  • This original version HAS to be brought back, with the chimes or "bong"s between the headlioes. It grabs you with so much more gravitas to it than the puny synth version of nowadays. Please ITV, it IS the soundtrack of the TV news.

  • @ossymos I associate it with Dad coming home from work, and being told off for staying up too late. LOL.

  • I always thought this piece of music was written for News at Ten, until I noticed it in the score Filipino/US horror flick "Beyond Atlantis" (1973). Similar, the theme for "Mastermind" shows up in "Psycho Puppet" (1979). Seems likely both were stock pieces that the programme makers used.

  • You just get the impression that after each "bong" some kid is getting a clip round the ear !

  • @chapleeds LOL XD

  • i want this as my ringtone lol

  • Sit up straight, get your hair cut, do a bit of National Service - this is the NEWS! (Copyright Bill Bailey)

  • yeh it was so serious hearing this drift up from downstairs when in bed, it was like they were going to announce that global thermonuclear war was definately gonna happen any minute now.

  • When you heard this, you were either up to late or you knew you had to be in bed for school next morning! It made staying up late as a child rather sinful.

  • makes you feel like they're about to tell you the reigning monarch has died

  • This is a hard core opening to a program. You Brits don't mess around with your news, do you?

  • As a young boy it used to scare the crap out of me

  • @rowleyandtheboyz Same here!

  • roy west

  • My dad used to leave for night shift just before the News at ten came on and my mum watched it. I used to find the theme quite freaky at that time.

  • So, If I'm the "one" that she herself had me pull muself, I am indeed the one I pulled out of space.

    :o

    And over to you, NHS...

Where's the fucking SUPERMODEL and the "doubled up" grand prize?

Down with the OTHER guy's ship?

I intend to be THIS insulting, as BJ and me are the same, but have definately miid-homicde attempts proven there is an agenda for me to fail. Even apparently at spending the day at home with a girlfriend, that posthumously needed a pimp and me a bill.

    Run it tru BOGGIN

  • Which WAG event horizon? I'm confused again. The fiery pheonix or the Baskbo championships befo she wo calaimed by murerin ho?

Miss America? Don has aan exclusive? Which Don now? One of them is dead.

Again, to top off tonights story, WHAT A LOAD OF FUCKING HORSEHIT from the Palace, there's your TV, there's your PAL, Ace.. a system of scan lines.

Oh, and NSA, there's you "song lyrics" as promised from real time Colin slaughter and urm, the "impossible" CSIS surveiallnace camera Card trick.

  • So rounding off today's top story of the 1970's, "EVERYBODY" is STILL full of chicken shit from the Coup. Join us tomorrow evening for Princess Gate. It's not for another 10 years or so, but you KNOW you've seen it already.

    Thankyou and goodnight.

    TIM? SAM" OMFG...SAY SAMTIM!!! PLEASE!

    SAY SAMTIM, MASSA!

  • Urm... there were some "ownership" discrepancies with that Don guy, and some card. Trump cards, I believe they were. Back to the studio.

Thanks, didn't Colin actually call the Queen of Hearts. Right, but it was "Trumped" after Donal went insane and started murdering everyone again. That's right, and Colin, after the impossible swishes sent the ace of spades through a video camera and 10 years backwards through time and space via satellite, live, with an NSA audience yet no "Miss America". WTF?

  • Back to you in London, take us though this.

Right, well I thought that SHE said that WAG was a basketball event where her number one TRUELY HONEST crush sank a swish and they had sex in the locker room and something in a 67 mustang with a guy named Dave? Right, back to you then as the story agian changes like a diaper.

Wait, what about Colin. Didn't he sink the two "impossible" trick shots with all net, all the time in the last 10 seconds of play?

Yes, he did..urm, where's "Miss America" then?

  • First on the news this evening, OLD FAITHFUL. The geyser that never made it past the stump. Over to you, Althorpe..

Right, thankyou London. It's a lovely day here today...just a sec... I"m getting something here. JESUS FUCK, EVIDENCE?

Someone copy that, see if you get tip money, send it to six and see if BJ lives through the night again.

(Music fades to Bon Jovi, Thankyou for loving me). WAH MUMMY!Don't worry , WAG's assurance that "when she is ready, she will arise from the ashes like pheonix

  • Super Bowl III highlight film used this music, probably before ITN: "Baltimore's power, so evident on the icy turf of Cleveland's Municipal Stadium, seemed to be melting away in the warm Florida sun." - the great voice of John Facenda.

  • When men could smoke a Park Drive without flinching, drive home safely after a night of heavy drinking, and knew how to fill out a Littlewoods pools coupon.

  • This theme was used from 1982.

  • Just the theme music, no period headlines? I remember this theme well. The beats of the music at the end always made me think of a Tom & Jerry cartoon where a telegraph pole falls on Tom and hammers him into the ground.

  • 1970's News at Ten, adults only! ......seemed like serious shit if you were young at the time.

  • Scary!

  • Love the kettle drums!

  • Im using this for a vid im going to put on here

  • Scares the living crap outta me that did.... DUN DUN DUn DUNDHUN...

    Help!

  • @VainEldritch

Dont be daft, Sandy Gall on the other hand used to scare me shitless.

