Wow. This sounds like an incredibly difficult piece to play. George plays it flawlessly though, of course.
R.I.P., one of the best. If there is an afterlife, I imagine George and Billy Taylor and all the jazz piano greats hang out and jam on grand pianos all day!
When he was gone Dean pointed to the empty piano seat. "God's empty chair," he said. On the piano a horn sat; its golden shadow made a strange reflection along the desert caravan painted on the wall behind the drums. God was gone; it was the silence of his departure. It was a rainy night. It was the myth of the rainy night. Dean was popeyed with awe. RIP George Shearing 13/8/19 - 14/02/11

to answer Beck19781 and others: You ´re probably right, but I think another reason may be the lack of understanding to play an instrument (piano,guitar,sax....) I´m a semi pro musician and quickly got bored to play just C F G Am ....I developed a taste for odd time signatures and alterated chords (Jazz,ProgRock, classical composers). If all people would play an instrument, there would instantly be many more who appreciate Jazz music ! Regards from Hamburg/Germany.
It's all part of the dumbing down process- fools are easily manipulated. George Shearing and his contemporaries are remnants of a time when independent thinking was the praised rather than feared, and when true merit reigned rather than group-think and the "teaming" consensus of protean groups. (I better shut up before they "."vote me off the island.")
tarabos george was well known to folks who understood as for the public they only want simple crap thats why you never see a symphony orchestra on a juke box or tv or radio ahh what a shame
I will NEVER understand, why real true great (etc.) music/musicians is/are/was/were most UNKNOWN in the clumsy mainstram public (?) A friend of mine answered: People just listen to music they are personally deserving!
@Tarabos1, I gave a lesson to a student of the local music university years ago and showed him various ways to solo. I demonstrated the block chord style made famous by George Shearing and the student said ... George who?
This was a university level student. As I get older I have less and less respect for music universities.
@Tarabos1 There are a few reasons; none valid, but worth unearthing in order to understand. I think jazz as a whole is not accepted by the mainstream because for most in the general audience, its missing a personal element. Most people like pop music because they imagine a vocalist to be singing directly to them. As most jazz is instrumental, this phenomenon is absent. Also, we shouldn't discount the perpetual myth that jazz is an elitist artform. Most people still subscribe to this lie.
I love George Shearing.
But I really find it distasteful when people spend all of their time belittling others' musical tastes instead of just enjoying their own good taste.
