Heavy Duty foil wrks just as well. Thnxs for the video been wrkn on 360's for four years and collected 9 360's nothn wrkd now they are gone thnx again
I was planning on fixing an xbox 360 old white model but with HDMI E74 error with the aluminum shim fix. What size thickness do I need as I you mention the thickness for a non hdmi console but not with HDMI. Thanks - I thought you had a video for it but I cant find it. Can you let me know which video that one is? Thanks. Your fixes rocked on old xboxs with the aluminum sheet.
@MentalCenter This repair is extremely bad for your Xbox and should never be preformed!!! And explain why this will kill your Xbox! I also am giving away $250,000.00 and free Xboxes just to teach you the truth! ((DO NOT DO THIS!))
Wanted to say thanks. The shim fix worked perfectly! Also, a small thing I noticed when replacing casing screw: try not to over-tighten as it causes issues with the DVD drive and further problems with the GPU.
I did the xclamp mod with thermal compound, wouldnt even boot. Then did it with arctic silver, same thing. After that I cut 3 pieces of Rynolds HEAVY DUTY aluminum foil to the exact size of the CPU and GPU chips. Held them on with a dab of thermal paste and viola! fixed. I've been using the hell out of it and not so much as a beep or freeze. you have to be sure the foil is perfectly smoothed out and the EXACT dimensions as the chips. Clean the heatsinks spotless or lap them even
If I found out someone put screws in my xbox and or used a heatgun to fix it. Id deff make them by me a brand new fucking xbox. If you want to have a candidate for a reball... plzz use a heat gun and screws
I got my 360 to work without needing shims (I bought shims for my ps3 because the heatsink wont make contact with the GPU!)
For my 360, I threw away the x-clamps (pieces of sh!t) and used the correct size bolts (cant remember the size or thread count but I believe 10-15mm length works) with 2 washers (one nylon touching the board, the other metal) on each bolt to clamp the heatsink down, and I increased 1 fan to 12v, left the other at 5v, and it's been working for months!

THIS WORKS! I've repaired my unit with the bolts, nuts, washers and heat sink compound at least 10 times, even tried the pennies wrapped in electrical tape. and each time the red ring would come back. After going through 3 tubes of different types of heat sink compound I cut a piece of aluminum with tin snips and applied Radio Shack's Arctic Silver and it has been working for about a month with heavy use. THANK YOU!
hey man i'm on my friends accout right now but i've encountered the rrod and i sent it to my buddy who fixed it... well he is upgrading it better fans and cooling units also he is adding in dual side fans for more cooling but i put a small processor fan on the front of the cooling block itself and wired it into the back fans.... and when i put it back together it rrod-ed on me again... i've messed with it and messed with it and have been met with no success my email is krisophoros@gmail.com
@missled2u It RROD because he didn't fix it properly. Watch my videos and you'll see me explain the gpu heatsink must be replaced. Putting fans on it will not solve the problem. You will first have to reflow the board with the gpu side and then attach a new gpu heatsink.
thanks for the video buddy but i got a question . I bought off a friend a broken xbox and i removed the clamps and installed the screws. When i turned it on it worked for a hour or 2. When i started gaming the video chip was going out. So when i pulled out the board i tighten it a little more and i let it heat up a bit. Now when i tried to restart it i get 3 rings and my fan accelerates really high for a few seconds then it stops completly also it doesnt show anything on my tv .

