  • The film is actually mistitled. The British RN warrant officer rank of master was responsible, basically, for the sailing of the ship and navigation, as Bligh was Cook's sailing master. There is one on the Surprise (he dies boarding Acheron, in the film) and so the captain does not have also to assume that role himself–as was the case with the Speedy and the Sophie. Aubrey was not master of the Surprise. Commanding brigs, Aubrey and Cochrane held the rank of lieutenant but had also to be master

  • There's only one style of music, which fits to a vdeo like that: Baroque.

  • LOL at the description of the video! Europe is goung down the drainage now...

  • Rule Britannia

  • holly shit ! …

bach's brandburg concerto was great and suited the theme perfectly… why do you have to replace it by this elevator music ???…

  • @vincent7520 If you want that version I will need your credit card # !

  • originally the hms rose

  • Question to nyBrit: what rank would come before post-captain in the Royal Navy c. 1812?

  • @dianewms There was a commander rank in the Royal navy during that period. Commanders were where a ship was too small to warrant a Captain but too big for a mere Lieutenant to command. Lots of Lieutenants became Commanders before being 'posted' Captain but there were some Lieutenants who went straight to Captain.

  • yo we gon do a full paint job on this mofo

then add some superfly 24" chrome wheels with spinners on it and it'll be off tha hook with fancy plasma screens in the captains cajute and on the subdeck so you can watch all the movies via TIVO my bro... all featuring a high definition ultra sky high fidelity sound system yo^^ this will be the neighborhood ride nigger xD

  • @snorlaxx1337911

    i lol'd hard (:

  • @nyBrit @develray The HMS Rose was always a frigate. The term 'post ship' was more usually applied to 20 and 22 gun classes. They are also the smallest ship a post captain can command, not the largest vessel non-commissioned officers could command.

@Squarerig There's a little more to it than that. A frigate was any ship-rigged vessel that carried between 24 and 44 guns, with the primary battery on one deck.

  • She is a full-rigged ship. That is square rigged on all three masts. Not a Brig-two masted,square-rigged vessel!Frigate was a somewhat elastic term in the eighteenth century;a man o' war,a ship of the line would also be square-rigged on all three masts-thus it was merely a question of size/displacement.

  • wow i wish i was on that ship! i would be sailing out to open sea and i would blow up the black pearl!

  • Looks like a big version of the pirate ship I was on!

  • hehe how did they fund this?

  • I have seen master and commander but i was under the impresion that it was not a brig but a royal Brig of war. Please correct me if i am wrong as i realy do enjoy classic sailing vessels. Send back a message filled with as much stuff about this ship as you can so i can refrence it with my freinds.

  • @develray Classic sailing vessels are a delight. Here in New Zealand a replica of Captain Cook's "Endeavour" was built some years ago. Not sure where it is now. One correction - "Surprise" is not a brig. A brig has only two masts. This vessel has a full ship rig and, as a matter of personal opinion, seems to have more elegant lines than the vessel used in the Hornblower TV series, especially around the stern. But I'd be happy to see either down under.

  • @littmann03 dont count on it i plan to sink them both before the northeasterlys change you scallywag. you better pray the "Endeavour" stays outta our oceans or it will be curtains for her as well, davey jones locker i says i do!!!!!

  • @develray The ship was built as HMS ROSE (24) in Nova Scotia in 1970. It is a recreation of 1750's "Post Ship" not a frigate. A post ship was the largest vessel able to be captain by a non-commissioned officer and is more akin-ed to a sloop-of-war than a brig. A brig of war usually had an open deck, where as a Post Ship had an enclosed deck.

    .

  • Such a beautiful ship!

  • hms victory i live 1.74 miles from her

  • the HMS Suprise has the vertical bracing needed to prevent the "hogging" issue.

  • @caseums123 All ships hog a little. This replica does not have the diagonal bracing, and actually hogs about 2 feet, as of a few months ago when we last had her out of the water.

  • You guys should watch Hornblower, and Sharpe.

  • @LordWellington15 i watch both of them, i absolutly love sharpe ^^

  • @LordWellington15

Agreed. And when it comes to the sailing navy I'd recommend the Drinkwater novels by Richard Woodman and the Ramage series by Dudley Pope. Excellent reads for fans of naval fiction, packed with relevant detail, but without all the extra baggage that Patrick O' Brian loaded into his Aubrey novels, however well crafted they may be.

  • Hail to you, O'Brian

  • Very nice video! I participated as crew on the ship back when it was still the "Rose" and part of the History at Sea program.

Brings back so many great memories!!

  • she was built in Munengurg, i live only a hour or so away from there

  • A visual delight! With our technology now, why can't we make more sailing ships?

  • I always think the same, they are so pracious, those big cruise ships, are so...* you know, sometimes, i wish i lived in that time!

  • Wow what a beatiful ship! And exactly as depicted in Sid Meier's Pirates! by the way.. I love that game...

  • such a beautiful ship!!, Hail the Surprise! Hail Lucky Jack, and hail tall sky!! .X

  • TallSky is an Artist..

  • You did real good on this one Jim. Master and Commander was one of my favorite films. I have the video. She looks to have a steel hull.

  • Thanks, John. The 2003 film is also one of my favorites.

  • Steel hull?, theres no such thing in ships of that period.

  • @TallSky Read the books! Patrick O'brian wrote 20+ books in the Aubrey Maturin series. They are outstanding - far better than the movie (but the book almost always is).

Thanks for the video, helps to give perspective after reading the books.

  • She's wood, through and through. Though some of it is beginning to show its age, and we can only hide so much with paint.

I can also say: studdingsails this year!

  • @Auggie56 Nope, not a steel hull, it is wood, although it is fitted with an engine and props. Check out the San Diego Maritime Museum's website for more footage of the HMS Surprise.

  • The original ships from that era had copper plating over the hull.
