  • Nobody's a metronome... except Gene Hoglan

  • This is so fun to play once you've got it omnomnom

  • HAHAHAHA that beat rules so hard, it made me a much better drummer, you should do a drum lesson on d beats

  • first video ive watched by you, thanks been stressing over it XD

  • 3:2 polyrhythm goodness :D

  • this is the grooviest beat ever haha, totally bobbing my head to this, rad dude

  • man i wanna ask u..how many times hit the kick....? like double then 1 or like 1 by 1 by 1...:S

  • wow man awesume I can do that beat just traint 15 min fore it O_o thx allot !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Thank god for this video

  • owww mama.... soo good

  • This guy is the only man on the world who can look bad-ass in a Tigger costume.

  • where i can find notation for this exercise?? thanks

  • No one has perfect time... Except

    Gene Hoglan.

  • I can work very well with my limbs seperated, but this beat is HARD as cement! D=

  • You sir are simply awesome.

I've gotten at least twice as good as I was before thanks to you.

  • "Limb Seperation" Uh.. that scared me

Josh: "So the lesson today is to seperate your legs from your body, just get your hand and grab your leg and PUUUUUUUULLLLLLL"

  • Did anyone else click on this video expecting a death metal drum cover...

    or is it just me?

  • Hey Spikey i like your Druming Style and your Videos. Is it possibility to get the notes of that beat? It´s easyer to understand an play the beat.

    Thx Niki

  • So every third time you hit the snare, you are simultanious with the bass, and the other two times it will be a bit early or a bit late?

  • These are the most intuitive videos I've seen. Once I have access to my drum set, I'll be banging at it constantly, while watching you teach...I MIGHT ACTUALLY GET GOOD!

  • wow this helps sooooo much, i kept getting told if i could separate my limbs i couldnt drum.

  • i think these videos are great, not only as a beginner/intermediate lessons or guide, but also for us advanced guys. i have been playing for 15 years, play in 2 metal bands, and you knwo that thing that happens sometimes, you have an idea for a beat to put in a certain weird timed part of a song, but nothing seems to just work the way you want? these videos always seem to if not make it click, but to just help with a refresh of the basics and something just seems ot work. thanks... keep them up!

  • Going to try this tonight! Thanks for putting up these videos!

  • good teacher...as i am still learning you break things down just as a great teacher does and i find them relatively hard at first but practising all the time is borin and hard at first but it really does work...practice practice n practice...it all comes clear in the end and now ive improved with different grooves and great fills...thanks again SPIKEY...TOP 5 STAR TEACHER...

  • what if i only have 2 toms? can i improvise and use the snare, hi hat, and crash in the place of the three toms?

  • finally someone who seems to relate to me on my wavelength.,...

  • dude... this is so hard to do xD

  • Can someone please write this in tab form?

  • Wow, the drumgroove in the first part is a total mind**** :D Thanks very much, I enjoyed it a lot! The tigger suit worked perfectly for the more frustrating moments ! It helped me a lot to divide the groove into sections of three hihat strikes, thats when the bass pattern repeats again, then placing the snare differently in three of these segments completes the beat. After having that down, I was able to focus on the "polyrhythms" involved. Thanks again!

  • How would this look in tab form? :)

  • Man I can't explain how much you've helped me.. I went from playing stuff like rise against to playing avenged sevenfold in a matter of months. You're an AMAZING teacher.

  • Josh! Okay I went to Guitar Center yesterday, and this Paul guy that works there told me to drop metal because it's really simple, just played fast. However, I've seen plenty of more technical things than just straight 16ths, 32nds, etc. Oh and, I currently have Remo Coated Emperor on all of my toms.. should I switch to maybe.. Pinstripe? Thanks.

  • Thanks so much for your videos Josh. They have inspired me for months, even though I didn't have a kit. Now that I finally bought one, here I am back on your Youtube channel looking through these lessons, and man are some of them helpful. Thanks again Josh, you're one of the reasons I'm about to go practice now, and the next day, and the next.

  • hey josh. would it be accurate to say that the hit hats are going at 8th notes (1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and) and the foot is going at 8th note triplets (1-trip-let 2-trip-let 3-trip-let 4-trip-let)?

  • how long did it take you to learn this. it's freakin killing me, but super fun trying to get it down.

  • Wow, this is extremely difficult and I have been playing for 4 years... I guess I never really started practicing til a year ago though and I haven't had any lessons. I just recently started looking at youtube videos for techniques for coordination. Yours seems to be a good one, i'll be trying it out and i'll let you know how it goes!