Thanks so much, I was able to fix my brother's and my friends' xboxes after they red ringed using this method. I did the screw fix first and it didn't work but after using the shim and letting the xbox run for a few minutes while covered in my jacket, they turned on and have been doing good so far.
@pgonzz Did you make sure after you shimed it to let your xbox overheat untill you get 2 red rings so that way the GPU will reflow. I had the no video problem and thats what I had to do to fix it. Just make sure you put the xbox fans on top of the CPU so it dosen't overheat. Also make sure your screws arent too lose or too tight.
hey how are you gamer guy51 what if you do not have a aluminum shim or plate and not the money to get one and also no x clamps i drummled the ridges down and i got the washers and screws and the drill basicaly i have ecrything except the two items the clamps and the aluminum plate is there any other alternative
I've fixed many RRODs before and just recently I fixed a 0020 error code now 3 months later I get another xbox 360 off eBay with 0020 planning on fixing it. I've done the hybrid fix homemade and advanced, reflow, old xclamp fix everything and i still can't get it to boot up. I even tried this fix you showed us here. What else could i do fix it? and it's a NON-hdmi system If that matters which I hear it does. Thanks in advance.
how about a no power prob bro..it turns on when it wants to..do the chips have any thing to do with it..some sed the brick..so i tryed a new one same crap..or do i go and buy a new one..any help..
GamerGuy51 Thanks for this video, I had a HDMI Xbox with 0021 RROD and I tried x-clamps and every fix I could find,
I saw the GPU was not making good contact with the heatsink no matter how the tight the screws were.
I got a piece of aluminum @ Lowes and followed the instructions your other video. It worked like a charm but then gave 0031, I loosened a tiny bit on each one and it booted up for 4 hrs I played.
I think your shim fix might have resurrected this pain in the ass HDMI Xbox!
i didn not put the aluminum in the GPU but did everything else, and still have the rrod should I go back and put it on there? plus my fan starts to run when I turn it on but stops right after. plus nothing comes up on my tv screen when I turn it on am I doing something wrong?
There is something that I've seen in lots of vids like this.. after they do all of this(after all the repair).. before putting back the xbox together.. they unplug the fan and turn on the console.. they let it on until the three red lights become 2(Basically you want it to overheat, it sounds crzy but it works you can check it in other vids) after the 3 lights become 2 you turn it off and let it rest for 20 minutes.. then you can plug the fan again and put all the carcase together
GG51 I have an Elite HDMI never had RROD just no Vid/Aud Did the X clamp pennie fix Works a couple hours a day gets a weird shadow blue outlining the background shuts down to no vid/aud again. I use arctic silver5, clean GPU/CPU draw the heat away with fan for 40 mins so the correct processor gets hot enough, plug back ingood to go for 5hrs What do you think? thx
@pudLjumpr1 Done this at least 5 times with the same result. Local guy wants to take it on as a project as he has only seen this twice me bein the 2nd. Shim repair maybe?
I did your aluminum method on an HD 3 ring of death light 360. now it gives me 2 rings instantly and wont get off of it, wait 20 min, same thing. any advice?
hi so do i take the rubber eraser off the four chips on the back of the motherboard because i dont have the thermal pads on the four chips so i put eraser another cuestion what if i tried the shim fix and it doesnt work what do i do and how do i know my xbox 360 cant be repared because ive tried varios fixes answer back fast please
question i have rebber eraser on the back of the motherbord a piece on each of the four chips does this hepl and should i leave them on or take them off thanks how can i email you
Hey. The only size i can get is 0.5mm 0.6mm and 1mm. I got the 1mm but now i wonder if its too thick?? We dont have hardware stores like yours. Its not easy to get! Thanks
Thanks GamerGuy!! I have tried many other fixes and they work temporarily. I am going to try your method as it seems to work for most. I found a .040 sheet, is this ok to use? Also, is the exact dimensions 1 1/8 x 5/8? I have a elite from 12-2007, i know you say not all fixes are 100% and you have probs with hdmi's wut do you think my odds are? How have they been for you with these systems? Thx for all your help.
.040 might be a little thick...don't tighten the screws all the way, make them snug and then tighten as needed after testing. the size is right and it should work for you xbox. later!
It worked perfect!! GamerGuy I understand the logic behind it but I would have never thought it would work so flawlesly!! After all, there is a heatsink already there which is flat as well as the aluminum shim, but regardless it worked. I did everything just like you did on your vid and it all worked perfect. So far 3 days strong. I know 3 days is nothing but they were strenous days today being the worst as it has been on non stop since 12:30pmEST. Thanks again for all your help!
thanks man and another cuestion could i use a piece of aluminum can as the sheet or do i need the actual aluminum shim and if i can use the piece of aluminum can does it matter if its thin or does it ahve to be the size you say thanks answer back
thanks another cuestion do i cut the aluminum sheet so it coversthe gpu and the little chip at the bottom .and could you tell me what the size of the screws in milameters because i ask for 10mm x .8 x 5 mm and they dont understand me thanks. one more cuestion could you tell me where i would put each washer do i put two on each screw on the gpu and cpu thanks sorry about asking so much cuestions its just that i want the fix to work cuz i really want to play my 360 so thnaks and answer back
right 10mm isthe length, .8 is the thread and 5 is the diameter. also the shim is 1inch x 1.5 inch and eight bigger on each cut is good. two washers per screw on top of the board under the heatsink
ok thanks and the size of the screws are 10mm *.8*5mm and so its two screws under the heat sink no screws on the other side of the motherboard where you tighten it
thanks for answering and is the aluminum shim repair the same as the washer fix or which one is the washer fix and on the shim fix you say put two washers on the screws but where do i put the washers two under the heat sinks or one under the heatsink and on under the scres head.............................. and all the washers you used are metal you dont use nylon or rubber washers? and do i put the aluminum shim ontop of the cpu and gpu thanks answer back
hi man how can i email you and one cuestion how do you know if your xbox has no repair cuz ive tried puting thermal paste them leting it heat and stuff but i still have the red lights
hi amn thanks for answering another cuetion is the ultimate hybrid fix 100 chance that it will fix the three red lights and when i turn on my xbox it has two red lights on the rights side and one on the bottom left side and the xbox is laid down not up so ive looked at other three red lights and they have two red lights on the left side and one on thebottom right side so my cuestion es why are my lights different so plase answer back thanks
Thanks alot Gamerguy, I fixed my HDMI like 5 times before, and since I used the shim, its been goin ever since. Fixed one of my friends older models too, still goin strong.
yeah gamerguy51 just wondered do i need to buy the cpu and heatsink cleaner to clean the old thermal paste of the components before i add the new thermal compound (paste)
Thank you so much! this works for me i used aluminum for kitchen use folded it two times with some coolpaste between and that worked! :) so thnx for the video! :)
need to know if you put the alum over the gpu with thermal paste or just the alum. do u do it for the cpu as well? where is the other video of yours that shows u how to do it?
You could get a rubber hammer to flatten out the BOTTOM of a pop can and then cut the flat piece to fit. It would have to be super FLAT...I would think.
Hey GamerGuy! I need help! Ive tried the aluminum repair on my HDMI 360 to get rid of that e74 error, and it worked...for a week. Do you need to overheat the xbox to make the thermal paste set?
yeah, you need to take everything back apart and clean the processors off again and use a heatgun on the scaler chip area. google xbox experts and check out their website. later

