my grandpa bought a versatile 145 in 1971 and it is still being used by my uncles' on black locus farms north of stanton michigan. it was repowered with a 210hp v8 cat engine in it back in the 80's. my uncles' also have a versatile 850.
my grandpa used to have a 145 then he traded it and got a 1370. Its still one the farm and was working untill water got in the oil. Now we're taking parts off so our loader (which is also a 1370) may continue to live. And a another funny thing is that i'm going to an auction tomorrow which a 145 on the sale bill. might have to get
The 4366 is a loud thing, ain't it? My neighbor had one, you could always tell when that thing was scratching around...The Detroit always seemed that it rev'ed twice has high as other motors.
Oh, and I sure think the Case's had more power than they claimed...they seem to pull a hell of alot more than they should be able to!
The IHC 4366 is pulling a 35' Case (bush hog) cult. The Versitile 145 is pulling a 27' Cockshut cult and the Case 1370 is pulling a 28' Alice Chalmers cult.
Well, the main thing might be the pins where the tractor swivels at. They will wear plus wearing the holes they sit in. Once this happens the tractor will shake because the drive shaft near the lower pin will not run smooth. It will feel like u-joints are wore out causing a shaking problem. Worse when turning left or right.
Tranny is a truck transmission. These have been known to have problems. Be sure you keep that HYD oil level up. Check it at front dif where you will see a bolt plug.
We've rebuilt the fuel pump twice, $1000 a pop. This could be any tractor though.
We find it a rough for a 4x4 tractor. Maybe the 18-34's we have on, larger tires may be better.
Now, the hubs. Worst design ever. The axels will spin in those hubs cos the bolts break. $40 a bolt, 2 per hub. Used hubs run about $600. Hub only gets damaged if you don't catch it in time. Always look for a broken bolt on them.
Turbo has been good. HYD pump ok. Rad works well. Cab is too small.
Tractor is not bad on fuel, has about 120 gal tank. Drawbar horse power is at 163 and it pulls our equipment pretty good....35' & 32' deep til cults. 32' IHC discers are no problem.
I mentioned the HYD oil level earlier. On our HYD pump a hose went and it lost most of the oil quickly. A hired man was running it and kept going.... hmmm, ahhhh. Front differential seized up and cost me $7,500 to fix.
The DT-466 isn't a bad engine and is very reasonable in cost to rebuild if you have to do it.
A few fuses will go. Remove the two bolts on the metal plate under the dash to replace. Biggest wire problem will be the lights, they will wear and touch metal.
Grease those swivel spindals in center of tractor (those pins). Lots of u-joints too, grease em. The coolent overflow jug will crack and break..... all the time, get use to it. I got tired of replacing it.
AC is almost a must, cos in most 4366 cabs no windows open. Problem is, it got too expensive to keep fixing. So we used the fans.
Bottom line is we bought the tractor in 1994 for $7,500. We knew it needed some things.
After the first 4 years I spent $20,000 over the original $7,500.
Rebuilt engine, replaced head, tranny, front dif, some drive shafts, u-joints, spline shafts to center HYD box, axel hubs, injector pump twice, alternator and starter.
Since 1998, no problems at all really. So in last 10 yrs, all has been well. Shows what can happen when you buy something cheap and run down.
The 1370 has been a great tractor for us. Very reliable and by far the better tractor than the 4366. You name it, that 4366 has had it fixed. Cost enough to keep that thing running.
Nope we never have driven the 4568, 4586 or 4786, all v8's.
This 145 has the Cummins 470-V8 .... 145's also came with the Cummins 504-V8.
Basicly these small Cummins V8 engines and the triple nickel (Cummins 555-V8) were not very reliable in these (145, 500, 555, 700) tractors. You just gotta love the sound when one of those cranks break....uh yep

Sorry, 4 bolts per hub, not 2.

Has the 1370 been a good tractor for you? Not many left in my little part of Ontario. There was a 4366 in my family though. Ever driven a 4368?

Put that little girl to work picking rocks. My first job at age 14 was picking rocks for my dad (by hand of course) making 50 cents per hour.

Case (Bush Hog) 35' Deep Tillage cultivator .... CCIL 30' DT .... Cockshut 27'
We also had a White 32' DT near by but it had a hyd cylinder problem so we used the 27' Cockshut.

The IH 4366 has the DT-466 diesel; the Versatile 145 uses a Cummins V8-185; and the Case 1370 uses the 8.3L turbo six (pre-Cummins, obviously).