  • @narbynarb I started laying drums in about october last year. I started practicing with the HiHat about a week later, and a week after that, it was almost perfect ^^

  • lawl, sounds violent

  • I know this was made a year and a half ago, but something that might make it easier to learn is to make a tab or sheet music for the first exercise.

  • josh cant wait to get to the kit and practice ,thanks one question your toms they look like some are the same size is that the case and if so are you just tuning them dif? thanks again for the videos

  • did u tell them that its called a polyrhythm lol

  • @MgsManiac97 it's a polymetre

  • OMG THIS IS HOW I LEARNED IT:] it is way easier if you cut the hi hat in half

  • Lol, I tried the tom thing once just for fun and I still practice it. Thought it would sound cool. Had a hard time learning it, but it turned out to be fun.

  • this is exactly what i needed to learn !!!!!!!!!!!!! thank you =)

  • wow, took me about 10 minutes to get it down. haha but i wouldn't have been able to do it if i hadn't heard you do it slow, even though you got a bit confused at the end of the slow part! :P hahahaha great stuff though none the less!!

  • Bull, u can't do this! u gotta have a tigger suit to be this sick....mango... :P

  • Thank you so much man.

  • i think you made this video for me specificly haha, i have this very problem with my legs and hands!! thanks man, im going to try this

  • Its like he said "a very simple beat that will change your life",

Thank you Spikey Drummer you've changed my life!

  • spikey ftw!

  • This technique is actually called Syncopation. It is a really helpful technique to get used to this kind of stuff. Nice lesson. :D

  • HAHA your trippin fo

  • Thx man.

You have helped me make babies with my drumset.

  • hahaha

  • lolololololololololololol

  • this was so goddamn helpful. thanks a lot.

  • This is so awesome, totally gonna try that, sound so cool.

  • Finally! I finally got this down! That last snare threw me off for like, a month but I finally got this!

  • When you first play the bass only, it seems like just a 4/4. Than when you add the hi hat, it seems as if it's a separated 4/4, like 2 hits, than two hits.

Anyways, I don't own drums, but when i play it on something, i can't lock it. Maybe thats because i only tried it for 10 minutes xD

    thanks for uploading

  • A lot of my technique sucks but this is one thing I picked up super quick - I have a feeling it's gonna save me a hell of a lot of time and effort :)

  • man i like your attitud XD

some one will pay you for all the help that you gave us

i'm very very very grateful and sure that every one that have seen even only one vidoe, learned something

soorry if my english isn't good

but i'll be better playing the drmms jaja

thank you for all you'r videos

rick metal and core lives and rules¡¡¡¡¡¡

  • aww man, i got it !, took me half an hour-40 minutes but i nailed it ,,,so proud! lol sorry if i seem like im boasting, but im writing this cuz im so happy! lol

  • Nice man, keep at it :D

  • I'm not a drummer but I had to try this, it's pretty hard at first! :D You made me to wanna buy my own drumset and start playing but I guess that's too expensive for me.

  • dude you are freaking hillarious seriously

  • it took me forever to figure this out but the trick is to do it like

    HHHH

B B B so that it feels like u ar goin bass hi-hat flam/hi-hat/bass/hi-hat/bass hi-hat flam(do in time) its hard to explain but in between each simultaneous hit of the hihat and bass. do a hi-hat then bass then hi-hat. do it so all of it is in time. start out slowly then speed up as u learn it.

  • the first exercises, can anybody write down the notes and post it here?!

  • Damn!

I just remembered when I struggled with this kind of patterns! It gets easier after a while, but oh boy is it frustrating

  • Great name for a band... Limb Seperation.

    ^^

  • lol

  • you are funny and very helpful! thank you very much for your tips and support :]

  • It's funny and educational :E

  • For anyone trying to learn this and have trouble figuring it out, this is what he is doing.

    R=right hand

    r=left hand

    b=Bass L

    r r r r

    b b b

It's a very cool pattern to learn which is basically playing 3 on your bass for every 4 on your hi-hat.

  • How many tigger suits do u have?

  • lol

  • Aww, hell, this lesson is gonna kill me...

  • hmmmm i wonder if this would be any use with double bass...i think im gonna try it out lol what the hay!!!

  • i need a lot of work in this area thanks for the exercises.

    keep kicking ass.

