@602780573 When you are permanently at the same speed, the hybrid system is not used, (not torque needed) and the V8 is more than enough to keep the speed. If you are comparing a BMW 740 (a mediocre car) to the LEXUS, in Europe, it is just because you couldn't pay the LEXUS (which is more expensive). And please, I suggest you to talk about the problems with the BMW 740 is you have that car since two years ago.
@DtorBillAgain But in a reality when you speeding on autobahn you are all the time braking and acceleration and it makes hybrid system overheated. So if you are interested in crusing speed over 200kph (120mph) BMW is simply a better choice. BMW si more stable and direct in feedback through streering wheel.
@DtorBillAgain: I had two 7 series BMW - same generation. First one was 730d (3.0 I6 diesel) and then I upgraded to 305hp V8 740i (not available on US market) 730d never broke down. Only steering pump has been replaced due to noisy operation when wheels turned fully. 740i switched to a safe mode and later stopped on autobahn due to engine problem. Service shop towed the car and then investigated error as engine stopped due to overheated catalyst converters (self protection) I was in hurry :)

Yes Lexus looks at first moment much better, but after two days I realized shiny things are not always better and as the car BMW is better designed. Lexus is more about show then go. Everything is flashing, beeping, many LCDs, much better looking interior and better gearbox. BMW is just better car. Also I was insane about Lexus central contol LCD.
@602780573 Accept it or not, there is not comparisson between a mediocre BMW 740 and a Lexus LS600h; believe or not there is NOT comparisson between both cars and if you don't have the car is just because of the difference of prices; excuses like 'overheated' make no sense, and now about the LCDs? They are informative and comfortable and I also have tried both cars, and even the 760i (previos version) (only in Germany and Canary Islands) can't be compared to the LS600h.

Secondary why not - overheating of hybrid system when speeding and insane central control touch screen LCD blocking my imputs like mobil phone or Sat/Nav functions when car is in move. 7er is a direct competitor to Lexus LS. And price of 740i was $129.000

About the rest, repeating, the car is perfectly designed even for Italian roads and its suspension is simply perfect for bad roads. 740i is also noise

So if Lexus blocking mobile phone and Sat/Nav functions when cruising 50kph it makes me really crazy. But it is just cosmetics. Two days when I had Lexus at home I switched from BMW to Lexus couple times per day. BMW is better car, that s it. Lexus is just moving house with all equipment on board. Of course the brand new 7series is another step forward.

I had this Lexus just for 2 days from local dealer to test their brand new car (at that time first delivered piece to my country) When I realized suspension is bad and some features (or options) can't be ordered, when I overheated hybrid system just after 25 minutes on highway (autobahn) I decided to buy BMW 740i
This car is amazing....look how the rpm just stays at 6400. Even with your foot down the car is still so smooth....MOST cars would be screaming and sounding like their on their last.....this on the other hand sound like its not working hard at all. Awesome Lexus.

The Lexus is not very well designed for high speed and also suspension is not able to absorb bad roads as german competitors. If I can choose LS600h or 760i I vote for BMW 760i
602780573, I have owned a 600hL for two years now. The CVT you talk about here is in fact a ECVT. The E stands for Electronic. The transmission indeed has gears, lots of them, and they are planetary gears. The shifting is done electronically. A computer controls the shifts making them appear seamless. So it is different than a true CVT, like the ones used on other cars like Nissan. The same applies with all Toyota/Lexus hybrid cars.

yep in manual " + " " - " mode the ECVT gearbox feels like other regular 8 speed automatic transmissions. But in reality a fully automatic mode is far best way how to get best possible performance. If you just simply hit the gas pedal car starts acceleration immediately and without any delay because there is no kickdown you have full power really almost immediately. Its a neck crusher car :D
Actually the 'excessive alarm' and castigation made by the news media (etc) on Toyota's gas pedal reflect the degree of very high reliability reputation which was somehow compromised (which might not have occurred as much if the vehicles were German etc). The LS600hL is a bigger model than the LS460L. and is also slightly more fuel efficient. Actually, it ought to have been significantly more fuel efficient than its non hybrid versions but for some strange reason(s), it ain't.
Not quite a failure for Lexus. It is overloaded with technical gadgetry especially the LS600hL, which tend to eat up its fuel efficiency despite its hybrid engine. Even then it's still a technical feat for this vehicle to still compete with a V-6 engine & of course significantly more fuel efficient than its German rivals (in its upper most class). Technicality & reliability, it still beats its German rivals hands down overall. Show me other cars with as much gadgets & as fuel efficient.
I hear yeah. The big mistake Lexus did with this car was ti use a CVT; great the Prius but on a car this big and powerful, a traditional transmistion would have made this V8 sound much better.

Very powerful!. It's quite interesting. The engine stays at 6400rmp while the speed keep going up from 200 to 260 km/h. This is a brand new LS600hL, only 1000km on it. If it's mine, I won't push it to the limit!

problem for your comparsion is... ...the Lexus is not designed for fastest acceleration from 0 to 100kmh because it is not important for this kind of car. LS600 is designed to provide a maximum acceleration between 80-180 kmh. And LS600 has better acceleration than 8sec it is about 6 and half.

@602780573 Accept it or not, there is not comparisson between a mediocre BMW 740 and a Lexus LS600h; believe or not there is NOT comparisson between both cars and if you don't have the car is just because of the difference of prices; excuses like 'overheated' make no sense, and now about the LCDs? They are informative and comfortable and I also have tried both cars, and even the 760i (previos version) (only in Germany and Canary Islands) can't be compared to the LS600h.

