  • I'm singing this song in a choir and it's cool!!

  • The Mens choir I'm part of doing this song as the song we use when we walk into the Church and after reading the music and watching this video I have become addicted to Anuna! Thank You for such good music.

  • This is chilling. Wish the Latin were better pronounced.

  • @Tuillyy Is it chilling because you don't think the Latin is correct?

May I say that your comment is congratulatory and pompously snobbish simultaneously. Well done! That is a new one on me. Might I direct you to some equally pompous comments on our "Gaudete" video.

Rather than repeat the uninteresting dialogue here that I had there with people with your obviously superior expertise, I would suggest that you read those. I have a huge slice of chocolate cake that I would rather eat.

  • @brezairola Wow. You took that comment completely the wrong way, and I don't really understand why. I meant chilling in that it is hauntingly beautiful and gave me chills. If you took a moment to see that I liked the video and added it to a playlist you might have seen that I am a student of latin, and I was wishing that I could hear the individual words more clearly, so that I could learn the song and maybe even sing along. I believe I used the wrong word- enunciated is what I actually meant.

  • @Tuillyy Well, then you are the kind of person we like commenting on our videos. Intelligent, unsnobbish, unbiased and kind of brilliant. I know this comment makes me seem shallow and manipulative. I am, so that is fine too.

  • @brezairola Fair enough :D

  • @brezairola So as a redo of my comment:

"This is hauntingly beautiful. I wish I could hear the Latin more clearly (though that's hard to do with a choral piece) so that I could further my education."

  • @Tuillyy Brilliant! More please.

  • @brezairola Also, as a student of Latin, I know that although there are proposed and widely accepted pronunciations, as it is dead we do not know positively what the Romans would have sounded like. I personally go by Wheelock/Lafleur's standard.

  • @Tuillyy I am weeping here...

  • this is my favorite anuna song,so haunting and beautiful. Wish i could be apart of that choir!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • i know latin and i have been taking it for like 6 years and im in 9th grade

  • By a minute and a half into this, starts feeling frenziedly bewitching.

  • Are any of them actually religious?

  • Świetne wykonanie.

  • its not that low mi advanced chours sings this your to low u dim wits

  • God...I would give anything to be a part of this world of music. Choral music is, in my opinion, the best expression of music on the earth, and there is NO piece performed by Anuna that I do not consider exceptional. Their music is genius, timeless, and inspiring. You are a musical mastermind, Mr. McGlynn. Thank you so very much for the amazing works of art that you contribute to a world that is in definite need of them.

  • Oh. THIS is what an eargasm feels like.

  • @PearlPieceShippuden: Thank you!!! :)

  • @brezairola Wow. Okay. Sorry if my question caused offense. I will rephrase. Though I like this song very much, I have no idea what the lyrics mean. Could someone who does know be kind enough to post a translation? Please? Thank you in advance. Sheesh.

  • Does anyone know what the words mean?

  • @tmej Yes. Lots of people do.

  • @brezairola Hahhahahahahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahahahhaha lol

  • @tmej In the midst of life we are in death What helper do we seek except you, oh Lord You who for our sins Chorus: Holy God, holy and powerful Oh holy compassionate savior Do not give us over to the harshness of death In you our fathers placed their hopes They placed their hopes and you freed them (Chorus 2x) In the midst of life we are in death
  • @tmej

Hi,here is the translation "In the midst of life we are in death. What helper do we seek except you, oh Lord

    You who for our sins

(Chorus)Holy God, holy and powerful Oh holy compassionate savior Do not give us over to the harshness of death In you our fathers placed their hopes .They placed their hopes and you freed them.

I think it is a very beautiful song....friendly greetings

    Siggy

  • @tmej In the midst of life we are in death

what helper do we seek except you, oj lord

    you who for our sins

    holly god, holy and powerful

    o holy compassionate savior

do not give us over to the harshness of death

in you, our fathers placed their hopes

they placed their hopes and you feed them

  • @tmej Something about "in the middle of life we are in death"... I know sancte Deus is Holy God.

  • @tmej

In the midst of life we are in death

What helper do we seek except you, O Lord

    You who for our sins

    Holy God, holy and powerful

    O holy compassionate saviour

Do not give us over to the harshness of death

In you, our fathers placed their hopes

They placed their hopes and you freed them

    If that answers your question.

  • Очаровательно, превосходно, великолепно.

  • @mrJudgeEagle Спасибо! Мы стараемся ...

  • a beautiful, convicting Latin text set to an equally beautiful and haunting melody. It gives chills to anyone who listens...

  • Sensationell!!!!!

  • im being completely honest when i say this, i have had dinner with these people.

  • I close my eyes and it makes me feel like I'm inside a 12th Century cathedral surrounded by peasants, lords, and knights in armor. The monks singing, and the smell of incense and candles permeating everywhere. Pure Medieval feeling!