SuperTurdsandwich 2 years ago
Hey. The only size i can get is 0.5mm 0.6mm and 1mm. I got the 1mm but now i wonder if its too thick?? We dont have hardware stores like yours. Its not easy to get! Thanks
Dazzla20 2 years ago

Thanks GamerGuy!! I have tried many other fixes and they work temporarily. I am going to try your method as it seems to work for most. I found a .040 sheet, is this ok to use? Also, is the exact dimensions 1 1/8 x 5/8? I have a elite from 12-2007, i know you say not all fixes are 100% and you have probs with hdmi's wut do you think my odds are? How have they been for you with these systems? Thx for all your help.
knm017 2 years ago
.040 might be a little thick...don't tighten the screws all the way, make them snug and then tighten as needed after testing. the size is right and it should work for you xbox. later!
GamerGuy51 2 years ago
It worked perfect!! GamerGuy I understand the logic behind it but I would have never thought it would work so flawlesly!! After all, there is a heatsink already there which is flat as well as the aluminum shim, but regardless it worked. I did everything just like you did on your vid and it all worked perfect. So far 3 days strong. I know 3 days is nothing but they were strenous days today being the worst as it has been on non stop since 12:30pmEST. Thanks again for all your help!

thanks man and another cuestion could i use a piece of aluminum can as the sheet or do i need the actual aluminum shim and if i can use the piece of aluminum can does it matter if its thin or does it ahve to be the size you say thanks answer back
SuperTurdsandwich 2 years ago
thanks another cuestion do i cut the aluminum sheet so it coversthe gpu and the little chip at the bottom .and could you tell me what the size of the screws in milameters because i ask for 10mm x .8 x 5 mm and they dont understand me thanks. one more cuestion could you tell me where i would put each washer do i put two on each screw on the gpu and cpu thanks sorry about asking so much cuestions its just that i want the fix to work cuz i really want to play my 360 so thnaks and answer back
SuperTurdsandwich 2 years ago
right 10mm isthe length, .8 is the thread and 5 is the diameter. also the shim is 1inch x 1.5 inch and eight bigger on each cut is good. two washers per screw on top of the board under the heatsink
GamerGuy51 2 years ago
hi could you tell me how thick the aluminum sheet is in milameters thanks and could you answer the other cuestiones please
SuperTurdsandwich 2 years ago
a little less than 1mm
GamerGuy51 2 years ago
and do you recomend puting arcitic silver 5 on the little chips beside the cpu and gpu or just put thermal paste the the main chips
SuperTurdsandwich 2 years ago
can i use #8washers
SuperTurdsandwich 2 years ago
ok thanks and the size of the screws are 10mm *.8*5mm and so its two screws under the heat sink no screws on the other side of the motherboard where you tighten it
SuperTurdsandwich 2 years ago
thanks for answering and is the aluminum shim repair the same as the washer fix or which one is the washer fix and on the shim fix you say put two washers on the screws but where do i put the washers two under the heat sinks or one under the heatsink and on under the scres head.............................. and all the washers you used are metal you dont use nylon or rubber washers? and do i put the aluminum shim ontop of the cpu and gpu thanks answer back
SuperTurdsandwich 2 years ago
@SuperTurdsandwich shim is only on gpu. metal washers only. yes two washers per screw between the motherboard and heatsink.
GamerGuy51 2 years ago

could u use aluminum from a pop can
phillycheese77 2 years ago
You could get a rubber hammer to flatten out the BOTTOM of a pop can and then cut the flat piece to fit. It would have to be super FLAT...I would think.

GamerGuy,
so can I fix my HDMI xbox 360 that has the error 74 with the Aluminum Shim?
playingmax 2 years ago
no bro your screwed sorry :( but if it still has the warranty sticker, ms just extended the warranty out for e74 to three years....
GamerGuy51 2 years ago
Hey GamerGuy! I need help! Ive tried the aluminum repair on my HDMI 360 to get rid of that e74 error, and it worked...for a week. Do you need to overheat the xbox to make the thermal paste set?
If yes how long for?
Please reply and thanks for the good guide!
B4SSMASTA 2 years ago
yeah, you need to take everything back apart and clean the processors off again and use a heatgun on the scaler chip area. google xbox experts and check out their website. later
GamerGuy51 2 years ago
