The QM was outdated when designed and built. Normandie was FAR superior - even in looks. Normandie was powered by electric motors, more streamlined. Far faster hull. It was far cheaper to run than QM. QM even looked old fashioned on commission. The Normandie designer approached Cunard with his design but they were still in the 1800s, so built the QM.
White Star started the superior than QM Oceanic. When merging WS & Cunard, it was dropped & QM taken up as she progressed more in construction
She was, and still is, a magnificent ship as was her sister, Queen Elizabeth. I'd prefer to see these ships sailing today rather than the "boxes afloat" they have cruising around.
I was there on the queen mary about 3 monthes ago she is being restored its going to take some time but they are working on her,,,does any know where I can find the full song QUEEN OF THE SEA 1936
She's not in that bad of shape. She does need a paint job on the hull but the funnels received a fresh coat of 'Cunard Red' paint late last year. She was in pretty bad shape when Long Beach purchased her from cash-strapped Cunard in 1967.
She always struck me as a happy ship compared to others. She survived WW2 and is still around, what a survivor. The Normandie Rex,Conte Di Savioa,Bremen,Brittanic and Paris had such sad fates.
I've always found giant ship propellers creepy. When Ive visited the Queen with my Dad and my siblings weve gone into the prop room and asked each other how much money would it take for you to jump in, swim down to the prop and touch it. Some of us say no way! Not even for one thousand dollars.
My worse fear is to be at sea on a ship of that size with it disabled or sinking and have to jump off of the stern into the water at night near the props. Id rather be shot, electrocuted or hung. I wonder if there is a name for this phobia. I think I could walk near the props if the ship was drydocked, but if theyre submerged in water forget it. It amazes me that navy seals have no problem swimming under ships while theyre in port at night. Eeek.
The Titanic and Queen Mary are in a sense, "distant cousins". The Queen Mary was built 24 years after Titanic for the newly merged Cunard-White Star Line (White Star Line owned Titanic) and was considerably larger and faster than Titanic.
There was another neat video somewhere on here, it covered mostly the QM's war service. "Its Been a Long, Long Time" is one of the songs in it, and it has shots of the entire ship covered with people. Has anybody seen it? I can't find it. :(
My Grandpa had a tugboat business. 3 of his tugboats helped dock the Queen Mary in dry dock. I have a picture somewhere, it's so cool! It's a beautiful ship.
I agree with you on that one. The old steamers were untouchable in my book. However I do think the QM2 is a pretty nice ship; not the prettiest thing afloat, but it makes up for it on the inside. I can't wait to take the voyage on her!
Great video!!!! I have always had a great love for old liners and the QM1 is one of most beautiful. I think video like this makes for wonderful reference material when constructing scale models of her hull.
Oh My God, this is the best footage I have ever seen of the MARY's sea going days!!! It's almost as if she was taken with a digital video camera. I never thought I'de see such a treat! Thanks!! And the narrater has a very distinct voice. I rather fance it.
You're friend cannot helped build the ship. Simply she was build in st Nazaire France and not in Hamburg Germany. She only dry docked in Hamburg fore a Small refit and annual overhaul.
Rubbish - Her construction began in December 1930 on the River Clyde by the John Brown & Company Shipbuilding and Engineering shipyard at Clydebank Scotland. She was launched on 26 September 1934.
I think this is the secret of the QM1 was her design and overall looks which were majestic and I'm sure in peoples minds this is how they think ships should or did look like. It is a difficult subject to explain in words!
This is the best ship ever laid. I was married on her ..and went to Europe on the QM2 ..God Save her out of the clutches of of politics...they need to do this cleaning procedure now.
hi skot did u work on the queen mary building wise shes a great beautiful ship isnt she, been on her my self govan born, govan made, bring her home to where she was built,,,, thanks
Well I would say that's a good idea...but she would surely sink if she was taken back to Europe...No I did not work on the Queen while she was built..but I have volunteered many times...to clean and preserve her. Have a good one.
Queen Mary 2 is the only ship resembling such elegance today: Queen Elizabeth 3 and the Queen Victoria look hedious!!!

ships like this were strictly, even almost fanatically maintained in order to maintain a good reputation with travelers.

I'd sooner sail on the Queen Mary 2 rather than some of those 'rusting white hulks' that are so called 'cruise liners'
