thank you for posting this. such amazing look into the production side of roger, which was just as focused/frantic/fantastic as i had assumed. what a huge talent. miss u rog!
roger &the rest of zapp too are all incredibly talented. frm what ive heard from a few people who met roger that he was incredibly nice! this guy told me a story about how 1 year him and his kid (jim and matt) met roger at a concert & talked for a lil bit & sighned autographs for them. a few years later they went 2 anothr concert he had & they tried 2 talk to roger but the security guard said no, but roger said "hey! let them thru! that is jim and matthew and they are personal friends of mine!"
Auto tune? Nasty! Just when you thought new music couldn't get any worse. Though that crap is clearly trying to steal from Roger & Zapp, (most likely via West Coast Rap rather than directly) it's nowhere near worthy of a comparison. Roger is an ICON of Funk as far as I'm concerned.
@syddiallo Its a track recorder... what Ricardo Bray is using is the control box for punching in the vocals Roger is working on at a certain section of the track.
@owlwink, if your talking about what he recorded on,, it was all done on the 2" 24 track tape machine (Studer A800). Nothing but punch in, way before Bro-Tools (pro tools). I love his beat up minimoog!!!!!
Yep Roger used the Minimoog for a good portion of his career, although he used the DX100 in the last several years before his passing, I don't think he ever shied away from the Minimoog Analog synth
i know i'm just a 21year old young buck, but i grew up on Zapp & Roger troutmans music. i luv computer love and many more hits. it's been ten years since his death. i miss roger troutman. there was so much more for him to in the music business. Rest In Peace bro.

Come On. This is NOT, I say again is NOT, AUTO-TUNE.!! Ppl get it right, here I'll make it simple for you..... Auto-Tune (What T-Pain uses) has No Tube, you use only a Mic and a computer, turn & click on some buttons to make that effect on your voice. Now The Talkbox (What the Legend Mr. Roger Troutman used, R.I.P.) has a Tube and does Not need a computer in order to be able to play it. They are NOT the same.! If I go into more detail than that... I know I will confuse you again.
if you can't tell the difference between a vocoder and a talkbox then you should try to learn it. and maybe someday you'll be able to make a comment without looking like a complete idiot
@Goyokiki Its NOT a Vocoder or Auto Tune (which in a sense are alot alike) Nothing but a microphone and a voice...
Roger was the master of the "Talk Box" ... which as you can see here has a tube that goes into your mouth and when spoke into is the pitch of the sound that comes out is controlled by the keys on the keyboard
@ZappTech714 does it really matter its still voice altering. roger was a legend. but give tpain some credit he made changin your voice cool again and made some classics behind it. at least with his first 2 albums. and blame the industry for confusing everyone because they always say auto-tune is what he(roger) used. i knew better cuz i knw music and i knw my history but that doesn`t mean everyone else including ppl in the industry do too
@MSlilgangster89 It allowed people who can't sing or carry a tune - a new (altered) voice that they claim is their own. NOT! Be original and unencumbered by the technology. Roger was ahead of his time and innovative in his creativity. These days - all these wanna-be rappers just sample everything in sight. TPAIN and the rest of em.
can't remember the name of guitar player with Roger, isn't that Ricardo ?
He toured with Zapp in Europe back in 89. Including Paris France. Thats when I met Roger / lester / Mark / Bart and Raymond "Ray" Davis. Great people. Super stars but above all warm human beings. Viva Catalpa Drive
yeah there is a difference.I didnt know that at first either.Vocoder you can speak into a mic.you dont have to speak in the tube for a talk box.just move your mouth as your are saying the words.
jimmy and terry only wear suits when they"re on tv-- i ve seen them live in the studio many times. la and face too---they dress nice but not a full suit with the tie and all, all day--never. the 2nd(engineer) even had a sport jacket on.
I used to live in Cincinnati,Ohio. Roger lived in Hamilton. But I remember seeing him one time live.He had his guitar slung on him,and was playing the keyboard. here you can see roger is just the king ... he doesn´t care much about his talkbox sound ... roger´s characteristic playing technique and mouthtechnique made him unique ... and not how the most of the talkbox player around the world you all just want to sound like him but can´t play keyboards and don´t feel the harmonies
i think that you was(sin2)like everyone playing talkbox...at the start everybody wants to sound like roger....when you learn something you want to do it like the best ever live....
This is great footage of Roger in action at his sound lab studios in Dayton... all you talkboxers wanna-bes watch and learn from the one and only Roger Troutman... the man was a musical genius. If you notice Rog's talk box its the same thing I build so get at me if you want one.
Thanks for posting this nice footage, HollywoodVisual!!!
Bigg Robb called me this morning to tell me about this video being on here and I want to thank the person that posted it. The one thing that I'm getting REAL tired of is seeing people posting messages on Roger video's, selling stuff. These people selling talk box's that sound like... look like... whatever like... Roger's, is sickening to me. Can't we just enjoy his music? For me, I just enjoy hearing his voice. That's something that our son will cherish the most.
I agree. I don't build my talkboxes to make people sound like Roger, I build them to give off the best possible sound for that person to run their keyboard through it. I would rather they sound different from Roger with a high quality talkbox then to sound like him. The ones that buy my talk boxes just want a good clean sound from it. I hardly get anyone coming to me asking to get Roger's exact sound from my talk box cause I tell them that will never happen cause you're not Roger.
thank you for posting this. such amazing look into the production side of roger, which was just as focused/frantic/fantastic as i had assumed. what a huge talent. miss u rog!

Roger said these exact words:
Lester & I studied how the first company made one.
We studied what the parts where, & we built our own. So there's nobody to maintain it but us & it is very very difficult
to maintain.
It's a constant headache! That's why I have two on stage so that I can switch if one breaks down.
And there's two mechanisms within each one. So it's definitely a problem.

Man Seeing roger navigate in the studio is tight, backing up punching in on the studer analog a800 24 track tape machine is a big task, befor pro-tools, sounds better and fatter than digital, plus operating that minimoog model d with the talk box is a joy. My ultimate favorit synth and own 2. i had the pleasure knowing him, he toured with my father in the 70,80,90s.Very down to earth. Much love roger
Engineer and a good D*M musician.

Yes roger is the king

here you can see roger is just the king ... he doesn´t care much about his talkbox sound ... roger´s characteristic playing technique and mouthtechnique made him unique ... and not how the most of the talkbox player around the world you all just want to sound like him but can´t play keyboards and don´t feel the harmonies
