  • Roger has been a big influence on me and no one can reproduce the sound and effects he has made on the vocoder he was a true pioner

  • In the 80's this was HD

  • where is part 2 i cant find it

  • @TracyWadlington

Part two is named Roger Troutman & Ray Davis "I'm So Happy"

  • @TracyWadlington It is named Roger Troutman & Ray Davis "I'm So Happy"

  • awesome roger troutman 4 eva XP

  • Roger was good at what the hell he was doing period...

  • saw him perform this in worthing in i think 93! a truly great man whos touched the hearts of many

  • Composition to commemorate (1908) is still one of the best compositions of Roger T, why is there nothing to find on YOUTUBE???

  • A true master music producer working his magic! This late legend doesn't get enough credit for being one of the pioneers. RIP Roger Troutman;(

  • thank you so much for posting this video.

  • roger &the rest of zapp too are all incredibly talented. frm what ive heard from a few people who met roger that he was incredibly nice! this guy told me a story about how 1 year him and his kid (jim and matt) met roger at a concert & talked for a lil bit & sighned autographs for them. a few years later they went 2 anothr concert he had & they tried 2 talk to roger but the security guard said no, but roger said "hey! let them thru! that is jim and matthew and they are personal friends of mine!"

  • And Dial. LOL. RIP Roger you were the Shiza

  • Talkbox is old school

  • That Was AWESOME To See The LEGEND At Work. Thanks For Sharing ROGER With Us. ;-)))

  • ONLY Roger could have a song that sounds like a Streetfighter video game......Hiiiiiii-Yuken!!!!!! ha ha ha

  • someone missed the like button again

  • Auto tune? Nasty! Just when you thought new music couldn't get any worse. Though that crap is clearly trying to steal from Roger & Zapp, (most likely via West Coast Rap rather than directly) it's nowhere near worthy of a comparison. Roger is an ICON of Funk as far as I'm concerned.

  • Just got to agree with Mrinternet69

  • This is excellent behind the scenes of a pro. Thanks for posting!!

  • man... they dont make synthesizers like they use too!

  • i like how much dedication he put in his music

  • THIS SHOULD PUT ALL THAT TALK ABOUT AUTOTUNE TO REST. IT'S CALLED TALKBOX.

  • Dam that minimoog is serious with the talkbox

  • I love how it comes out perfectly mixed.

  • FUCK T-Pain

  • what is that big thing he keeps pressing

  • @syddiallo Its a track recorder... what Ricardo Bray is using is the control box for punching in the vocals Roger is working on at a certain section of the track.

    Mister Groove

  • Not his best song.

  • Thanks for sharing this with us. Roger is truly missed.

  • This is some nice footage in the studio....

  • Autotune is killing everything Roger worked and stood for. Destroy Autotune!!

  • hey, what did they use to sequence this music?

  • @owlwink, if your talking about what he recorded on,, it was all done on the 2" 24 track tape machine (Studer A800). Nothing but punch in, way before Bro-Tools (pro tools). I love his beat up minimoog!!!!!

  • THE MOST SAMPLED ARTIST IN HISTORY. RIP Roger Troutman

  • @bobbywinterz : James Brown probably has him beat though

  • what is the complete song called?

I searched for, but didnt find it.

    can anybody tell me?

  • The name of the song is "I'm So Happy"

there is a music video of the complete song in my other videos.

  • @HollywoodVisual Is there anymore of this video you will be uploaded?

  • iM sO hAPPY...

  • i have a copy of the song email me at kingseaton@yahoo.com

  • amazing.

  • Yep Roger used the Minimoog for a good portion of his career, although he used the DX100 in the last several years before his passing, I don't think he ever shied away from the Minimoog Analog synth

  • simply legendary...

  • damn look @ that dudes jerry-fro

  • Sky Hookin!

  • i know i'm just a 21year old young buck, but i grew up on Zapp & Roger troutmans music. i luv computer love and many more hits. it's been ten years since his death. i miss roger troutman. there was so much more for him to in the music business. Rest In Peace bro.

  • i'm about to be a 21 year old buck (in september) and i totally agree, he made some great music.

  • AMAZING!!!!

  • and i'll... and i'll... and i'll... and i'll keep sky hookin... and i'll... and i'll... god DAMN! i love music, but i've always hated recording because of shit like that! haha, it's awesome though 2 see how roger does it... He's Doin' It... My Goodness He's Doin' It!