  • When I was growing up, if you heard this piece of music, you knew you were up late!!

  • this video is a good one haahah

  • 0:10 Creepy..~~~~~

  • If you listen to the startup today there is a extra drum beat before for bongs!

  • They are still using this theme tune.

  • @alslevie1986 Yeah but too freshened up!

  • I remember the backward News At Ten Tiswas spoof too!

  • This title reminds me of the 90's titles when mostly Trevor McDonald is newscaster

  • Anybody remember the "Tiswas" Spoofs

    "Nosey Parkin"

    "Angela Ripoff"

    "Sandy Gallbladder"

    "Trevor McDonut"

    Fun times!

  • @qgloscit Not to mention the voice-overs along the lines of 'We interupt this newsflash for a programme' or 'We interupt this newsflash for yet another newsflash'. Happy times indeed...

  • tell me the crazy names that they put the Benny Hill show.

  • I remember it fondly in living BLACK & WHITE in our house !! (till summer '74 when we had our colour t.v.) ; this show started in '67

  • the sweeney has just finished and my mum and dad were watching,i was listening from bedroom lol.

  • It used to make me laugh in the Seventies that the 'News At Ten' was often at 10.10, 10.15 etc if some film or football match delayed it! It should often have been called the Late News; maybe 10 minutes late, sometimes 15 minutes late...

  • This theme tune was serious, authoritarian and right in that it told you

(a)the news was about to begin,

    (b)kids should be in bed

and (c)it let you know in the intro that this was a damned serious news programme

Today the pisspoor reimaging and brightened up sigtune sound more like jolly Disney on acid!

  • So funny,

I was also in fear of this intro!! If I heard it, through the walls, as I lay in bed, I knew it was getting late and I had to get up for school in the morning and do it all again!!

  • people used to set their clocks by those bongs assuming it was live , probably wasent though lol

  • This music always used to scare the crap out of me when I was 8 closely followed by my Mum saying GO TO BED & I used to hear the outro through the floorboards.......ah the nightmares I had.

  • Dude, me too! Through the floorboards and everything. It's some seriously scary music ... well, that and the Yorkshire Television chevron.

  • Thanks.......Man the 70's was some kinda dark age

  • So true. I had the same experience. If you heard that music and you weren't in bed all hell broke loose...LOL

  • @budapestactive Yup LOL.

  • This was the best bombastic ews intro of all time. It was so dramatic it made the hairs go up on your neck!

  • HELP! I'm scared of this ;-) seriously though, this is when you knew the news was on.

  • See the way the crash-zoom to the clock-face was edited?

There was an earlier version without the "still" at the end, that suffered from camera shake when the clock was in in close-up.

  • Agreed. There was something "harder" about this version, much more serious than the feeble re-imaging that you see and hear today.

  • YEP! u see back then, when the news came on, u KNEW the news was on! there was something authorative in the theme tune and ident. just like jonnyE and chookter1 said, u KNEW it was time to go to bed (if u were a child). not like todays version. feels like some kinda substitute teacher compared to the 70s and 80s!

  • Ellie Crisell and the 90 second update - say it all really nowadays - how annoying is she!!

  • jeezus, bwonngg.

    that it?no news

  • You just put a disturbing song into my mind...

  • I don't know why this was down voted - it is a only quote from a BBC TV comedy show.

  • Tell that to those N@T purists!

  • Anybody got the Benny Hill parody one?

  • I do . . . on DVD, from A&E Video. And that's where you can get it.

  • Very rare to get a clean version as this...excellent!!

  • Ask not for whom the bell tolls...

  • Im still disturbed by this. It made staying up beyond ten seem like a sinful thing! lol

  • @chookter1 That's so funny but SO TRUE! Anyone not British or who grew up in the 1970s/80s probably wouldn't understand!

  • @chookter1 Too right it did! LOL. I was four when I used to hear that. It was like the chimes of doom! LOL.

  • OMG Bill Bailey was right!!!

  • Why? What did he say?

  • Okay, not only did News at Ten boast the scariest news opening (not a word of a lie), but it's even scarier without the voiceover.

And they want to bring it back!

  • Glad they have done; it's great.

  • Yes, it always teached kids to go to bed before ten o'clock! Haha. I really don't like the new opening. It's almost too modern...and the melody sounds cheap.

  • @vashtijoy OOOO, that's gonna warp a whole new generation of kids! LOL.

  • This exact recording of the theme music was used for Benny Hill's Dec. 22, 1971 parody (which he called "NIT 'News at Ten'"). I'm sure y'all remember that one . . . the one where Hill, as "Reginald Boozenquet," was reading a news item and the film shown was of the prior story.

  • The news at ten is the same title used on KTLA in the LA area during the Hal Fishman years

  • Also used on and off over the years by WPIX-11 in New York . . . first in the late 1960's/early '70's, then from the early 1990's to the present day.

  • @wmbrown6 Now the News at ten title is used on KTLA again since Micah Olman was taken out of KABC to do the KTLA News at 10

  • Greatest news theme for tv newscast in my opinion!!!!

  • cant wait fot it on blu ray. any 1 got the french version ?? news at dis???

  • who recorded all of this and kept it???!!!
