I feel like Liza won this award after her mother lost it in A Star is Born...In Fact, I often feel like Liza's career has always been doing the things that her mother never got to do and livin life in the place over the rainbow that her mother never got to see
Should have gone to Diana Ross. When I watched Cabaret I was blown away by the fact that Liza and Joel won. I thought NEITHER of their performances were special at all
For the ones who don't understand Raquel's remark at 0:50 'I hope they haven't got a cause' This is a reference to Marlon Brando having rejected his Oscar previously that evening. You can see this video among the suggestions.
@morik1 I have been saying this for years. 1973 was a much weaker year in the Best Actress category, and if only the film had been released then, Diana Ross would have easily won.
THIS WAS PURE HOLLYWOOD NEPOTISM. DIANA ROSS WAS A SHOE-IN.SHE WAS AMAZING IN "LADY SINGS THE BLUES".THIS WAS DIANA ROSS' AWARD FOR SURE. THEY MIGHT AS WELL HAVE SAID THE AWARD GO TO.....JUDY GARLANDS DAUGHTER!
Hattie McDaniel won an Oscar in 1940 for Gone With The Wind so to say the Acandemy wasn't ready to give a black woman an Oscar is patent rubbish. Liza Minelli was brilliant in Cabaret, the fact that the film and role are still remembered by many, many people is testament to the validity of her win.
Why is Maggie Smith like NEVER present ? It's the third time I have seen a video in which she has been nominated but she is never there. I guess it all were Oscars.. would be interesting to know!
well i am a liza and a diana fan i love them both. i have seen both movies and thought they were both great. Liza won and she was wonderful as sally diana was great as billy holiday who i also love, they should have given them both an oscar as they did when kate and barbra tied in 1968 or 1969.
Let's face it! Hollywood just wasn't ready in the early 70's to give the Oscar to a black woman. Until Lady sings the blues blacks were only portraying slaves or servants but never a glamorous Lady like Miss Ross portrayed Billie Holiday. She didn't look or sound like Billie but at least she did some damn good acting. Don't forget Diana Ross is a singer and this wasit was Diana's first film. Liza also did a great job but I do get the feeling she only won because her mom never got to win one!
@Patrickibens Minelli was great in this, and the idea that the Oscars would never award a black woman is clearly just not true. Why do people always have to come up with hateful comments about why their favorite lost instead of just being glad for the winner. I bet Ross wasn't as bitter about this as these fans.
Even after all the years, and watching these films over again-and-again--I still believe that Diana Ross should have won this one. it was Ross who remained most in the character. I think that Liza simply made her portrayal out of herself. She stayed in that character in real life, too. This is a criticism that the academy has held against others. It was a different time, and America was not ready for the controversy; however, it was credible for the Academy to give a nod to all the women.
@stacystewartsmithart i'm sorry. do you know ANYTHING, at all, about billie holiday? at all? i honestly do not understand how anyone can honestly, objectively even, argue that diana ross was billie holiday.
@TheJspyder136 Yeah. There was an incident with Marlon Brando. He won, refused to show and sent an Apache woman in in traditional garb to read his letter protesting the anti-Native racism in Hollywood. It's a good point, but it's a bad place to do it. I also heard the woman was actually an actress and not even Apache. So that was a pretty terrible move lol
Liza 300% deserved this. Anyone who thinks that Diana Ross (or anyone else) should have won over Liza should check themselves out. And no, I'm not a fan of Liza in general.
0:49 two black women nominated (who didnt win) and Rachel Welch says "hope they dont got a Cause"......Am I the only one who senses the Ratial tension in the comment....bet you a thousand bucks from that moment on miss Welch's career dindt actually benefit from that.
@contact1araya she was referring to the marlon brando/sacheen littlefeather incident that had occurred just minutes before on that very night. so, yes, you are indeed the only one.
@contact1araya Well, two black women nominated.. That's a disproportionate number of black people for one getting nominated. It says of the best actresses, two of four happened to be black and the other two white. That says nothing. There was a 50/50 chance of a black woman winning. So, just by the numbers, zero evidence of racism.
If you googled the 45th Academy Awards, you'd know about the incident with Marlon Brando's win. Also, your jump to "racism" is stupid and says a lot about you.
Liza is not Jewish--not that it matters. It is unfortunate that some people use this platform to spew their misguided anger. Liza is a great artist and gave great iconic performance. The other performers gave great performances as well. This is how the oscars are---perhaps unfair, but this is how it is....
@bigttim1 | she is jewish, that is why you think she is ugly.. it's the same with rowan atkinson and amy winehouse, do you hate them too? i hate them..
I know the nominees are feeling a tremendous amount of pressure at the moment the award is being presented, but geez...What a happy, excited-looking group of women! (sarcasm)
wow how much the oscars has changed there was no clapping during the introductions also there were only four female nominees instead of five of them i like looking at the actors/actresses when they were younger and how they look now it is very interesting to do to remember this is where they came from which made them the person they are today
An Oscar too soon. The Academy couldn't resist, after having shafted Judy, but it should have. Liza might have made better career choices if she had lost. Movie-wise, she is a one-hit wonder, which is too bad because she had talent--acting talent.