  • LOLOL!!! As I was watching this, I was thinking the EXACT same thing! People have no clue how annoying making music can be.

  • hahaha! i'm glad somebody feels the same way, that shit can make you go crazy sometimes!

  • U gotta check out pt. 2 tho with Ray Davis. Just as harsh. His coment at 6:28 had me ROLLING!!! Not very nice, but funny as hell!

  • haaha hell yeah! amkin all these gay mother fuckers sound better, HAHA damn roger!

  • This was da real auto-tune king, T-Pain can go home, lol

  • this has nothing to do with autotune

  • Come On. This is NOT, I say again is NOT, AUTO-TUNE.!! Ppl get it right, here I'll make it simple for you..... Auto-Tune (What T-Pain uses) has No Tube, you use only a Mic and a computer, turn & click on some buttons to make that effect on your voice. Now The Talkbox (What the Legend Mr. Roger Troutman used, R.I.P.) has a Tube and does Not need a computer in order to be able to play it. They are NOT the same.! If I go into more detail than that... I know I will confuse you again.

  • @zapptech: who bloody cares! it all sounds the bloody same to us. Autotune/voicbox/talkbox...huh.

i love them. love them. love their stuff.

  • if you can't tell the difference between a vocoder and a talkbox then you should try to learn it. and maybe someday you'll be able to make a comment without looking like a complete idiot

  • to miggy221: luckily it sounds the same only to you. or sadly...

  • @ZappTech714

Either way he did pioneer the use of that 'sound'

  • AUTO TUNE? THESE NIGGAS IS CONFUSED! ITS CALLED A VOCODER.@ZappTech714

  • @Goyokiki Its NOT a Vocoder or Auto Tune (which in a sense are alot alike) Nothing but a microphone and a voice...

Roger was the master of the "Talk Box" ... which as you can see here has a tube that goes into your mouth and when spoke into is the pitch of the sound that comes out is controlled by the keys on the keyboard

  • @Goyokiki Vocoder? I thought it was a talk box. using electronic signals and voice waves..correct me if im wrong.

  • @ZappTech714 does it really matter its still voice altering. roger was a legend. but give tpain some credit he made changin your voice cool again and made some classics behind it. at least with his first 2 albums. and blame the industry for confusing everyone because they always say auto-tune is what he(roger) used. i knew better cuz i knw music and i knw my history but that doesn`t mean everyone else including ppl in the industry do too

  • @MSlilgangster89 It allowed people who can't sing or carry a tune - a new (altered) voice that they claim is their own. NOT! Be original and unencumbered by the technology. Roger was ahead of his time and innovative in his creativity. These days - all these wanna-be rappers just sample everything in sight. TPAIN and the rest of em.

  • he shouldn'tve been killed (by his own brother).

  • Right, the song's called "I'm So Happy - Kareem Abdul Jabbar tribute".

This whole video is only about 8 seconds of that song.

  • Comment removed

  • Looks like an old CAD condenser to me...

  • what the hell is sky hookin'?!

  • lol

  • Basketball, remember the sky hook shot...hmmmm

  • can't remember the name of guitar player with Roger, isn't that Ricardo ?

He toured with Zapp in Europe back in 89. Including Paris France. Thats when I met Roger / lester / Mark / Bart and Raymond "Ray" Davis. Great people. Super stars but above all warm human beings. Viva Catalpa Drive

  • "and dial" where's the coke? B\

  • he was saying "and i'll" as in "and i'll be sky hookin" lol.

  • sky hooking

  • Sky what? Sky lookin'?

What a legend. Who wears a suit to the studio?

  • And dial this guy Unkin.

  • sky hookin...was made for a basketball video...its a basketball shot...made famous by tall Centers...

  • Stevie Wonder introduced the talk box, But Roger truley mastered it. Great, Great, Musician!!.

  • wrooonnnnnngggg...Peter Drake used it in the 60s with his electric guitar...but good try though dude...

  • Alvino Rey used talkbox in late 30's. Look him up.

  • MOOG!!!!

  • THE OHIO OG!!! RIP ROGER!!!

  • waw his so perfectionist just for one phrase awesome !!!

  • Used to be you had to be. Now you can lay down a track once and then shift around your notes to your hearts content.

Auto-tune killed any semblance of musicianship left in pop vocals.