Main reasons why not Lexus were: ride comfort (very badly tuned air suspension), handling, fuel tank capacity and no possibility to order the car with factory installed independent winter heating system (auxilary heating). Secondary why not - overheating of hybrid system when speeding and insane central control touch screen LCD blocking my imputs like mobil phone or Sat/Nav functions when car is in move. 7er is a direct competitor to Lexus LS. And price of 740i was $129.000

@602780573 First of all, if you paid that for a 740i it was an overoveroverpriced car and you know that. In addition, I suggest you to check the prices of both cars in Europe. Second: Again, the hybrid system works PERFECTLY after that 'overhearting situation' because there IS NOT reason to be activated after getting high speed (the V8 is enough). About the rest, repeating, the car is perfectly designed even for Italian roads and its suspension is simply perfect for bad roads. 740i is also noise

@DtorBillAgain. Look as a holder of licence allows me fly a commercial jetliner I know when and what to use in right time. So if Lexus blocking mobile phone and Sat/Nav functions when cruising 50kph it makes me really crazy. But it is just cosmetics. Two days when I had Lexus at home I switched from BMW to Lexus couple times per day. BMW is better car, that s it. Lexus is just moving house with all equipment on board. Of course the brand new 7series is another step forward.

@602780573 I like your way... again, comparing two incomparable cars; BMW is not bad but there is a huge difference between both cars, especially in terms or quality and reliability. Unfortunately BMW is just a not bad luxury car, noise (especially the cabin) and a 740i isn't even comparable to a LEXUS GS, which is a smaller segment; try to admit the things instead of inventing your own histories without any proper reason.

@602780573 Unlike BMW, Lexus cares about security, even taking into account the better position of LCD and panels. I also suggest you to check the new LS600h. And if you don't have any problem with your BMW it's just because you don't have the car or you don't use it... simple as that.

@602780573 If you are realistic, you could even see the comparisson between Mercedes, Lexus and BMW, they are unable to make a fair comparisson... why? Obviously because of the same reason as you. The LS is simply a better car than a mediocre BMW (and about reliability even more)... Didn't you know? Europe is going to prohibite the use of 'free hands', so, lets think why several option are disable when the car is 'speeding'. It seems, again, you have a prejudice instead of an objective opinion.

@602780573 And sorry if it seems 'impolite', but if you knew the "competitor" why buying that car (LS600h) <-- Which is not cheap at all; I don't think you really care about the difference of prices, especially if we take those prices into consideration (any european and Lexus, if there was a considerable difference). I'm not sure, but I believe you don't even know what you are talking about, especially comparing cars.

@DtorBillAgain. I exactly know what I am talking about. The Lexus LS600hL si awesome car, but is not very well designed for european style of driving and for european type of roads. I had this Lexus just for 2 days from local dealer to test their brand new car (at that time first delivered piece to my country) When I realized suspension is bad and some features (or options) can't be ordered, when I overheated hybrid system just after 25 minutes on highway (autobahn) I decided to buy BMW 740i

This car is amazing....look how the rpm just stays at 6400. Even with your foot down the car is still so smooth....MOST cars would be screaming and sounding like their on their last.....this on the other hand sound like its not working hard at all. Awesome Lexus.

@darkdawn01 if you living in the USA it should be a good decision buy this car. If you living in EU is better to buy BMW od Merc. The Lexus is not very well designed for high speed and also suspension is not able to absorb bad roads as german competitors. If I can choose LS600h or 760i I vote for BMW 760i

602780573, I have owned a 600hL for two years now. The CVT you talk about here is in fact a ECVT. The E stands for Electronic. The transmission indeed has gears, lots of them, and they are planetary gears. The shifting is done electronically. A computer controls the shifts making them appear seamless. So it is different than a true CVT, like the ones used on other cars like Nissan. The same applies with all Toyota/Lexus hybrid cars.

yep in manual " + " " - " mode the ECVT gearbox feels like other regular 8 speed automatic transmissions. But in reality a fully automatic mode is far best way how to get best possible performance. If you just simply hit the gas pedal car starts acceleration immediately and without any delay because there is no kickdown you have full power really almost immediately. Its a neck crusher car :D

Actually the 'excessive alarm' and castigation made by the news media (etc) on Toyota's gas pedal reflect the degree of very high reliability reputation which was somehow compromised (which might not have occurred as much if the vehicles were German etc). The LS600hL is a bigger model than the LS460L. and is also slightly more fuel efficient. Actually, it ought to have been significantly more fuel efficient than its non hybrid versions but for some strange reason(s), it ain't.

Not quite a failure for Lexus. It is overloaded with technical gadgetry especially the LS600hL, which tend to eat up its fuel efficiency despite its hybrid engine. Even then it's still a technical feat for this vehicle to still compete with a V-6 engine & of course significantly more fuel efficient than its German rivals (in its upper most class). Technicality & reliability, it still beats its German rivals hands down overall. Show me other cars with as much gadgets & as fuel efficient.

I hear yeah. The big mistake Lexus did with this car was ti use a CVT; great the Prius but on a car this big and powerful, a traditional transmistion would have made this V8 sound much better.

Very powerful!. It's quite interesting. The engine stays at 6400rmp while the speed keep going up from 200 to 260 km/h. This is a brand new LS600hL, only 1000km on it. If it's mine, I won't push it to the limit!

0-100 kmh in about 8 second is fast now? sad, how a 6.0 lexus engine only gets that.
the BMW 750Li with a 4.4i engine get to 100 in 5.1 seconds.
smaller engine,with a faster acceleration, thats why BMW is better

problem for your comparsion is... ...the Lexus is not designed for fastest acceleration from 0 to 100kmh because it is not important for this kind of car. LS600 is designed to provide a maximum acceleration between 80-180 kmh. And LS600 has better acceleration than 8sec it is about 6 and half.