  • holy cow these guys are amazing

  • Saw this performed in Christchurch Cathedral, Dublin with Clannad - sent shivers down my spine. First experience of Anuna was during the Riverdance performance. Did wonder myself about the "missing line"

  • Beautiful. Anuna at their finest. The entire singing along with the drum and solemn marching was phenomenal.

  • Comment removed

  • Absolutly the beautifulest song I've heard yet in my LIFE!!!!!

  • where would you get the download for anuna

  • @zacharyenator

    Available from anuna.ie or iTunes.

  • Saw you guys in Mallow Co.Cork yesterday and was blown away, now it wasn't my first concert adn i did miss some of my old favourites, songs and members but still... well done. bravo!! keep it up

  • Whoa. That's all I can say.

My school's select choir is doing this song, and it's going to sound just amazing!

  • I really do love this piece. My high school Concert Choir did this processional (very well, I might add) for a concert once. I almost got the solo part. <<[insert ego here]

  • wonderful male voices! and female too :))

  • wonderful male voices!

  • this band should have more visibility, they deserve it.

  • MEDIA VITA (Antiga Antifona Cristã) Media vita in morte sumus Quem quaerimus ad iutorem niste te, Domine? Qui pro peccatis nostris Sancte Deus, sancte fortis Sancte misericor salvator Amare mortis ne tradas nos In te speraverunt patres nostris Speraverunt et liberasti eos Media vita in morte sumus
  • Historical Irish dialect? Did you fail Western Civ? Actually, Liturgical Latin, beautifully sung. Let's not wander into a discussion on proper pronunciation. No one knows for sure but a gaggle of dead Romans. Chorally speaking, this is brilliant, purposed work. I think the Medieval Church would approve of the missing phrase, since Mass said in Latin seemed aimed at ensuring that peasants would sit through Mass dazed and dozing off. Like now. Don't argue. I'm old. I was there.

  • Historical irish dialect

  • @ajaykeer23939 no. Latin. Badly pronounced.

  • @brezairola yu've have to kidding me, yes it is Latin, but they have been singing it for quit some time and it sounds good to me

  • Comment removed

  • @brezairola Why badly? I had no problem with noticing the language nor with hearing out words though I know literally several latin expressions.

  • @brezairola no this is pronounced really good

  • @brezairola And of course we all know that sung language mirrors that of spoken language perfectly. Seriously, what do you hope to accomplish with this kind of valueless critiquing? Are you a first year student of Latin whose tiny little ego needs such boosting that you're willing to sling your feces around like a hyperactive spider monkey just for the pure pleasure of seeing others wince? What's your motivation?

  • @livinginthepast3 The statement made for that response was that it was an historical Irish dialect, so I said no. Then I said Latin, which it is, and then I said badly pronounced - If one believes that singing a dead language in the dialect of modern Hiberno-English circa 1994, then it is correctly pronounced. Otherwise it isn't. So what I said simply refuted an incorrect statement. I am Irish, and this is the way we all talk. We enjoy it. I got an F in Latin and its "faeces".

  • michael's voice is so beautiful. he looks so young, too

  • @twilightcrazy428 I know

  • He looks so young!

  • I was searching medieval music and found this now I have listened this maybe 10 times or more :)

  • THIS IS AMAZING. I've been listening to this song for like more than an hour now,

and still can't get enough of it!! :-)

    @ImaginaryNightshade

    @AutumnHippie

gelukkig, er bestaan dus nog meer Nederlanders die deze muziek kunnen waarderen :-)

  • i like this one a lot, sounds like Chanticleer but better.

  • This song just makes my toes curl. Every single time. *happy sigh*

  • I'm not religous.. but this song is more beautiful then ever..in english i don't think so lol

  • This solo is really amazing. Can't believe this voice control! (Is that even a correct thing to say in English? Anyway; ik vind het echt supermooi!)

  • In this song and in much of Anuna's music, one hears Christian texts or elements, but a wonderful, pre-Christian Pagan "feel" is there too.

  • Michael sounds very different here, in a good way. His voice so much deeper and more powerful (usually its more gentle). Absolutely beautiful.

And he looks quite lovely here!

  • This is magnificent. I truly love this arrangement and it's sung so beautifully.

  • @HatakeKakashi1002 nothing can be more beautiful than when the full Anuna Chamber Choir sings as a whole!

  • this is a testament of the beauty and power of the human voice. my fave from anuna(and thats saying something, cuz pretty much everything i have heard is great)...........

  • They are a specialist group that performs very powerful music, Even though I'm an old rock lover I can listen to this all day. Music is judged by some of us by its power, A Gary Moore solo , Scorpions performing with a full orchestra, Frank Marino and Mahogany rush , its all about the projected power ,

  • Completely agree.