Some thoughts....wow, ALL those women (sans Ross, maybe) fully deserved this, too...they were all GREAT in their parts. And the irony of giving it to Minnelli is that it started a spiral of trying-to-top-herself (which she never achieved) and which resulted in massive downfalls of Addiction (not unlike her mother). Yes, she was great in "Cabaret" and deserved such recognition as this, but what a price to pay for a gold statue.
@lilwelshladee I have. I saw all the flims all outstanding in differant ways. All the ladies have great talent but only one could win. Liza deserved her award. But it dosent mean the others are talentless. I couldnt pick a BEST when it comes to all those awesome talented women.
I'd forgotten Liza went out with Desi Arnaz Jr. I think this was another year of tied winners; Diana Ross was brilliant too. This award should go to both of them.
I just realized when Raquel Welch said "I hope they don't have a cause" she was suffering to that night Marlon Brando refused his award and had a native american speak on his behalf. I love Raquel but man how rude can you get?
dian ross applauded but you can see she was very dissapointed she didnt win, she is used to winning and breaking down barriers all the time. she would have been the first black woman to win best actress
THIS MUST BE SO HARD FOR THE OSCARS TO CHOSE THE WINNERS. I MEAN LIZA WAS AWESOME IN CABARET BUT THE OTHER LADIES WERE ALSO GREAT IN THEIR PERFORMANCES. I JUST WONDER HOW THEY CHOOSE EVERY YEAR SPECIALLY IN THE CATEGORIES OF BEST & SUPPORTING ROLES & BEST PICTURE.
As much as I love Judy, this was LIZA's win .... nobody else's -- so there was no reason to thank her mother. She thanked the people who helped her win the award. And she deserved it.
@TheGebs24 Yeah, but personally, I think the Academy should give Judy, posthumously, a lifetime achievement award. They robbed her of the Academy Award for A Star Is Born and although they gave her a special award as a child it wasn't the same thing as Best Actress.
@sagittariusbaby0750 look at these other comments and then ask yourself "do i speak to hear my own voice, and if so why?" thats great that you "dont care" for Liza...hey there is some traffic running bye outside, maybe you ought to go play in it! you seem soo annoying..
Charlie Chaplin won an oscar on the same program, and he got 5 minutes of sustained applause...probably more and he deserved it.
Yeah, people talk about PDA with stars today, but Liza and her bf Desi Arnaz Jr were unstoppable in public. The magazines then were just all kissing between them.
@spiderwebs7215 why should she thank her mother ? judy had nothing to do with this ! liza inherited the voice thats true, but cabaret was lizas win - not judys, judy had enough spotlight in 20 years !!!!
@spiderwebs7215 because she and her mother never had a good relationship it was always a competition between them judy was jelaous of liza and her voice and liza wanted to breake away from her mother for a long time...
Diana Ross's face looks like she's thinking "Remember to smile, you knew they would give it to a white bitch, just keep smiling.." It was a hard call though to be honest, I know Liza did great and Diana gave a career-defining performance, so it was 50/50. However, that bitch Liza doesn't even thank her monther; what an ungrateful cunt!
@hebleedsglitter Some people like to keep their speeches short & sweet. And I am sure her mom knows that she is thankful- Liza didn't blubber on about "I am so lucky...so thankful..." which can get annoying. Short & Sweet was a perfect.
a friend of mine was a super Liza fan and we met her at the artists entrance to the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion when she was in concert there in the 70's. Even though I am not one of her biggest fans, I must say she was gracious, kind and as warm and sincere as she comes across on stage and in interviews. She seemed more interested in our lives than we were in hers. A beautiful lady.
Is it just me or did anyone else notice Cicely Tyson turn to the gentleman sitting next to her and say "Liza Minnelli" just after Gene Hackman said "And the winner is..."??? It's almost as if she knew that she wasn't going to win! I love Liza, she is phenominal!!! But I truly wish Diana had won this award!!!!! Some say that they gave it to Liza because her mother never recieved an Oscar while she was living. Regardless of whether or not this is true, I just wish Diana had won!!!!!!
Such a shame her mother (Judy Garland) wasn't alive to see her daughter winning it. Especially since she (many would argue unjustly) lost it to Grace Kelly in 1955.
@lilwelshladee I have seen cabaret and in my opinion sounder and lady sings the blues are beyond excellent, but i understand why others think cabaret was the rightful winner. in the game of award giving someone will lose
19 people missed the like button....or they have no idea what talent is......if u email me your adress i will be happy to send u a dictionary for christmas!!
"hope they haven't got a cause" was Raquel Welch's reaction to the Marlon Brando's boycott of the Oscars and his sending of Sacheen Littlefeather to explain why he would not show up to collect his Best Actor award for The Godfather.
@leideneric I LOVEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE Judy Garland BUT she wasnt in the flim LIZA was. Liza won the award. Liza didnt mention her dad either but it dosent mean she dosent dearly love him. Liza isnt Judy and the other way around, I adore them both for differant reasons. This was Liza s nite, I think her mom would understand that simple truth.
"Sounder" and "Lady Sings the Blues" are more enduring films than “Cabaret”, but Liza is also great in addition to Ross and one of my all time favorites, Tyson. Can you image such a great line up of films today? It just wouldn't happen in a single year!
@miguelucho20008 She said 'Hope they haven't got a cause'........she's referring to Marlon Brando not accepting his Oscar to publicize his pet cause of Native Indian rights (There'll be a clip of his 'declining speech' on here somewhere)
The ideal acceptance speech: short and sweet.
(Amazing how Ms. Welch looks here, I did not recognize her until she opened her mouth to speak)