  • Thank you! Thank was Old School mate! Wicked video.

  • Imagine se o mestre tivesse o bendito ABLETON LIVE na mão...

  • Is there any where I can get the song, there recording? Is it on a cd or something?

  • I have it.

    Mister Groove!

  • fuckin tight. Zapp and Roger never got the credit they deserve

  • @Hold423 i wish i could thumbs you up 100x its exactly how i feel

  • talkbox or vocoder? is there a difference... mouth piece i guess

  • yeah there is a difference.I didnt know that at first either.Vocoder you can speak into a mic.you dont have to speak in the tube for a talk box.just move your mouth as your are saying the words.

  • i've never seen anyone actually working in the studio with a full suit on in my life.

  • jimmy jam terry lewis,la baby face ,quincy jones always wore suites in the studio.

  • jimmy and terry only wear suits when they"re on tv-- i ve seen them live in the studio many times. la and face too---they dress nice but not a full suit with the tie and all, all day--never. the 2nd(engineer) even had a sport jacket on.

  • he has a ghetto talkbox and it sounds good

  • its not a ghetto talkbox its the golden throat.

  • wow i can do this at home these days

  • No.

  • You could here the Moog drift.

  • I like that "I slept through that one" :) He just caught himself enjoying the sound for a second :) Kool.

  • Roger said these exact words:

Lester & I studied how the first company made one.

We studied what the parts where, & we built our own. So there's nobody to maintain it but us & it is very very difficult

    to maintain.

It's a constant headache! That's why I have two on stage so that I can switch if one breaks down.

And there's two mechanisms within each one. So it's definitely a problem.

  • Whats The Name Of The Song Hes Workin On In This Vid/????

  • I used to live in Cincinnati,Ohio. Roger lived in Hamilton. But I remember seeing him one time live.He had his guitar slung on him,and was playing the keyboard. I love the song Freedom, which was the 1st song I ever heard of his. Hihn Hurd Jr(Dr.Slam)is a good friend of mine. They(John and Roger, shared alot on and off stage. I have moved to N.C,but miss seeing John do his tribute to Roger. WE ALL MISS ROGER TROUTMAN

  • I wish he was still alive... I would have loved for him to produce my album... I see he's using a classic AKG Mic, and he really knows how to operate in the studio... Genius!

  • Thank You Everyone for your comments.

I had an unforgettable time of my life with Roger and he left an impression on me that I will always cherrish.

I think that Roger should be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. His pioneering of the vocoder opened the door for artisis like T-Pain and everyone else who uses the "auto-Tune" sound. Roger may not have been the first to use synthesized vocals but he certainly mastered it and brought the sound to millions.

  • wow, alot of work for one verse...

  • The more I watch this stuff I realize how under-rated Roger is. I put him up there with Prince's and Rick James' best stuff. If only everyone could have Prince's longevity.

  • Thanks for the video. It's fun to watch Roger create, not a lot of videos like this out there. What a professional.

  • I KNEW he used to use MiniMoog. I was confused to not see his DX. I guess that's what he used in the beginning.

Figures, the MiniMoog was another synth I was really looking into buying but fuck me, they're expensive. I like keeping it old school though.

  • TALKBOX, not vocoder

  • What isnt a vocoder, not sure if that is what this is in this video, but he is very famous for his use of the vocoder, he also did use the talkbox, and what T Pain and Lil Wayne use now is a variation of the Vocoder and is called a Autotune.

  • vocoder and talkbox are the same

  • vocoder and talkbox are NOT the same

  • yes they are about the same, not exactly, but they relate

  • vocoder processes a voice signal with a sytnh 'formant' - with talkbox you shape a synth with your mouth

  • yes, their still about the same just used different

  • vocoder talkblox aunotune are all different

  • they all sound alike to me at the end of the day

  • you don´t know nuthin bout vocoder, auto tune or talkbox ...and you act like you know everything ...please stop talkin about stuff you don´t know...don´t take it personal .

  • thats my opinion first off, I said, to ME.they all sound the same, its what I hear in my ear, not what you or anyone else hears, my OPINION, okay?, and you dont know what I know,................ sorry about that :)

  • okay if you got your own opinion bout something i respect that ..but you can´t say its night when its day ...or you can´t say that color is red in my opinion when that color is blue ...you know what i´m sayin´

  • ...especially in music ..all guitars ain´t the same or all pianos ain´t the same ...if your ears can not hear the difference then probably you don´t taste the difference between a good homemade pizza and a fastfood pizza for example ...so be openminded and try to hear the difference .. ;)

  • Yea, I understand what your saying,I'll go and hear them again, and see the difference ;)

  • it's dizzying to watch him!