  • Exactly my view - I would only add my fav Apocalyptica

  • They're very, very good.

  • there good

  • Amazing. I just stumbled over Anuna, coming from the stuff of neo-pagan formation Omnia, and I didn't really expect something that brilliant. I guess, I'm in love. Thanks for providing.

  • I found anuna by chance, and everything I have heard has been awsome.

  • das klingt richtig geil,, wirklich gut ;)

  • Just great!

  • This is my favorite song from Anuna.I have all their albums

  • I like this. Interesting.

  • Beautiful...

  • "In the fullness of the life we are dead. To whom do we look for as our help but to You, Lord? Who because of our sins is angry."

Correct me if I am wrong, but after looking up the translation, it sounds more like the song is about the promise of life after death, not just death itself.

  • This is great but I don't understand why don't they finish the phrase:

Qui pro peccatis nostris... (iuste irasceris)?

  • Utter stupidity I'm afraid. The text on the bit of paper I set this from was missing that line. You are the first person to notice in 16 years...

  • @brezairola

I'm a bit curious. You said the bit of paper you "set" this from. Do you mean that you wrote this or found the original lyrics to the chant?

  • @brezairola It's because they don't teach it in schools or celebrate the Latin Mass any more. Massive shame.

  • @brezairola It really isn't missing text, its ment to leave you open >.>

  • @sora1093 Thank you. You are very kind and I really appreciate your comment. But it is like saying "Mary, put the cat."

  • @brezairola Mary, put the cat. And don't forget the. I'm going to my.

I think you invented a new kind of minimal language.

  • 10 Century

"Deliver us oh Lord, from the fury of the Northmen!"

  • Anuna's performance of this chant is amazing. When I listen to it, I feel the tension being released from my body. Doesn't matter that the subject is death... Gorgeous!

  • my teacher used to preform with them

  • Breathtaking.

  • Great!!!!

  • I recognize some of these members from the original Riverdance...did all of the members perform with that show, or select?

  • fantastic ! !

  • Cool!

  • Michael is so awesome!!! :D ...love this song!!! When I listen to these songs it makes me wish I could sing baritone....or bass! :D lol

  • Hope they come to Brazil some day! Love Anúna!

  • Whoa..... 0.0

  • bought the song off of iTunes. We hope your kids like steak dinners. :)

  • Katie McMahon, love her! She's so amazing!

  • This is nice video78842974

  • mmm. Love it. I wish I could sing this in chorus. But this kind of music is not as popular, now. ...We're singing Bohemian Rhapsody. haha

  • It hasn't been popular ever. I suspect that it never will be.

  • You never know ... the same person who invented the solar-powered flashlight (yes it exists) might have said that.... but it works, right? haha just kidding. but really you never know, classical music has already gotten this far... who says it wont go farther (or futher .. which is it?)

  • Farther.

  • No, further. Farther is for literal usage, relating to distance. For metaphorical use, as in "how far" classical music will go, you use "further".

  • Lmao!...awesome...

  • it's not classical music!!!!!!!!

it sounds more religiously orientatied, when was the last time you heard a classical piece with a bodhran pulsating throughout the refrain of the piece?!! It seems also to be more centred on folk elements. The modal characteristics give this away.

If I had to categorize it into a genre, it world have to be 'commercially accessible modal chant celtic music"!!!!

  • It has nothing to do with folk music - rather it is influenced by the concept of sprung rhythm in chant. Chant is modal in its essence and was around before most folk music. It was not recorded to be commercial. The word celtic had no currency in 1993, and if it was accessible it would be popular, and it is not. It is music however, so well done in getting one bit correct and sure isn't that all we can hope for in life.

  • @jan1365 @jan1365 Absolutely agree with brezaiirola on this. This is a medieval chant and, actually medieval sacred music is widely considered Classical music, even if it is not as known as the later movements of Classical music.

  • Actually, the sound and technique of the choir is that of a amazingly Classical-trained one (specialised in ancient music, of course, it doesn't sound the same as a normal Classical Choir). And Micheal McGlynn's vocal skills are very impressive too, even for Classical music standards, and he's got an amazing voice.

  • @jan1365 thats what it is

  • One of my favorite tracks from Anúna.. :-) Isn't it time for another album? :-)

  • My goodness, what a brilliant idea. Hold on, I have one here. Yes - it was under the desk where I dropped it, so will release it next month. Thank you for the timely reminder!

  • It was not my intent to show any disrespect. As a composer and classical singer myself, I certainly know how time consuming recording projects can be. I suppose I simply enjoy the music so much that I can't help but hope to discover more all the time.. :-) Best wishes, and keep your sense of integrity that shines so clearly in every project you do.