Raquel is even so fake and wooden when reading a cue card.

Why didn't she thank her mother? Where's her mother's due? I love Liza, don't get me wrong, but that was not expected...
spiderwebs7215 1 year ago 2
@spiderwebs7215 why should she thank her mother ? judy had nothing to do with this ! liza inherited the voice thats true, but cabaret was lizas win - not judys, judy had enough spotlight in 20 years !!!!
oentschi 1 year ago
@spiderwebs7215 because she and her mother never had a good relationship it was always a competition between them judy was jelaous of liza and her voice and liza wanted to breake away from her mother for a long time...

@spiderwebs7215 Judy had died 2 years b4 she won...I think she still should have thanked her though!!

@spiderwebs7215 I think she was so emotional. You could see it in her eyes. One mention of her mother may have been too much for her I guess

There is nothing more I could ask than having her win an oscar for this.

@hebleedsglitter DIANA ROSS's FACE was priceless it made me laugh the hardest
Agustinwonder 1 year ago 3
@hebleedsglitter Some people like to keep their speeches short & sweet. And I am sure her mom knows that she is thankful- Liza didn't blubber on about "I am so lucky...so thankful..." which can get annoying. Short & Sweet was a perfect.

@hebleedsglitter Please do not use that nasty word. Very disrespectful.

a friend of mine was a super Liza fan and we met her at the artists entrance to the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion when she was in concert there in the 70's.

ThatScorpioKid 1 year ago
Such a shame her mother (Judy Garland) wasn't alive to see her daughter winning it. Especially since she (many would argue unjustly) lost it to Grace Kelly in 1955.

liza in Cabaret is iconic....this role is famous in the world...she DESERVED oscar

@lilwelshladee I have seen cabaret and in my opinion sounder and lady sings the blues are beyond excellent, but i understand why others think cabaret was the rightful winner. in the game of award giving someone will lose
