Great movies and nice horses. I am interested in a carriage like the one used in this movie. Can anyone help me with some advice about who build them? Thank you.
I searched "Hackney Pony" because I wanted to see what a TRUE hackney was. I bred Miniature Pinschers (dog) and it says in our standard True hackney action, like that of a hackney pony. My dogs hackney, but are not as high stepping as a hackney horse. If I ever bred a dog that had movement like a true hackney pony. I would be in heaven. Thank you so much for posting this video. It did not only help and amaze horse people, but a person in the dog world as well. Much Love. <3
Expert's may not agree, but better medical technology is coming out, and right now, all the extreme head angles they are putting on horses is looking like more and more like damage to the horses everyday.
@akitaakita2 yeah you probably would say that about marines that stand straight and have great posture. You would probably call that abuse too. You probably walk around humped over. That's why so many people have back problems.
@treeslayergotwood No the horse's neck is being craned up. That's not a natural headset for a horse to have. It causes neck, back, and windpipe damage. A horse is not like a human.
You must not know your breeds really well, this head set is pretty natural to the breed. I've seen these and american saddlebreds at play arching their neck and picking up their feet without ever having been trained to do so.
@JumperHunterLover Look closely. There are no devices forcing these ponies' heads up. Last time I checked such things are banned in England. I also don't see the ridiculous thick shoes extending behind the hoof as is common in certain American breeds to emphasise the gaits. Not all hackneys have this exaggerated a gait, some almost look normal but they all hold their heads high and some do naturally pick up like this, like you are seeing.
Amazing video! Really protrays these horses and the sport well. I love the song choice, it really got me thinking about the history too. These horses are just so beautiful. Thank you for the vid!
these horses are held together really well they were bred to high ste and tuck there head in like that so its not really horse cruelty at all they were just bred that way back then because that was the whole "in" thing and it looks pretty and all horses i have seen have hard mouths from people pulling on them and balancing on there mouths make there mouths hard and not as sensitive so they foam from the mouth
The amount of armchair experts on youtube just continues to amaze me. Seriously, have you ever driven a hackney? Seen a hackney in the flesh, being driven? Or are you just making an uninformed statement? I've worked with horses for two decades, and I can tell you that the foam on these horses is mainly a product of them working so hard at what they love to do, they forget to clean up their mess!
There's another sort of foam that DOES indicate stress. If you see a horse with a mouth that is DRIPPING with foam, not just "lipstick" but huge quantities of drool, with foam then there IS a problem. This copious frothing doesn't indicate calm and comfort; it's caused by the horse's head and neck being tightly held in an arched position that puts constant pressure on the horse's parotid glands.
well first of all, head height is different from breed to breed. these horses & others are bred for a very high, tucked head. (not THIS much i'll give you, but it's not a far leap; this is just a refinement of what comes natural to them, as is the high action.) my neighbor's horse holds his head very high and tucked naturally all the time, just out in his field. as for the foaming mouth, it's actually a good sign, as any dressage person will tell you. It means they are relaxed & working the bit.
bullshit. i know the difference between a littlefoam from food and a horse that is foaming because the damn bit is causing it! i love these horses, but in every video or show you watch, every horse is foaming. it's the same with sport horses! funny how you dont see bit abuse in western. hhmmm, wonder why?
Easy (& rather obvious) answer: because you don't use the bits or reigns the same way at all in Western as in English! There is not continual contact in Western. Foaming at the mouth does not indicate big abuse. It is a good sign that the horse is relaxed & working with the bit, as they're supposed to. (There are even bits especially formed to encourage increased salivation.) So you can't just see foam and assume bit abuse. Rather it is a sign of hard work, which many horses thoroughly enjoy.

they are beautiful, BUT, look at the BIT ABUSE!!!!! all the horse are foaming at the mouth so bad! it makes me cry to see how much bit abuse goes on these so called "high class" events. no respect for the animal!
Thank you for your comment, my camera is a sony handycam HC5 and I slowed them down through imovie software on my Macbook Pro also the Hackney horses are beautiful horses to video whatever camera you chose to use!
I love Hackneys...theyre not really kids ponies cause of their fast, high steps...but theyre beautiful.

I completely agree with you except the "all horses have hard mouths which makes them foam" part. :)

food does not cause that much white foam. sad really. horses are not meant to hold their heads so tight.

small amounts of foam indicates that the horse's mouth is wet and that he is able to create a small amount of foam by mouthing his bit softly.

you are pathetic and apparently don't know much about horses....
