@AbbiesEquineVideos It used to be done a long time ago when women didnt wear trousers, and you cant easily ride astride in a skirt/dress. Ive done it and its suprisingly nice - its very secure as you have a different saddle with a bit that supports the other leg, and you dont feel unbalanced as your main weight is still in the middle, and you're facing forwards - its actually rather fun :)
@AbbiesEquineVideos Both your legs are on one side of the horse, imagine just sitting on a horse sideways, not astride. But you then turn to you're facing forwards (your whole upper body is) and most of your weight is still in the middle. Just with both legs on one side ;)
@imayday12 sidesaddle is fun and I prefer western now for long trail rides or when I am dozing. I haven't really ridden in about a year now due to my horse going downhill and finally passing away. But thank you!!
@StaceyAnderson2 That is one of my biggest fears I ended up under a gelding feet once and he barely missed trampling me! Ever since I am REAL careful!!
@StaceyAnderson2 See I am kind of afraid of that! I do my best to bail out if I feel the saddle slide or when I fall I let go of the reins completely. I watched a gril at a XC competition hang on to the reins and get drug under her horse it was SCARY! It honestly trampled her! Thank goodness for trainers!!!
Really? I actually didn't know Gideon is welsh, thank you that is freakin interesting. I actually know SQUAT about welsh since I have never met anyone welsh. Thank you!
And side saddle isn't actually bad it is actually kind of fun!
Actually getting to going is the easy part, adjusting for both the horse and rider is that hard part. Hard for the horse since the balance is going to feel off at first the same for the rider! As for making the horse move forward start with a riding crop in your right hand kind of as a replacement for your leg! Thanks I have really come to love gideon!
You have a lovely, safe, well mannered horse. Keep up the practicing. I agree with you - when you think of all those women out hunting side-saddle - jumping big jumps, man oh man, they were ladies, but they were also fearless.
Hot crap! I am glad you are ok! I would HATE to have my foot stuck in the stirrup again i had that happen on a old horse or mine. He was slowly (thank god!) dragging me backwards. It was funny in a sick way, this time I got lucky and thought to jump before going all the way!
HAHA thankyou!! NoooWayyy!! I Have To Admit I Was in Stitches When It Happened Im Just Soo Glad Shes Been Taught To Stop And Not Freak Out lol Well Atleast You Caught UrsOn Camera! i Wish i Did!! lol :)
I LOATHE when a horse runs off after its rider falls off! I know that every horse I have owned or trained is taught to STOP when the rider hits the dirt! Even Doc my blind TB will stop at the first sign that I am sliding and getting ready to fall.
me too!! loldo u train them then? i have another horse! soo beautiful.. but stuborn as hell!! grr!! shes friendly n that but as soon as she gets into the schooling feild.. shes not having it lol
GAH FINALS SRY!! took me a while to get back to you but YES i use to train but not anymore I am in college and I just don't have the time. Not to mention I had a crazy paso run off with me and actually got me off his back with a few nice placed turns and bucks. I had a headache for almost 2 weeks due to a previous accident (see video on my site of the tree hitting me in the head!) So it was kind of a wake up call that I need to be a little more careful.
ooo nooo way!! thats sooo scary!! lol well lucky your still on planet earth lol.. yeh when they do stuff like tht it rli nocks my confidence n soo hard to get back.. :S
I broke a vertabrae so if I fall on my back or butt its not to bad but after a good header I feel kind of iffy and shaky getting back on! But you know once your back up and going its like man what was I worried about again?
I admire your emergency dismount prowess! So important to have in the reflexes. Thank you for posting it, for all of us to see just how it's done!!! Have you watched any Endospink yet? I think you will like him!! I service side saddles and do tack/equitation clinics, email if you need fitting/flocking LC WRIGHT
I LOVE ENDO!! And yeah I am glad that was drilled into my head! I am def thinking of giving up this saddle though since I don't have the money to fix it and no time to practice. )-:
My appendix qh and i tried sidesaddle, but we can't do anything too fast. I only have the top pommel. My saddle is an antique, but it is in new condition. We have trotted and almost cantered, but it needs to be very slow and collected (and my horse doesn't like to go slow).
Mine is a anitque as well but whoever tried to refurbish it did a HORRID job! It needs a second girth not to mention a rounder and better shape to the flaps!
I learnt to ride side-saddle. Technecally it was awfully weird when i went astride and then onto western, But i am aiming too do sidesaddle with my next one.
ack thats the only body part I am not suppose to hit and always dread when I do hit. My head but at the same times ita also the only body part that can cause me to forget I hit it!
LOL its also that the side saddle isn't balanced right and I need a girth to connect to the back. ((-: I wish it was that simple it would cost close to 140$ to get this one set right. )-:
My side saddle is actually not balanced right so ever time I go past a trot I start heading to the side. ~Sigh~ I am looking to sell this one and get a new one I LOVE sidesaddle and my dream is to compete three day sidesaddle! Its honestly not that hard, people think it is but IT IS SO MUCH FUN!
My trainer did hunters and I think maybe jumpers sidesaddle for a while. She decided that she was tired of riding like everyone else, so she went sidesaddle.

AWESOME! Thanks I live in SC a pretty good distance from there but if I ever get the chance to travel I would LOVE to go. Its not as hard as a lot of people think with a good teacher and a steady horse its the best!
that would be me if i tried that. the only time ive even come close to riding sidesaddle was when i was just sitting sideways on my horse, and i fell off backwards.
your horse is gordeous but i just started side saddle and am having trouble with my balance and setting my horses head do u hav any tips.i ride arabian hunter pleasure

@StaceyAnderson2 Thank you!!! I'm not the most graceful but every once in a while I get lucky!

@JackaCrack1 You did a great landing, wish I could land like that instead of in front of the horses feet!

That is a very cool looking sidesaddle, is it a plantation style?
gypsyjumper 2 years ago
Your correct it is! I am selling it though because the girth sucks eggs!!! HORRID girth on the dang thing!
JackaCrack1 2 years ago
Oh darn, that would be a problem! lol My sidesaddle is an english style so I use a regular english girth with it.
gypsyjumper 2 years ago
The person we bought it from tried to "modify" the girth themselves. IT DID NOT work the way they thought it would.
