i'm a senior in high school and i came across lucille clifton the beginning of this year. i'm going to college as a literature major, and i love her so much that i asked my mother (who's an artist) to draw a painting so that i can hang it in my dorm room. i TOTALLY agree with you in reference to the maya angelou case. as much as i love "still i rise" and admire her life, clifton's poetry is so much more rich and layered.
that's some real good stuff right there, gotta love lucille clifton. Maybe you like her more than maya, cause maya's stuff may be a bit too glossy and artificial while lucille's stuff's 'alive and breathing'? I don't know, just a penny for a thought ;) btw, is it strange that I'd like that poem as much as a guy? :D
..to see you love poetry so makes my heart burst. I, too, adore the incomparable Lucille Clifton: 'hag', and 'to my last period' come to mind. Your dream is about you...to be a poet, to be an artist, is to be willing to look at all the dark, unsettling, smelly stuff in your life, as we all must, those called to this life. Keep writing, and reading. The poems here are lovely, as you are. xo
Love your reading style & attitude. Love the poems & THEIR attitude! On the subject of 'hips' and sensual/emotional appreciation of true femininity, you might tell me what you think of "Lay your hands on me" by Roy Gotaas (me) on Youtube? I'd appreciate your feedback.
Thank you, thank you for sharing that! I can't believe I had never heard of her before watching your video. "Homage to my hips" filled my eyes with tears and made me laugh out loud at the same time. If you saw my hips, you would understand, LOL. I also love your passion while reading the poems. I regrettably have never been able to write poetry tho I do appreciate it. I immediately subscribed to your channel and sent you a friend request. I hope thats ok! Thanks again....
I had never heard of lucille clifton, and I laughed, and I got big tears in my eyes. And a big old smile. Thanks for reading them. You introduced me to someone who has a voice I want more of... And your smile is so honest, it gave me hope for people out there in this vast space of internet. :) Thank you!
Bravo! Thanks so much for reading these poems and sharing your love of Lucille Clifton with everyone! I keyworded her name on youtube, hoping to find just such a reading as yours. I recognize the wonder and glee you shine when talking about her--I share it too. I've been diving in and out of "Blessing The Boats" for years. Her poems just stick in my brain and won't let me go. As soon as I get a video camera I will read some of my favorites onto youtube as well.

That was a perfect dream as to what one must do to be a poet. I think. And I agree.,,Clifton leaves Angelou in the dust.
