  • whow what an athlete led for 800 meters and an Irish one, two. Where did the tradition of Irish indoor runners go like Coughlan, Flynn, O' Sullivan and runners like O'Mara, and O'Donavan they were the Golden days of Irish indoor athletics. I suppose the smame could be said of The Britsih 800m and 1500m outdoor athletes. Is it because the Africans (Morrocons, Kenyans and Etheopians have taken over that mantle ?

There has been the odd athlete through like Sonia O' Sullivan and C. Mc Kiernan

  • whow what an athlete led for 800 meters and an Irish one, two

  • @niall29 he was always outclassed by Walker, Coe and Ovett outdoors. He didn't have the pure speed over the last 300m. Still one of the greats though and even ran sub 4:00 at the age of 40!!!

  • great days for ireland..thanks eamonn

  • Coughlan was dominant indoors, but not outdoors. They called him Chairman of the Boards for all his wins in Madison Square Gardens on the small wooden indoor track.

  • @dean2663 He was unlucky with injuries but won the world outdoors in 83, and naivety and not talent prevented 2 serious assaults on olympic gold.

  • Q What do 7 white guys do in a mile race?

    A Chase the black dude.

  • Never seen any of his indoor races. I still remember watching the 5,000 metres World championship in Helsinki in 83 as a kid. Watched it in the Blue lion pub on Parnell street in Dublin with my father. Galway were playing Donegal in the All- Ireland football semi final the same day. Galway won, only to get bet by Dublin's dirty dozen team a few weeks later in the final.

  • What a legend! I never tire of watching this race.

  • I remember this race. I have this on VHS as well as a gang of races from the 80s and 90s. Need to transfer them onto dvd

  • lol no black people that time

  • holy shit that was sick!

  • Hats off to Coghlan, but I still think Steve Scott is the coolest. He always makes it interesting and ran sub-4 over 100 times!

  • We need to see more of Coughlan. Some of his best stuff was done indoors and pior to utube ect. If anyone had their head screwed on the should bring out a Couglan DVD the best of . He was one fast whore , he could kick on a six pence.

  • hes not even breathing hard hah

  • I wrote "FORTY-NINE", and I meant "FORTY-ONE".

He was 41, not 49. Sorry.

  • Your times and ages are all impressive. One thing:

Eamonn Coughlan broke 4:00 at the age of FORTY-NINE!

  • go on eamonn glad your irish

  • Organizedc, I was also present for this race back in 1983 at age 14 with my brother - but up in the stands!

What a day it was and what a treat to see it again (but first time on TV) after all these years. Coghlan was always a hero to me.

    Thanks for again for posting.

  • @AndrewOdom i would see Eamonn run at Villanova and the Penn Relays, and since this time have regularly cited him as my hero too. It´s not just his talent as a runner it´s his great attitude that makes him.

  • Coughlan is legend. Any footage of him winning the 5000 world outdoors?

  • Comment removed

  • I ran a 4:24 mile when I was 16, i'm now 27 and I probably couldn't break 5:00. I'm relatively fit and strongly considering getting back into athletics. Cross country season coming up, should be fun :)

Coughlan is a Legend! Meet him and he is sound out! :)

  • 16 yers old- 5:30

  • My best is 4.10, but I was only 21. Coghlan's best distance was probably 3,000, like Thomas Wessinghage and John Walker. Coe, Ovett and Cram were too quick.

  • 14 years old 5:48

  • damn i barely run a 4:55 man im slow compared to them...

  • If you really run a 4:55, that's pretty fast even for people who compete.

  • My mile is 7:04

  • 5:43

  • wow, i run a 5:49 mile. 2 min. better than me

  • WAT? I RUN A 23 minute mile!

  • Damn ur slow!!!

    (cagarBS)

  • Actually, my best mile time is 6:28, but I just wanted to express how shocked I was at a 3:49 mile.

  • sorry dude

  • Coughlan was simply the greatest middle distance runner from Ireland! The guy had it all! I´ve met him a few times and the last time was on a cold November Sunday morning in Kensington Park,London in 2001. He still looked the biz in his traning gear!

  • and i get excited about a sub 6 minute mile

    LOL

    but i do distance

  • I grew up about 3 streets from Eamonn Coghlan. He had the same name as me saw loved him when I was about 4 years old. He raw past us once when we were playing in the street and we were messing around and I shouted at him. Someone said it was him so we went to his mothers house and got his autograph.

  • eamons got a book out now....reviews are great.great runner up against some drug users,he said this in an interview i heard a couple of weeks ago

  • Its just that epo was easier to mask back then

I know Eamon was clean! But east bloc back then and even today - epo city!

  • i was named after Eamonn Coughlin this is so cool=)

  • coughlin was the man those days we need another eamon coughlin what a guy..great athleate

  • Why does everyone say that these people are dopers?! It's obvious that they're not, because otherwise they wouldn't be allowed to compete.

  • dopers!

  • Fuckin awesome!!

  • amazing

  • they all juice up!

  • Bullshit. Coghlan for one never took drugs in his life.

  • King of the Boards! The Irish owned the boards at this time winning the first World 4x4 miler relay. Eamon Coughlan, Ray Flynn, Marcus O`Sullivan and I think Frank O`Mara!

  • wow what a badass

  • This record lasted for 14 years, and is still the 2nd fastest of all time and is still, 25 years on, a European Record. LEGEND!

  • One of the greatest mile races ever--as good as a 3:43 by Hicham on an outdoor track with EPO in his bloodstream

  • That is an outrageous slanderous comment you have just made about Hichem.

  • goooooo dad!!! :)

  • whoa, thats crazy, hes great.

are you related to another Eamonn Coghlan in 9th grade that does track?

  • um no, we live in ireland now!

  • um no, we live in ireland now, dont think hes a relation!

  • Eamon is an Irish hero. His son John is a promising young athlete.

  • thanks for posting 1983 championships 5k would be great too

  • I remember watching this race at the Meadowlands. Eamonn is a great guy and a great man. I ran against him in college, I was always honored when he would remember me when he would see me years later.

  • Still the only man ever to do it!

I've just posted two videos of Eamonn to Google Video...

  • Not so. El G has gone down to 3:48 a few years before he won his Olympic Gold.

  • Confusing this with his over-40s sub-4:00 mile :(.

  • Yes, Steamin' E-man still the only one under 4:00 for age 40 and over. Looks like he'll have this distinction for a long time to come. I remember Marcus O'Sullivan recalling that Eamonn went through torture to accomplish this with physio sessions daily to get his aging body ready for the next day's training.

  • That was a great night, Eamonn is such a nice guy too

  • This just made my day! Thanks.

  • This video kicks ass. thanks hoyamike.

  • That would be great! Ive been looking for Sonia videos for a long time but unfortunately they are very hard to get hold of!

  • Fantastic video, do you have any other videos of irish runners, such as Sonia O'Sullivan or John Treacy?

  • Yes I do... I will have to cut them to DVD but will get them up here when I can.

  • @hoyamike Ok, you've had 4 years.....

  • thank you so much for uploading this video. Ireland FTW