  • this is kinda confusing cuz it sounds like in the beat that the kick isnt steady and then when u say "ok this is what ur bass is doing" the kick drum seems to be just be doin 1 2 3 4 1 2 3 4 at a steady pace

  • haha i thought the same thing, but i think the bass is going 1 2 3 1 2 3 while the hi-hat is going 1 2 3 4 1 2 3 4

  • Na the bass drum is just on the off-beat, played in between the hi-hat hits instead of on them.

  • That part about being scared to venture to toms has happened with me...& I'm still a bit like that...However, that roll u gave would be of special help!!!

& drumming is all bout resilience...heck, anything is!!..If u stick around, do the same thing over & over again till u get it right, u WILL get it!..& it tastes much sweeter that way...Regardless what I'll be able to play in this life, drumming has made me realize this valuable lesson!

& God knows how many more such revelations are on my way!!

  • This is so cool. Learned that first part today.

    1. Its a cool grove.

    2. Its challenging.

Its kind of like a mental and audial illusion isnt it? Sounds like the bass drum is striking differently but its actualy in a straight sequence i think? :P

    You rock! :)

  • Hi Any chance you could do the first part of this video again with the beats much slower?

  • dude, how should i count my hi-hats so i can know when to put the bass and snare in?!? i'm lost but really wanna learn this cos i'm new to drumming and LOVE metal

  • well, in this particular beat it's "one and two and three and four and..." hang in there man... it will clear up soon... just keep practicing! welcome to the metal drumming family!

  • @matei13au ROFL COUNT EACH HIT

  • @matei13au

Wow, the drumgroove in the first part is a total mind**** :D Thanks very much, I enjoyed it a lot! The tigger suit worked perfectly for the more frustrating moments !

  • @elceedee

Great explanation. I just got it!

  • @matei13au i don't know if this makes sense, but... if you're playing eighth notes on the hi hats, you play dotted eighths with your foot and snare on 2 and four... sorry if that's confusing.

  • this one is actually a little harder than i expected but im slowly getting the hang of it. i think! lol. what messes it for me is when i add the snare in it but that just makes me wanna keep on trying till i get it right. thanks for the videos spikey. all of them so far have really been real helpful to helping me with my drumming! ! ! keep up the good work! ! !

  • hang in there man! this one is supposed to be a bit of a brain teaser

  • Dude, Spikey.. I skipped this video because I thought I wouldn't need it... I was wrong.

The beat at the beginning is so hard, and I finally got the arm separation down, thanks man.

  • awesome man! I'm glad you found this difficult... it may not seem like it, but it will definitely help your coordination

  • Thanks, :D

  • you are seriously the best drum teacher i ever found on the internet. sad that ppl like u are so rare. if i was you i would be selling this as a whole package, cause kids out there will learn a lot from it!

  • thanks man! I appreciate it! I won't be selling these youtube videos ever... they are simply free videos to help out new and intermediate drummers... but I appreciate it!

  • of course the vids should be free :D

all i'm saying is that i think you are a drummer who somehow didn't forget what he had to struggle with when he was learning things. and therefore you are better at explaining. exspecially in pointing out difficulties. this is a gift man. believe me i've seen alot of professional drumteachers and they don't understand what kind of problems a newcomer has. and with selling this you'd just broaden up your audience. but still keep it free on utoob.

  • Thanks man, I'm honored! and I really appreciate it too... I'm glad you find my teaching to be helpful. thanks again

  • josh,

what is the bpm for this beat? what should it be for the bass, hit hat and snare if that makes any sense. thanx!!!

  • I'm sorry man, I'm not exactly sure what bpm this beat is... but are you sure that's what you're asking, because bpm is speed (beats per minute)

  • I guess what I mean is if I use a metronome what should I set it at. Example should I set it at 70bpm and play the hit hat a regular 4/4 and play the base at 50bpm and play 1/8th notes. I hope that makes sense. I just started drumming a few weeks ago so I'm still learning all of this so hoefully this isn't confusing (though it probably is). =)

  • well, I wouldn't try to set your metronome to the individual drums... just try to play along to the entire click track

  • great! congrats!

  • everybody who plays in instrument is plagued with time. :(

  • lol, hang in there man... time and meter will follow you forever... make them your friends!