  • thanks a lot from france we love roger 4 eva

  • Man i miss him i remember when i met him he kissed me on my head and i really didnt know who he really was cuz i was little but now i do i feel lucky to have gotten a wet kiss from him lol

  • you are so lucky i wish i could have met him and got a wet kiss from him 2

  • thanks for sharing this footage with the world! it was so fun to watch Roger at work

  • Roger Troutman Forever...

  • Thanks for putting this up...

It made me even wanna cry...

    Roger Troutman forever!

  • Awesome video^^ thanks you Kletcher

Roger like a scientist in his Laboratory :)

  • Awesome!

  • I want now the name of this song can some one help me thankxxxxxx

  • lol

  • Man Seeing roger navigate in the studio is tight, backing up punching in on the studer analog a800 24 track tape machine is a big task, befor pro-tools, sounds better and fatter than digital, plus operating that minimoog model d with the talk box is a joy. My ultimate favorit synth and own 2. i had the pleasure knowing him, he toured with my father in the 70,80,90s.Very down to earth. Much love roger

Engineer and a good D*M musician.

  • at 2:20 was that roger lynch,if it was u see where he got his talent from

  • No thats Rufus Troutman III, Roger's nephew!

  • This is good to see how a legend work in the studio much love Roger and thanks for helping to put Dayton Ohio on the map.

  • cool

  • Nice to see the Master slaving over a song!!! Shows the dedication, heart and soul that went into every song!!!!

  • i think thats the maxon driver GT2 cool!

  • Is that Ricardo?

  • Yes thats him.

  • yes roger is the king

  • Yes roger is the king

  • here you can see roger is just the king ... he doesn´t care much about his talkbox sound ... roger´s characteristic playing technique and mouthtechnique made him unique ... and not how the most of the talkbox player around the world you all just want to sound like him but can´t play keyboards and don´t feel the harmonies

  • Wooorrrrrrrrrrrrrrd!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I agree too!

  • Tha realist shit ever spoken!!!!

    C-j

  • Thats so true my friend! Well said! This video just how serious and professional Roger was about his music!!

  • You said it pawtna!!!

  • i think that you was(sin2)like everyone playing talkbox...at the start everybody wants to sound like roger....when you learn something you want to do it like the best ever live....

  • no no .... you must seperate this ... learning playing and harmonies don´t need to have a sound like roger.

The same thing ... for what do i need a big expensive car if i can´t drive good ???

  • God damned right! I created my own god damnede talk box patches1

  • im sure it was a educational experience for rick the other guy in the video who is still a member of the group today

  • The man in action!! This is a great video of Roger.. PEACE

    GQ

  • This is video is off da chain!! Roger does it up on the talkbox. NBA style!!

  • This is great footage of Roger in action at his sound lab studios in Dayton... all you talkboxers wanna-bes watch and learn from the one and only Roger Troutman... the man was a musical genius. If you notice Rog's talk box its the same thing I build so get at me if you want one.

Thanks for posting this nice footage, HollywoodVisual!!!

    Mister Groove!

  • Bigg Robb called me this morning to tell me about this video being on here and I want to thank the person that posted it. The one thing that I'm getting REAL tired of is seeing people posting messages on Roger video's, selling stuff. These people selling talk box's that sound like... look like... whatever like... Roger's, is sickening to me. Can't we just enjoy his music? For me, I just enjoy hearing his voice. That's something that our son will cherish the most.

    Taji Troutman and Mercedez

  • I agree. I don't build my talkboxes to make people sound like Roger, I build them to give off the best possible sound for that person to run their keyboard through it. I would rather they sound different from Roger with a high quality talkbox then to sound like him. The ones that buy my talk boxes just want a good clean sound from it. I hardly get anyone coming to me asking to get Roger's exact sound from my talk box cause I tell them that will never happen cause you're not Roger.

  • thank u soooo much for posting this! cant wait til part 2

  • WOW!!!I want to see MORE!!!!

  • Nice video Hollywoodvisual thanks man keep it coming lol much props for that man!!!!!