  • Hah - yes - there is one due, well sort of new. 26 mins of new material, watch the skies : )

  • My name is Leonard Nimoy

  • no it isn't.

  • You'll find it is now kindly bugger off

  • omg I love you

  • @stengweed make up your mind stengweed (yes, I have been stalking u from ur comments at other videos!)

  • @unijade No this time I'm pretty sure I'm Leonard Nimoy

  • @stengweed Who is Leonard Nimoy?

  • @AutumnHippie He invented tippex

  • @AutumnHippie never mind stengweed's response, Leonard Nimoy played Spock in Star Trek. As far as I know, he had nothing to do with Tipp-Ex. The inventor of Tipp-Ex was Wolfgang Dabisch. (yes I just looked that up :p)

  • @ImaginaryNightshade OK, that makes sense... (Not! :P)

  • @ImaginaryNightshade Exactly!

  • We're singing this song in choir. I love it!!

  • Who is the guy playing the bodhran?

  • En el segundo verso tienes un error, en lugar de decir auditorem, dice en latin adjutorem o adiutorem lo que da un sentido más claro a la traducción

  • Media vita in morte sumus.

Quem quaerimus auditorem nisi te, Domine,

qui pro peccatis nostris iusta irasceris.

    Sancte, Deus, sancte fortis

    Sancte misericors Salvator,

    amarae morti ne tradas nos.

  • Much of Anuna's music - even obviously Christian pieces - have an underlying Pagan "feel" or sound to them. Not surprising, as much in Pagan Ireland became Christianised or adapted to the new religion. This song is exquisite: Christian lyrics combined with an of-the-earth melody and rhythm.

  • Majestic...

  • my claim to fame? Ian Curran teaches us choir, hes a lovely chap :)

  • This song was once forbidden by clergymen because the felling they have about it bein satanic. Foll they were...it is just...shivering!

  • the also add women which where replace by children.

  • We performing this on Sunday at our Depaul Community Chorus concert in Chicago. It is so beautiful! Great job, Anuna! And Michael M, you have a gorgeous voice.

  • Just close your eyes

  • Anuna kicks butt in choral music... I love this! :D

  • I like this version, but I prefer the original. It is an adaptation of a Gregorian chant. They add instruments (bodhran) and sing it with two voices and faster than the original. Lyrics in latin: Media vita in morte sumus Quem quaerimus ad iutorem nisi te, Domine? Qui pro peccatis nostris (Chorus) Sancte Deus, sancte fortis Sancte misericor salvator Amare mortis ne tradas nos In te speraverunt patres nostris Speraverunt et liberasti eos Chorus 2X Media vita in morte sumus
  • I love sheppard's version.

  • wonderful!!

    i love these guys!!

  • They take it so fast!

  • nice song my choir gonna sing this song :)

  • Mine to! I wonder if it's the same one... probably not.

  • is it in Latin???

  • Yes!

  • What does the song mean?

  • In the midst of life we are in death What helper do we seek except you, oh Lord You who for our sins (Chorus) Holy God, holy and powerful Oh holy compassionate savior Do not give us over to the harshness of death In you our fathers placed their hopes They placed their hopes and you freed them Chorus 2X In the midst of life we are in death
  • The first line is so true though..."in the midst of life we are in death".

We are so close to death, and we dont realize it. "Death is not the opposite of life; it exists as a part of them."

    Toru Watanabe

  • Thanks!

  • Amazing.

  • Origins**

  • i love Anuna. and i agree Micheals voice is amazing. whens there next album coming out??i hear 2009 in the U.S, i dont wanna wait that long though. geez this time i am definatly going to see you live, i missed my chance during Celtic Origing

  • Michael, your voice--and this music-- truly something special.

  • amazing. absolutely love it.

  • I've been to one of their performances, it was wonderful. I really love anuna <3

  • beautiful!!! I would have loved to be there

  • when was this done?.........

    everyone looks so young.....

  • 1995.

  • Amazing stuff; their expressions are really good for the moodiness of the piece...Anuna you guys are awesome!

  • My high school Chamber choir is working on this song right now and I love it!!!

I have to say that it really isn't that hard though...we got it pretty easily...

I love the way Anuna does it though!!Breath taking!!

  • We performed this song at college for choir, it was so difficult but so beautiful.

  • This piece is so stunning! I have listened to it countless times and it never ceases to amaze me. Anuna is so talented.

  • i luuvv this and their music!! reminds me alil of a funeral procession but its really kool ^__^

  • A choir I was in just recently did this, but it was SSA. Does anyone know if an SATB version is available in sheet music? Because I would love to introduce this to my school choir director.

  • Anuna sells sheet music for nearly everything they do, this inclluded, on their website.

They are marvelous, as are all of Mike McGlynn's compositions.