  • OMG i actually tried it today when i went to church and i got it in less than like 2 min !!! omg ! i'm so proud of myself... i NEVER and i mean NEVERR thought i'd b able to do it.. i can even play it really fast !!! ha ! i'm so happy right now sorry and i am crowding ur comment space but.. like when i tried to play it first i was messin up so badly when i had to add in the snare part.. the high hat and bass were good but things stated getting crazy with the snare.. anyway... thank u so much !

  • That's very good to hear! I fully understand the excitement when you finally are able to do something you've always wanted to do... I ran all over the house and got my family and friends to listen when I learned blast beats for the first time.

  • yo u got the struggle thing DOWN PACT.. my mind goes thru a real struggle when i'm tryna do things to get myself more coordinated.. thank u for that.. a lot.. 4 sum reason i thought i was the onli one going thru that craziness lol n btw u put it into the best words.. bravo ! .. good job man

  • I am glad you were able to identify with this video... thanks!

  • When I started drumming, I learned to play the song Vasoline by the Stone Temple Pilots. This really helped with limb separation. If anyone is having trouble with this beat maybe you can try that one.

  • thanks man! I'm glad this helped!

  • lol i was just thinking man this sounds sort of like a meshuggah beat... then i read the coment below this one

    great vids

i was just wondering what kind of snare and head you have... they sound really good

  • thanks man, and I agree, bleed by meshuggah has a similar pattern, however the single bass is replaced with quads

  • hey josh, kind of unrelated - to this video - question.

i was wondering about the flying fingers technique, i watched your video but when i try it myself my pointing finger always seems to follow my other fingers when i begin to move them

  • don't worry man, it's going to move like that... I was just saying that the middle fingers do most of the work

  • Oh i see, is it possible to do a "walk" pattern (like walking to play bass) to make them faster, or should you just learn to move them real quick?

  • Sorry for double comment here, when i got round to trying this i dont seem to be able to get the right thing going. I understand the 4/4 time sig. on the hi-hat and where the snare comes in but i wasnt sure about the off beat of the bass drum, could you explain a little more?

  • yes, it's the very same concept... the timing is the same, however the bass pattern is totally different.

  • hey josh im a new drummer i got my drumset 2 days ago so if i cant play that, can practice alone make my limb separation better ???

  • congrats on the new drum set! Don't worry man... my drum lessons are for many different playing levels. This particular video might be a little too much for you to start out with... but that doesn't mean anything at all... just like you said... practice alone will always help to separate your limbs and prepare for the coordination needed...

  • i've just been practising this, and i find that the easiest way to add the snare is to:

make ur right hand hit each note in 3 places a few centimetres apart, in the pattern [left-centre-right-centre] so you can actually SEE that the snare plays when your right hand plays to the right, so you don't lose count of the beats when playing the polyrhythm.

    Great lesson, btw.

PS: does any of that make sense?

  • Thanks for the advice to everyone... I'm glad you found a way to make this easier. I hope it helps everyone out!

  • aaaaa the left of my brain feels...:P

I dont know not to shure how to explain it:)

but nice you gave me another way to practice limb separation and to make shure that I have it

    THANKS!!!

  • lol cool man.. just hang in there... you'll be ok!

  • When Two Are One by Atreyu. They use this triplet method in their chorus. ttabs(dot)com shows a tab for this(no this isn't advertisement). Just, if you hear this song, hear the drums for it, you can get an extra feel for it. Just something if you wanna learn for the hi-hat and bass as triplet while HH does eighths.

  • cool man, thanks for the sample... I'm sure the viewers could use outside example.

  • ya the snare fucks me up.

  • lol I know... it just takes a little practice... it's like a brain puzzle.

  • Ow my brain hurts.

    Getin it though...slowly

  • lol hang in there man... I know it's tough

  • hey man,

    awesome job with the videos

:D i think that once i get a kit this will help out tonnes

    keep it up

    :D

  • thanks man, I appreciate the encouragement

  • This makes my brain hurt lol. When is the bass coming in relative to the hi hat?

  • ah, don't worry man... it's not as bad once you've practiced it a lot... you probably need to watch it again, so that you can see when the bass comes in.

  • Thanks alot for this man it shockingly improved me on every other beat i do

  • awesome man... I'm glad this helped you out!

  • Im gonna be stuck on this one for a bit...legs and arms dont wanna work at the same time...first learned this cause of rockband lol...sweat beat...but ur making me want more cymbols :(

  • lol I'm glad this is a challenge though man, just hang in there man, all it takes is a little practice.

  • good beat

  • thanks!
