Great song, great lyrics and great singer...took me a while to find this and fond memories of radio plays in 1970 when i was very young....tunes like this stay with you !
No-one's mentioned who wrote this great song! I heard this when I was seven and have only just now heard it again - and was amazed at how much I remember! That's a sign of a true classic. Definitely time for a re-release....
A truly great song from the Singer's singer,I remember Kenny Everett took to it in a big way and plugged it on his Radio 1 show.Matt did a special edited version for the show.Makes you feel so much better , fantastic !
I knew Dave Mathews. We went to his house and had a music night and he came to our house which was an old water mill. If you see this Dave its Martin and Mary White. I used to visit your shop too in Burton, Best wishes and I hope life is treating you well.
Loved this as a child and really wanted to change the world then - still do - more and more. Well done Matt and lets get you back to the top of the charts!!! (yes and let's change the world too ::))))
Great song the lyrics resound with today's times(cuts and the student protests) better then any major lyricist or pop composer can in today's apathetic times of false music and soulless pop songs that come of an assembly line of manufactured sounds and re hazes of greater songs. Somebody should get it re released it would still make the top spot if enough people heard it.
I watched the children of the revolution getting on their coaches for London this morning, and I thought of this song. It could have been written today.
I've always loved this song. I remember listening to it as a kid in the early 70's. Even back then I was intrigued by the lyrics. Great song by a great voice.
I don't think this is typical of Matt's poutput but I suppose no-one forced him to do it. Maybe it was the optimism of the times, that change really was coming, but there was a fair amount of this kind of 'swingin 60's music written by squares' and sometimes it can work really well even if it is a bit cheesy. Let's not forget that not many years after this (1977 in fact) Matt claimed he was always a bit of a punk really
@bobgreen623 i think this is a classic ..dont get me rong .. the bass players is my focas .. talented .. big time .. dont get me rong love the song .. Bass player full respect .. nobody nows his name :(
I heard this song once decades ago and immediately loved it. Couldn't find it anywhere (thought it was Perry Como!). The internet told me it was Matt Monro, so now I not only get to hear a fantastic song that I thought was lost to me, but I actually get the lyrics, and they're amazing!
I sear to God, I though Matt was American/Italian. Now knowing he is English, I can see how he wasn't as big as he should have been! Brits never get a fair chance! He should have been bigger than Sinatra! He was a better singer!
@VincesVinyl I never thought of that but you're right! Maybe Hannon's voice is a little 'richer' and his delivery is a touch ironic at times but yes! this could be a Neil Hannon song
Forget the words, this is a great tune and arrangement, superbly sung.
Actually, most pop songs have crass lyrics. I never listen to the words, except a few key ones maybe in the chorus that, if you like, punctuate the music.
I was lucky to have lived through this era, but likeRanjeeb I used to dismiss him as just another singer, but having watched the documentry it's made me realise what we lost when he died...perfection. Both Frank Sinatra and Nat King Cole agreed. What more recommendation is needed
I love this; it's the perfect pop record, great lyrics, catchy tune and it doesn't sound cheesy either. It 's one of those records that will always be on the Radio 2 playlist, particularly on Sarah Kennedy's show.
reminds me of a camping hoiliday with me mum & dad when i was 9, i'm 52 (nearly) now, happy memories!!!! Thanks.

I've always been intrigued by the irony of this record.
It's swinging sixties just as that period decayed.
The antithesis of all that Matt Monro stood for, the blazer and flannels and polished shoes. And quite right too.
He was right in his values.
The 60's imploded.
I know it rejuvenated his career but it was so out of character it must have grated with him to do such poppy material.
He was a band singer. Of Ballads. An entertainer.
