was the steady diet of cat food that killed the catman. Yes, it is gross, but Peter Criss always was an idiot.
Who cares if you believe me or not? Peter Criss is dead. He died from a combination of bad cat makeup and a lack of drumming skills. It hasn't been covered in the news because nobody cares.

01po01po 10 months ago
@jmdrummer7 Totally agree with you! My first drum hero was Ringo Starr because I have a older brother that is a mad Beatles fan, the house resonated with Beatles songs all day all night! But as you grow up & learn about other drummers & different music you start to develop your own style. But I never forget the 1st inspiration that got me hook or interested in drums & music.

@jmdrummer7 well said! agreed totally
Livetowin65 6 months ago
@jmdrummer7 Anybody can play the same thing over and over like this. You can play with feeling, but if it's the same thing over and over it gets boring. You need to be imaginative, show some technique, and shred the kit a bit. Peter Criss is not even in the top 100 greatest drummers. He is only talked about because he is in Kiss.
canucktheclown 4 months ago
@canucktheclown Technique is great, I think the stuff that Steve Gadd did w/ Paul Simon and Steely Dan is a classic case of technique w/ feel. However in bands like Kiss, The Beatles, and The Stones, the songs come before each individual instrument. Also, as drummers when we go over board w/ technique we usually appeal to other musicians and loose the average non-musician listeners. After all, drummers from Vinnie Colaiuta to Peter Criss admire The Beatles because they appeal to the masses.
jmdrummer7 4 months ago
@jmdrummer7 I don't want someone who appeals to the masses. That would be like me like Jimi Hendrix because he appealed to the masses. If I want to like a musician, I don't want to like them because the masses like them. I will like them for their talent, ability, their passion. That to me is more influential than appealing to the masses.
canucktheclown 4 months ago
@canucktheclown I agree that people should not listen to or buy music based on what the masses like, but the fact remains that there are people that work all week and when the weekend comes they like to crank up some Kiss, Beatles, or AC/DC. For others they might enjoy Rush, King Crimson, or Yes. To each his own!
jmdrummer7 4 months ago
@jmdrummer7 If you like the former three bands you mentioned and not because the masses do than that's fine. But following a trend in music because you think it's cool to do is dumb. I think Rush and Yes are amazing. I love progressive rock/progressive metal.
canucktheclown 4 months ago
@canucktheclown I agree, musical taste is personal thing. I do like the Beatles but I also like Rush. Playing and studying drums in the 80's the big deal in rock was the heavy grooves of Bonham and the progressive playing of Peart. Like I said, I agree that following a trend to be cool is ridiculous. I could never get into the New Wave music of the 80's (eg. Flock of Segulls) or the grunge sound of the 90's.
jmdrummer7 4 months ago
@jmdrummer7 There is some good grunge music like Alice in Chains. I can't stand Nirvana.
canucktheclown 4 months ago
@canucktheclown Yeah, Alice In Chains would be the one I'd pick if I had to pick a grunge band. By the way just saw Rush back in April, great concert. To celebrate the 30 yr. anniversary of Moving Pictures they played the whole record to start their 2nd set.
jmdrummer7 4 months ago

He was an arm drummer not a wrist drummer.

peter criss remains in that category..the one and only catman..and also, let's not forget eric carr..who was a much better drummer than peter technically, but could still groove..eric singer's a very good drummer and is technically better than the other 2, but not one who'll go down in kiss' memorable history....
blica1 1 year ago
peter's solos were not about showing off chops or how fast or technically good he was...with peter it's all about groove, and rhythm , and having a good ol' time..i'm a professional session drummer and engineer and owe my formative years and learning to peter criss..yes , we all know that his not he's not a technically good drummer..but neither was ringo, keith moon,or charlie watts..and they're some of the most memorable and beloved drummers in rock history because they could groove !

Good grief - he is so crap. Worst drum solo ever.
MissEgasMoniz 1 year ago
He was good enough that he SHOULD have worked his solos out a bit more. His drums also SOUND kinda crappy and putting the FX on em diminishes it even more. He should also have laid off the booze and blow until AFTER the gig.

armann500 1 year ago
@armann500 Don't be sorry,it's TRUE. I myself prefer the original line up,but there is NO doubt that Eric was a KILLER drummer and energized the band to a level they hadn't had since probably 1975.

I saw this tour back in 1977,in the Omni in Atlanta, and it was awesome! Peter Criss is one awesome drummer, and a good guy.he was actually one of the legendary Gene Krupa's students, and has drumming influence from him.Long live Peter Criss!

i dont like him that much

TheDarksoul1881 1 year ago
Gene's brother Harry Witz on sound. (founded DB Sound in Chicago) Single headed toms. Shitty mics. Phase shifter effect. No gates...no compression. There sould be footage somewhere of this solo done in Japan...itz longer and Peter goes off on a different direction....very technical.
Gordfozzfoster 1 year ago
The problem is the audio. Aside from his snare, all the toms sound the same so it's difficult to appreciate this solo as much as it deserves. Peter is no Peart or Bonham, but when he was good he was REALLY good. Unfortunately when he sucked he REALLY sucked(Largo 79).

fyrifan 1 year ago
@fyrifan - Funny you say that, because most rock drummers don't have the groove, dynamics, feel and general ability to play jazz. I like a rock drummer as much as anyone, but jazz is incredibly technique oriented.

RIP Peter.

Lehamic 1 year ago
@Lehamic It took me 30 minutes to stop laughing enough to type this. Mickey Dolenz lives!!! In the words of Jim Rome.Epic! That is the funniest shit I've heard in years. I've been a Kiss fan since 74 and 7 years old and thought he sounded good on their studio albums but his solos were awful. I remember thinking the drum set I made from Baskin Robbins ice cream containers and my moms pots and pans sound better. I have never understood why anyone would allow that noise to be released on an album.
rockluvr77 7 months ago
@rockluvr77 The kit sounds terrible. The tone of it is just awful. I don't understand why Peter Criss gets so much praise. He doesn't do anything good. There are so many better drummers that are better that don't get half as much praise.

@MrSkulleyes when did peter criss die?!?!?! i didnt know!
mrwasanisong 1 year ago
@mrwasanisong

Dude, Peter ain't dead. I won't believe you until I can read it in the news or a website that tells that he is dead.

Who cares if you believe me or not? Peter Criss is dead. He died from a combination of bad cat makeup and a lack of drumming skills. It hasn't been covered in the news because nobody cares.
