i'm a senior in high school and i came across lucille clifton the beginning of this year. i'm going to college as a literature major, and i love her so much that i asked my mother (who's an artist) to draw a painting so that i can hang it in my dorm room. i TOTALLY agree with you in reference to the maya angelou case. as much as i love "still i rise" and admire her life, clifton's poetry is so much more rich and layered.

Maybe you like her more than maya, cause maya's stuff may be a bit too glossy and artificial while lucille's stuff's 'alive and breathing'? I don't know, just a penny for a thought ;) btw, is it strange that I'd like that poem as much as a guy? :D

Your dream is about you...to be a poet, to be an artist, is to be willing to look at all the dark, unsettling, smelly stuff in your life, as we all must, those called to this life. I had never heard of lucille clifton, and I laughed, and I got big tears in my eyes. And a big old smile. Thanks for reading them. You introduced me to someone who has a voice I want more of...
