In my opinion analog is over rated. There's no way an established engineer is going to say that the digital world is better since they're charging people what they're charging. They would literally be taking the money that they rely on to provide for themselves and their families right out of there pockets. Dont bite the hand that feeds you. All the old school engineers know this and they've been in the game long enough to know that this business is a fragile business thats all about trends.
@Marcderx7 yeah but most of them don't need the job anymore, they are rich by now, so whats the point of discrediting digital. You gotta consider the fact that they have been doing this for years and years, they know whats good imho.
Rich by now? Engineering is a for hire gig and unless your in hip hop I don't think "rich" is exactly how I would describe any engineer. Not to say that they're not well off. But I'd be my top dollar that their livelihood depends strictly on the gigs to come and they're not jeopardizing their future for some "talented" young engineer who waiving a digital flag. Plus, technology is a scary thing. Look at how the music business has crumbled, musically and financially, because of digital era.
Torrent discography of any major artist, I think my point is more than proven. I don't disagree that analog is superior, but I think this is much more of a business thing than anything else. The labels enforced ridiculous laws against piracy once they say the profits being jeopardized, all to maintain that bottom line. Engineers are just doing the same. I can mix and master on my system which, by the way, is not worth a mortgage. Not even close. And that goes for anyone.
@DarioLosso69 No professional that respect himself will discrediting digital, but of course, a professional will never tell you that he can do a professional sounding, radio ready mixing and mastering with just a microphone a decent sound card and software(but its possible!),also no stupid wannabe rockie, novice, (even with all the Abbey Road studios equipment or the best digital/analog whatever console in the world) will be able to do a decent prod, its not just about hardware, but knowledge..
i've been is so many professional studios that have tossed out al their analog gear and when digital. the reason they said is because the advancement in technology has just opened up more versatile options for everything from tracking to mastering. i love analog and what it did for the industry but digital is moving in and its not going anywhere
SSL and Neve define the industry standard until now. Digital Consoles are still at its infancy IMO and they can barely imitate the warm sound of a real analog console.
I totally disagree. Digital consoles have been around for the best part of 20 years and sonically are every bit as good as analogue. The number of albums mixed in the box with the aid of summing amps etc is legion. The audio schools buy the old school desks in cos they know they'll impress kids enough to part with a few thousand dollars so they can play at being record producer for a couple of years. Nothing wrong with that - nobodies making money out of selling records now anyway
then how come most producers still track and mix on analogue Neve and SSLs with Studer tape decks? I'm not gonna start an Analog vs Digital debate here but face it. most people in the industry are reluctant to scrap their analog gear and go digital.
Because - a. Its what they're used to, b. They spent a fortune amassing gear and want to get their moneys worth and c. Sitting behind a big desk makes them feel important. Above all they're dead scared that some kid in his bedroom with 1k's worth of equipment stands a reasonable chance of making a better record than they can. Sound ridiculous? Thats how its going. Good thing too. Its not the kit that makes the music - its the person.
it' not really about the feeling of being important. aside from the unique audio signatures that analog consoles have, it's the immediacy of having a one knob per function that makes mixing on 72-96-channel desks better. most people would rather work on the music than navigating through drop down menus and dialog boxes.
Thats a fair point, but just because you're dealing with software doesnt mean you're not working on the music. Its a small price to pay on order to gain the recall capabilities and flexibilty of a computer system, not to mention the savings you make on maintenance and initial outlay. So the only reason you have left for using large format analogue desks are sonic - and high end digital systems compete very favourably for a fraction of the cost. Sorry, these old behemoths have had their day.
Hmm...i dont know why people keep doing this...analog DOES make your sound warmer because it goes through more electrical phases like the making of a vinyl.
It doesn't mean it is BETTER or WORSE.
This is just taste and for everybody to bitch about it is not that useful.
I love analog it's a sound that just has more feeling (for me).
But there is nothing wrong with digital, love it aswell.
@abcdnubs Thats a myth, Im sure waves L2 or L3 plugins beats any analog maximizer still with a super clear warm sound, inside a pro sequencer like Sonar or Pro tools, standalone digital mixers have lots of similar modeling DSP
@carlosaglez1 That's what I've been wondering: is it an objective fact that these behemoths generate a much better warm sound, or have we reached an era where they're obsolete; cuz it would be a huge waste of money and space if there were plug ins that could do exactly what these consoles do, and better. They were extremely necessary back in the day, but I wonder if they're needed now with the wealth of software available. Someone clear this up?
@SuperGlaurung They're not obsolete, to have one of this mixer its a GREAT thing, and if you are a engineering or musician with enough technical knowledge, and of course, THE MONEY, buy one, BUT believe me, you don't needed..I mean you can go cheaper and still get the same Pro quality in the comfortable ambient of a DAW like Cubase, Sonar, Logic, Pro tools and the great plug-ins out there(DX,VST etc) , of course if you need to record large bands/orquestal music you'll need a big console
sweet. holy shit thats a LOT of controls. hehe. I am in high school and I want to pursue a career in the recording arts as well as soundboard mixing and stuff like that. Do you have any reccommendations on anything or tips for me? t=if so please send me a message. Greatly appreciated! THANKS! btw nice studio!
This is a shot from the SAE Amsterdam, to be honest I heard little to no good stories about the other schools and as far as i'm concerned SAE Amsterdam looks like one of the best places to learn out of all the locations (did my audio course there too)
I just finished SAE in Byron Bay..... waste of money, waste of time !!!!!!! SAE is the true definition of 'Organized Crime' . Everyone leaves SAE very unsatisfied.
Hi man. I'm studying Audio Engineering at SAE Athens, and I haven't had any complaints about SAE yet.. Why do you think it's an "organized crime" ? I'd be grateful if you'd give me information because I am a new student at SAE.
Hey! My first thought was, it very looks like a sae studio! I´m on the sae in berlin and I can say it´s worth to pay the fee!
If you´re really ambitious and motivate than it can be more than profitable! yea, it cost a lot, but in relation with the possibilities you have it´s "nothing"!
Dude, i´m no naive dumb freak, but in the end you have the opportunity to work with the most common mixing desks and so on.

@Apotheosis12 'Electrical phases'? What on earth are you talking about?
fishybishbash 1 year ago
Hahaha,
I mean that it goes through a lot of electric devices...the process of making a vinyl.
You know what i mean?
All those devices give a certain HD(harmonic distortion) to the process and that's what makes it warm.
:)
