@dauntul You already can order from the thing. You must be very very behind. They already showed this device being used to order food and drinks 3 years ago. It's time to move beyond the 3 year old ordering process.
@pfrabott not only i am very very behind, i am so plain that i fail to see the awesomeness of this ingenious application. i pity me. not only do i have to go drink in hopes of forgetting about me, but i also have to order my drink! world is so cruel...
The IR light Surface uses is in the "Near Infrared" band, similar to what TV remote controls use. It is designed to be eye safe. The key is that the IR light is coming from a large, diffuse source, so the power density stays low. Conversely, this is why even relatively low power lasers can be dangerous - all of the power is concentrated on a little spot. Surface simply doesn't have this issue.
i fucking hate the way technology is mis-used in such applictions, i.e. trying to create physcological profiles of when is the best time to trick someone into buying shit they dont want. fuck off with this stupid waste of money and find a cure for cancer you fucking morons
Technology should have real and useful application in our lives.
This type of research might/might not serve a cause to human race. We talk about reaching out to stars while millions still don't really understand what's it all about? Why not spend this energy in our own well-being or invest in what we already have rather than seeking something new & meaningless for the moment?
The application of any new technology is difficult to justify unless it impacts masses within few years of invention.
@AotearoanBlue , I see your point of view, but this engineering is a wonderful combination of science and art, and inspires others into creative work.
@AotearoanBlue Considering the applications of this research go beyond the drinking glass, I think it is a very good investment. Sometimes the impact to the masses isn't known until you actually invent and deploy. If everything stopped inventing things that they felt didn't impact the masses during the research phase, we wouldn't have anything being researched. NASA wouldn't exist, and science would be stagnant.
Do you really need the table to tell the customer when the glass is empty?
How about a more useful research? like the a milk pot in kitchen which switches off the gas burner automatically when its hot enough? We still don't have such a good and affordable design in every house!
The idea with this physical buttons was just, that it might be a low price solution, and low price always goes good. Then of course your product would offer a totaly different form of aesthetics.
How about simply integrating a small button line into the middle or the edge of the table to let the customers make calls himself.
Like
I have chosen my meal.
I would like another drink refill.
I wanna pay.
Besides that the personell of the restaurant will surely have a hard time to handle this service as there usually are enough more important tasks to do...
Well the point of this is to offer exactly that, but for the table to do it intelligently. So when it thinks you're most likely to want a refill it pops up a button asking you if you want one. It's about maximising profit for the company.
The table software would almost certainly have options for the user to ask for refills at any time, or order new drinks and stuff too (integrated into the software, not physical buttons.)
@LKDesign They already have this. Been around for 2 years now on the surface. It's time for the surface to do new things. (It was cool to see in person at the Hard Rock in Las Vegas 2 years ago. Ordering a meal from the surface and seeing all the Hard Rock history. It was something else).
I've heard about another invention similar to this(indicating to a bartender when to fill someone's beer glass/mug). Only, it uses a simple cup mat that gauges the weight of the glass and radios a signal to the bartender to fill up the customer's glass.
The surface ware graphics were a little annoying, but other than that it seems like a good idea though I think that if surfaceware could also determine what fluid is contained...
there is one major problem: the bottom of the glasses look strange with prism, as long as there is something sticking out, the customers might not like it.
this is marketed as a scamming product. lol you want customers to "think" theyre going to want a refill by catching them at the right moment and no other moment? pfft. how typical of microsoft.
The glass is purposely "low-tech" - it's Surface that does all the real work. Also, keep in mind that the test glasses shown in the video were created to verify the principle of operation. If this were to become a product, it would look substantially different since aesthetics would be a key consideration.
I have seen many vain applications of technology, this is also stupidly applied.
Firstly of all I don't mind if my glass goes empty. happened hundreds of times before and all went well.
Secondly I may want something else or maybe I am done.
And thirdly why not ordering from the damned thing?

I'm concerned about the heat produced by ir light....what is the amount that surface emitts?
is it safe for the eyes?
we do not see ir light, but hey, we can still feel heat...

Thank you so much for explaining me this important topic:
i think people, like me, need to hear that this products are safe.
we are often bad-informed about things,
and this may affect the purchase of certain products.
I hope to see more videos:) greetings from italy:)

Or at least a buzzer (but in most cases, it won't help. By the time you reach the kitchen the damage would be already done)
Or a gas stove which switches itself off whenever it senses over-heating?

Modify the os to work with the pos in order to calibrate the weight of fluid for each size glass in two different states.
The server rings in a pint of beer, then the sensor in the table tracking weight compares the customer's tab with the drinks on the table.
Seems easier than an engineered cup.
